Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

Sabrina
an unlikely scenario because the sailing wouldn't be delayed by a week?
Yup.
The longest I've ever known the boats to totally stop was about 24 hours
and that was before the days of the tunnel
( it was after the storm of 87 when berths were damaged, nothing to do with French fishermen BTW )

What a surprise not Wink

Sostenueto · 08/11/2020 18:45

Raab nearly lost it on Marr show this morning concerning Brexit and lack of a deal....so funny!

Peregrina · 08/11/2020 18:46

Why, if the USA wants a trade deal with the EU, will they negotiate one with the UK first to use as an example? Now if we already had a deal up and running, that might be different.

FishesaPlenty · 08/11/2020 19:14

I read the query as meaning if the trucker is Dover bound and has his KAP for the planned sailing to the EU, and then it gets delayed and the trucker returns to base, he'd need a fresh KAP to make the journey to load onto the later sailing.

The quote was "Like if a trucker is already Dover-bound but the shipper rolls the export onto the next vessel sailing a week later? Does the KAP remain valid?"

There are very limited situations where anyone would/could 'roll forward' the exit of a specific truck/load combination to "the next vessel sailing a week later", on a UK/EU short crossing. He's not referring to normal ferry/train freight between Dover/France and he obviously doesn't understand the actual issues.

How much space is there at Dover to leave containers / trailers?

I suspect he thinks he needs a KAP for any export goods entering Kent, whether they're held at the port or at a forwarder.

@Clavinova

But he also though Trump would win this election. Not quite sure what value his opinion has.

He nearly won - he had you worried.

It is neither here nor there. 52/48 is ' a landslide'. 😉

Yes, we were worried as we now know what under-educated, unschooled in critical thinking skills, a dog-whistle media can produce.

For the record, my brother voted Brexit. OK, it cost him his job (but luckily our DM dying and leaving him enough cash to buy a small house outright salvaged that for him) but even he concedes it was the (and I quote him) 'Ignorant as pig shit' voters who pushed Brexit over the line. He is far more disparaging of them than I am! But he recognises a useful idiot when he sees one.

Which is where I think a lot of Republican sentiment lies.

Oh, and this isn't the Brexit my DB voted for 🙄

FTR...

Miljea · 08/11/2020 19:19

@Clavinova

How about he lost - get over it?

I don't need to "get over it" - I'm not a fan of Trump - or Biden unfortunately.

You do need to 'get over it' as your 'nearly won' remark suggests.

He lost. He's a loser. Like us Remainers.....

Zixxy · 08/11/2020 19:24

Brexit landscape will be a little different now I think. But time will tell.

ListeningQuietly · 08/11/2020 19:53

Fishes
The trouble with the whole Channel Ports crossing shit
is that those who are "designing" have never sat and watched the lanes move.

I had a VERY bouncy message from BigChocFrenzy
mood in Germany is that Biden will change the rules of the game
for the better of the EU

She's not coming back here soon, but (like LeClerc ) she'll keep an eye.

Miljea · 08/11/2020 20:05

Ah, BCF and LeClerc continue to be missed on here.

Apileofballyhoo · 08/11/2020 20:14

It's lovely to see BCF updates, Listening, thank you. Hope LeClerc is doing well also.

Clavinova · 08/11/2020 20:55

No, I don't - I was quite a fan of Hillary Clinton as it happens.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 08/11/2020 22:17

It's seems the Biden administration really doesn't like Johnson. Which makes me think "serves him right" but also worried that Johnson will be too bloody pig headed to do right by the country.

Peregrina · 08/11/2020 22:25

That will give him someone else to blame for not getting his Great Deal but it might make Brexit the Titanic success he promised.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2020 06:41

Georgie Wright, of the Institute for Government (Guardian link upthread) is talking nonsense.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2020 06:46

Re the most recent government u-turn. Given that there was a vote in Parliament in which the majority voted against free school meals during holidays - how can the Government now decide to ignore the vote?

They have lost track of the meaning of 'advisory vote', but that's old news.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2020 06:50

How will a loser racist misogynist possibly manage to campaign against a successsful black woman ?

You'd be surprised.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2020 06:57

He nearly won - he had you worried.

290+ vs maybe 250, best case scenario, isn't that close.

Maybe go back and check how that Electoral College thing works.

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 08:42

How will a loser racist misogynist possibly manage to campaign against a successsful black woman ?

The evangelical/fundamentalist Christians which make up part of his fan base are very big on wives submitting to husbands - so they really don't like to see a woman in power. They gloss over the bits of the Bible which say that God created men and women equal.

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 08:46

290+ vs maybe 250, best case scenario, isn't that close.

I make that 54:46% which by Brexit arithmetic is overwhelming! Isn't it rather similar to the split in the votes for Scottish Independence?

usuallydormant · 09/11/2020 10:18

Hello all, long time lurker and delighted to see some good news at last. Not sure if this has been shared already: moving in its own right but also clear that the first catholic Irish American since Kennedy is still connected to his ancestry and Ireland is ready to milk it.

But happy as I am to hear the US reiterate support for the GFA in relation to Brexit, it is good news for international agreements in general. The IMB has also attracted a lot of negative reaction from UN bodies - as Mary Robinson pointed out, the UK, as a member of the UN Security Council has a responsibility to up hold and defend international law. Hopefully they will see sense and quietly drop the offending articles from the bill...

DGRossetti · 09/11/2020 10:28

Be interesting how it gets done. Although I imagine the Raab steel-balls approach of insisting it was the EU that made us do it will be part of the strategy, and it will be spun into some sort of bullshit about how it made the EU back down so it's not needed or similar.

Similarly, the "logic" of not falling off a cliff edge on 31st December because we are so close to an agreement will come into play.

On a totally different point, having briefed myself about the Biden/Harris team, I have to say I may be more in awe of Kamala Harris mother than Kamala - very impressive lady. It's also fascinating to note that Kamala is very proud - and engaged with her Indian heritage. I imagine she is looking forward to lectures about the British Empire from Boris and his team. After all, she's only heard rumours ...

(As a Brit who actually commemorates our Empire, I feel a twang of pride that someone from India has made it so far in the US - there is a shared history for better for worse).

SabrinaThwaite · 09/11/2020 10:45

Hopefully they will see sense and quietly drop the offending articles from the bill...

Useless Eustice this morning on Sky:

Joe Biden has made it very clear that he will not accept any undermining of the GFA..... so if the Lords strip out the clauses that break international law will the government reinstate them straight away?

George Eustice - Yes we will.

usuallydormant · 09/11/2020 10:52

As I typed "see sense" I did feel the futility based on past experience of this lot ....

Clavinova · 09/11/2020 10:52

It's also fascinating to note that Kamala is very proud - and engaged with her Indian heritage.

Both Rishi Sunak and Priti Patel have Indian heritage of course - and they both hold two of the most important offices of state in the UK.
