Westminstenders: What the winds bring

The next few weeks are crucial. Eu talks, covid handling, the US election and any other unexpected events (its nearly November, lets face it will probably be the weather).

It feels a little like the car crash in slow motion is about to hit the wall of reality. I guess that just means all there is left to do is to brace for impact.

DGR, They're going to run out of traffic cones, aren't they?🤦🏻‍♀️

ListeningQuietly · 27/10/2020 19:15

From that Reuters article
What makes British logistics so vulnerable to huge change is the fact that the industry is so fragmented, with a dense mosaic of drivers, freight forwarders and customs brokers working with small exporters and importers.
LOTS of tractor units are are owner driver self employed
(on both sides of the channel)

Even the biggest companies rely on the subbie drivers
and those guys WILL NOT do the Channel run
if its going to take 6 days rather than 3

I told you so will be carved on my forehead soon

Chersfrozenface · 27/10/2020 19:17

@pussycatinboots

DGR, They're going to run out of traffic cones, aren't they?🤦🏻‍♀️
(makes note to investigate importing traffic cones from China)

I part-own a company. OK, it doesn't import or sell traffic cones, or indeed anything else, we're in the service sector. Still, little details like that haven't stopped wannabe ferry operators and PPE suppliers, so I don't see why they should stop me.

Zeebeezee · 27/10/2020 19:39

I am living in ROI and look on aghast at what UK has become now. They don't care (but never did in Empire fashion) about the impact their approach will have on us here. Hey ho.

But I am living hopefully.... that the penny will drop very soon. Anyone with me on this or is it full steam ahead to disaster because, well.... we are Brexiteers and the ERG rule the roost or something daft like that.

Head wrecking stuff. And along with Covid it is just, well I have few words now.

Seriously, how do you in UK think the end game will be? I cannot fathom it personally.

colouringindoors · 27/10/2020 19:50

Thats the million dollar question zeebeezee. It's almost unimaginable. I fear it could be really bad with serious shortages, civil unrest, increase in crime and general death rates. Or maybe the Tories will throw loads more money at ensuring food and medication imports are maibtained post 1 Jan. And bankrupt the country? We're so used to peacetime and everything running as usual, it's really difficult for many to picture things being vv different (worse).

Zeebeezee · 27/10/2020 20:12

Thanks @colouringindoors.

Difficult to see how anyone will benefit, but I have no doubt some of the Connected will. That is their aim obviously. They are not doing this for everyone's benefit anyway. Far from it.

TheABC · 27/10/2020 20:18

@Zeebeezee, if it gets really bad there will be riots. Not to mention the knock-on effects to the various industries around the UK. I suspect Johnson will become the sacrificial scapegoat to stop the Tory party from being tarnished as incompetent. Whether that will work...well, we will see.

Zeebeezee · 27/10/2020 20:26

I reckon Johnson will bail out soon anyway. He is a charlatan and a lazy bugger. But he will be able to capitalise on his time as PM during some tough times, together with his battle against Covid.

Who will his successor be I wonder lol?

colouringindoors · 27/10/2020 20:27

zeebeezee oh many Tories and their backers will benefit financially I am certain.

colouringindoors · 27/10/2020 20:29

Gove, Sunak or Hunt?
Gove = more Cummings
Sunak = as much a Tory as the rest but better looking
Hunt = ? good question, haven't heard from him in a while.

Who would honestly want the job though? It will be carnage by then surely?!

prettyscarybird · 27/10/2020 20:38

Brady? He's been posturing more than is normal for the Chairman of the 1922 Committee.

ListeningQuietly · 27/10/2020 20:56

I had a catch up with my USA informant today
which Government is more shit, yours or ours?
was the opening line
it went downhill from there Grin

mathanxiety · 27/10/2020 20:56

Pmk

Zeebeezee · 27/10/2020 21:10

Honestly if Brexit goes ahead with no deal, the logistics are very scary for everyone, even me and I don't live in the UK!

Imports and exports, tariffs, no tariffs, truck stops, ferries, medicines, radiological treatments and millions (that is no exaggeration) of other blips and problems along the way to FREEDOM from the EU.

Oh and Covid too.

Can only smile and hope for the best now.

mrslaughan · 27/10/2020 21:15

Hunt has actually been cropping up a wee bit - he's chair of the health select committee- so gets interviewed quite a lot. Walks a fine line of being part of the government, while not agreeing with the decisions made....trying not to be too overtly critical (probably trying to not end up with a target on his back)

GeistohneGrenzen · 27/10/2020 22:18

France rumoured to go back into nation lockdown from midnight tomorrow

A new thread just started around 2145 by a poster in very rural area in France - I assume Mistigri and Auld Alliance and others affected must be aware?

May be only a rumour of course...

colouringindoors · 27/10/2020 22:44

Can you link to that thread?

RedToothBrush · 27/10/2020 23:20

www.vice.com/amp/en/article/qjp48x/is-the-us-already-in-a-new-civil-war?__twitter_impression=true
Is the U.S. Already in a New Civil War?
Experts say that a new civil conflict will look nothing like the last American Civil War, but that the country is on the verge of large scale political violence.

If Trump loses, hes still gonna be stirring up shit on twitter. Tonight hes said something about Biden getting shot in his 3rd week as president if he wins.

Trump will continue to destabilise the US even if he loses.

colouringindoors · 27/10/2020 23:25

Just saw that Trump video. "Three weeks, Biden's shot" seriously worrying.

DrBlackbird · 27/10/2020 23:38

Is it just me or does it somehow feel that we're accelerating towards endgame Brexageddon? Just a slightly hyperbolic PMK... Grin

Seriously, is it possible that the result of this chaos will be Johnson et al just waving on through whoever's lorries want to come into the UK? No paperwork, customs checks etc How else to keep grocery stores stocked??

Yes, we'd see new soaring people smuggling, but if the alternative is no food or petrol wouldn't Johnson say screw it and let all the lorries in without checking documents and permits that none are likely to have in any event?

Now, can we see the EU doing that in terms of our lorries going over to the continent? Hmm, let me think for a nanosecond ... no of course not. But that's another problem.

DrBlackbird · 27/10/2020 23:44

@colouringindoors

Just saw that Trump video. "Three weeks, Biden's shot" seriously worrying.
That's akin to Henry II calling for someone to get rid of the meddlesome priest.

I'm beginning to seriously worry about The Handmaiden's Tale becoming too close to reality for comfort.

HoldMyLobster · 28/10/2020 01:07

Just saying hello for now. Have been so focused on Covid and US election stuff that I haven't thought about Brexit for a while. Looking for distraction...

borntobequiet · 28/10/2020 06:09

Hi Lobster - I find that flicking between these threads, the Trump ones and a Staffroom one about teaching in COVID times provides plenty of distraction!
