Apparently we need a tunnel. Just like we needed the £53 million failed Garden Bridge.

Nice little earner for anyone involved.

Wtf. I cba to unravel this nonsense.

I shouldn’t have engaged.

My blue passport says : ignore the squirrels

LostToucan · 02/03/2021 21:58

But what you're saying now, is that if Kamala Harris becomes US President one day she would only facilitate comprehensive immigration into the US for UK citizens as part of a trade deal that benefits her own country as well.

The US currently facilitates immigration for UK citizens that is a proven benefit to the US.

What’s your point?

LostToucan · 02/03/2021 22:00

But then you’d probably know that if you’ve ever had to jump through all the hoops to apply for a work visa.

(I’m guessing you haven’t).

LostToucan

Read the thread.

LostToucan · 02/03/2021 22:08

I have.

You’re still talking bollocks Confused

Sostenueto · 02/03/2021 22:14

Well think my time is done on MN tbh. Every thread I have visited people just are not nice anymore. Maybe it's because of a year in lockdown and so much misery loss and worry. Or maybe it's keyboard warriors sitting in front of screens enjoying insulting complete strangers but whatever it is im considering leaving MN and maybe social media altogether!

prettybird · 02/03/2021 22:34

Sostenueto - I'd be sad if you left as I appreciate your perspective. Thanks

I find this thread a much more pleasant place - and more constructively informative - if you scroll by certain posters Wink It certainly saves time too Grin

Peregrina · 03/03/2021 00:41

You called me a racist....

Except that no one has. It's been pointed out that Racists were very unlikely to have been Remain voters.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 01:47

All through the weekend, LBC were running government export advertisements for small businesses: export to Tokyo, Mexico City, Toronto ... Japan, Mexico and Canada are members of CPTPP of course - the free trade pact we have applied to join.

Bless their desperate little hearts.

Export exactly what to Tokyo, Mexico City, and Canada?
Oysters?

Transport how and at what cost?

Distribute how?

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 01:49

...the campaign to break up Britain.

Now there's bot-speak if ever I saw it.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 03:13

@buckerrucker

Nationalism in Scotland really isn't very different from nationalism / Brexitism in England. It's about emotion, and not being prepared to look at the cold hard facts of the enormous problems that independence would bring. And the politicians are as dishonest and manipulative as they are in London. Or not far off.

All that and more was leveled at Irish independence campaigners a hundred years ago, and while Ireland definitely had more than mere teething problems, who would have predicted the scale of the turnaround?

Scottish nationalism, like Irish nationalism, is a far cry from English nationalism. English nationalism is arrogant triumphalism which hearkens back to an imaginary past. Scottish desire for independence (as with Irish) is based on long observation and experience of the effects of being peripheral to England, and it is forward looking.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 03:25

The argument they ran last time round (before I moved here) was very poorly supported from a financial perspective. This time round, the benefit of Scottish oil has gone, there's the Covid disaster to clear up - with such a big bill to pay, and the loss of so many jobs - there's the continuing problems of Brexit and there's the huge problem of bordering a non-EU country which is likely to be hostile. Apparently the non-partisan prediction (I think this was pre-Covid though) is that from an economic point of view independence would be 3 times worse than Brexit.
@buckerrucker
Heard all of that before...

It's not as if the government of a future independent Scotland wouldn't have access to expert advice, not to mention lessons from history, etc.

I sincerely hope Scotland won't choke.

Q Wonder how more visas for Indians will go down?

Clavinova Fine I imagine - all the British Indians I know live in big houses and pay for private schooling.

So how come Theresa May was so dead set against more visas for Indians that she scuppered trade talks with India over that issue?

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 03:37

I don't think long term projects are usually abandoned 8 weeks into a new trading relationship

@Clavinova
Long term projects are usually abandoned 8 weeks into a trading relationship when they were dreamed up five weeks into a trading relationship.

See also recent ads on LBC urging businesses to switch from their established EU customers to markets as distinct and as far fling as Toronto, Tokyo and Mexico City for evidence of clutching at straws (and possibly the effects of hallucinogens).

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 03:44

@Clavinova
I probably know the subset who would be granted visas in a trade deal: doctors, dentists, engineers, lawyers, business entrepreneurs and computer programmers.

Nope, Theresa May didn't want that sort of Indian immigrant at all. (Though there is always the possibility that some future British PM will have to eat humble pie and return cap in hand to Hyderabad House).

She responded with a big, fat No to appeals from India on student visas, graduate visas, visas for IT workers, and requests for better treatment for professionals after graduating from UK universities.

Again...

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 03:49

Hopefully Rishi Sunak will be our next PM,

Who would have thought that little old Ireland would beat both the US and the UK in the category 'Political leaders of Indian descent'?

mathanxiety · 03/03/2021 04:02

According to TMZ, Jill is overseeing extensive renovations of the East Wing of the White House; the two-storey area that contains the office space for the First Lady and her staff. The publication cites federal procurement documents indicating that just over $1.2 million will be spent on bathrooms alone, in what’s listed as an ‘EW restroom refresh’.

If the decor of the Trump penthouse in NYC - modeled after the Palace of Versailles - is anything to go by, most of that will be spent scraping gold paint off the lavs.

'Town and Country' mag refers tongue and cheek(ily) to Trump's distinctive style.

@Clavinova
What you're suggesting is that Kamala Harris is Indian/Jamaican first and American second.

Disappointing isn't the word.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 03/03/2021 08:20

What you're suggesting is that Kamala Harris is Indian/Jamaican first and American second.

Wasnt that the same bullshit they used on Obama?

Its lockdown.

People are frustrated and pitted against each other and have lost social skills.

I personally haven't got as much patience with the bullshit and people trying to avoid things that they dont like to hear.

Its accelerated echo chamber problems.

I think once people mix again it will deintensify.

Hang in there or take a social media break.

sOS - I agree with everything Red points out.... but also its desperation caused by the looming catastrophic economic effects of Brexit and Covid. I have friends who are hanging in financially by the skin of their teeth..... and they don't see how it's going to get better any time soon.....

I sincerely hope Rishi is not our next PM - not because of his race - but because he's just another Johnson - even more so ....when it comes to creating wealth for a few and screwing over the rest of the population..... after all it worked for his in-laws....

Peregrina · 03/03/2021 09:44

I would be a bit surprised if Sunak became the next PM, simply because of the racism of the elderly Tory party members.

And anyone wonders why the Kenya parliament went over that trade deal with a microscope.

There's an old joke Hmm about NASA wanting to include a message from all Americans on one of the deep space probes. Native Americans proved tricky as they don't have a written system, but the Cherokee Nation does and supplied a text. It was a NASA engineer of Cherokee descent who spotted it said "Don't trust these guys, they'll steal your land and make you slaves."

DGRossetti · 03/03/2021 10:08

Will provide interesting - and possibly vital - data for 2024. I think Labour might be in for a shock. The only problem with that is, I can see the response being to lecture the electorate on why they are wrong rather than to accept it's the policies that are wrong. A sort of rerun of Corbynistas versus electoral success we had in 2019 where Corbynistas swept the board.

A party campaigning to rejoin the EU will field candidates in the London Assembly election in May, it has been revealed.
