Westminstenders: What the winds bring

The next few weeks are crucial. Eu talks, covid handling, the US election and any other unexpected events (its nearly November, lets face it will probably be the weather).

It feels a little like the car crash in slow motion is about to hit the wall of reality. I guess that just means all there is left to do is to brace for impact.

From this afternoon:

Michel Barnier @MichelBarnier
Updating @Europarl_EN & Member States on European Union / United Kingdom negotiations today.

Despite EU efforts to find solutions, very serious divergences remain in Level Playing Field, Governance & Fisheries. These are essential conditions for any economic partnership.

The European Union is prepared for all scenarios.

David Frost @DavidGHFrost
We've just finished two weeks of intensive talks with the EU.

Progress made, but I agree with @MichelBarnier that wide divergences remain on some core issues. We continue to work to find solutions that fully respect UK sovereignty.

Laura Kuenssberg @bbclaurak
UK negotiator on Brexit talks - both sides agree there's some progress towards a deal, but still work to do. Barnier's team likely to be back in London next week to keep going

One senior figure involved suggests crunch moment possible in about 10 days with another likely shove from a PM - Von Der Leyen contact - but all a bit fluid - a few days pause now after days of talks

Despite some speculation about impact of turmoil in US, people actually involved in talks suggest there isn't likely to be an impact

Source deeply involved on UK side says, US elex 'isn’t relevant to the deal being negotiated or the chances of it happening, unless Brussels is foolish enough to delay things because they think Biden will somehow change things'

On EU side however doesn't seem much indication that they would make that link in any case (if Biden does end up in White House) - issues are 'mature' and 'well known' enough on both sides

So overall - there are still problems that need to be resolved between the two sides before a deal can be done - not withstanding the obvious pressure of time running out as we head towards the end of the year, as you were

Biden: We have enough votes for 270. I'm not going to declare but I do think when all the votes are in, we will be the winners.

I don't think I would take Jason Hunter as a reliable source. He has got a number of things wrong since 2016. If it were e.g. Peter Foster or Tony Connelly on the other hand...

wherearemychickens · 04/11/2020 21:13

The Barnier statement didn't sound too positive earlier. They are leaving it all a bit late if there is going to be a deal.

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 21:17

Biden's speech. DH: "He sounds like a president. We have a president again." Emotional tones to his voice.

He gave me echoes of Regan in his tone!

The fact he keeps banging on about "solutions that respect UK sovereignty" suggests to me that they are going to cave but insist that the caving respects UK sovereignty and everyone will believe them because they have insisted that they will only agree a deal that respects UK sovereignty. And if they repeat the phrase respects UK sovereignty enough, they are sending a not very subliminal message that anything they do respects UK sovereignty

ListeningQuietly · 04/11/2020 21:21

It is worth reiterating
WITH BELLS ON
that the outcome of the US Election will influence the total relationship between the EU and the US
and how (or whether) the UK fits in
Sad

Interesting thread from @tconnellyRTE - a reminder that a #Brexit trade deal is far from certain.
We must continue to prepare as a country for all outcomes. A deal remains doable but very difficult. Time is short.
Thank u @MichelBarnier for your calm and consistent approach.

Tony Connelly @tconnellyRTE
New: @MichelBarnier has given a "very downbeat" briefing to EU ambassadors on the state of play in the Brexit negotiations, @rtenews understands

2/ While there has been good progress on police and judicial cooperation, there has been no progress at all on the level playing field, fisheries and governance.

3/ In some of these areas Mr Barnier told diplomats that the UK had gone backwards on earlier understandings, such as the idea of a robust independent competition authority in the UK

4/ Mr Barnier was also adamant that on fisheries the EU wd expect reciprocal access to UK waters and a continuation of quota shares - ie, he was said to be highly irritated by press reports that the EU wd be prepared to park the issue of quotas and concede on access for EU fleets

5/ He is also said to have emphasised that the fishing arrangement has to be on a "stable" basis and not on an annual negotiation, which has been a UK demand. He said there was "very little progress" on the fish talks

6/ Mr Barnier said there was "no progress" on LPF - esp on the idea of non regression, where he said the UK had resiled from promises on environment, labour conditions, climate, tax. "There have been absolutely no positive developments" says one source.

7/ It's understood Mr Barnier believes the UK is "too relaxed" about the time frame, ie not taking account of the European Parliament's timetable to ratify the treaty, once it's legally scrubbed and translated etc

8/ He is said to have told diplomats that next week will therefore be "decisive" and that if there is no progress on the key issues we will be in a serious situation

10/ A source has said that this could be the darkest moment of the process, and that it could presage some light. However, the belief is that the UK is pressing for a grand bargain at the end involving fish and the level playing field, and this worries Mr Barnier.

Foster also saying no further progress...

I agree, Biden DID sound Presidential (far more than the orange Fool)

He also emphasised the importance of unity and America reuniting.
'we have more in common than that which divides us'
Optimistic - but America needs optimism right now.

AuldAlliance · 04/11/2020 21:33

Glad I put the disclaimer, then.

Am exhausted by everything. Lockdown, the 1km perimeter, friends spouting conspiracy theories, ongoing and unending crap at work, terrorist attacks, probability of schools shutting within weeks, my parents miles away and Brexit about to unfurl more crap on them...
Info about student visas for the UK after 01/01/21 that will probably kill off any student mobility longer than 6mths for EU students landed last night, just to hammer home how much the current generation have lost that mine took entirely for granted.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/11/2020 21:55

What in the actual fuck was that Eric Trump/Rudi Guilliani press conference??? I've had too much and yet not enough alcohol to figure that out. Sounded like our resident character having a rant about the leaves that are ruthlessly attacking him to anyone who will listen on the school run.

SabrinaThwaite · 04/11/2020 21:56

Dumb and Dumberer.

Greektome · 04/11/2020 21:58

Oh joy (from the Guardian):

"Donald Trump has said he might leave the US if he loses the White House to Joe Biden next month. If so, he has just been handed the perfect place to eke out his final days – by playing golf on a new course in Aberdeenshire, his second in the area.

If Trump does choose such an option, he can expect a robust welcome from conservationists, however. They say last week’s decision by Aberdeenshire council planners to approve the course could have a catastrophic impact on the area’s delicate environment."

SabrinaThwaite · 04/11/2020 22:02

Trump won’t move to Aberdeen.

Too cold.

And they talk funny.

ListeningQuietly · 04/11/2020 22:03

For those who want to know what Guiliani is really like
watch the new BORAT film
it is genuinely brilliant
do NOT watch it with teenage kids
and the Guiliani sequence is astounding

Ugh...made the mistake of tuning in before turning in, just in time to hear that, although Biden is still ahead in Arizona, the gap is narrowing.

That’s me done for the night. Foolishly, I didn’t go to bed at all last night and I’m starting to feel a bit unhinged. Good night all...

52andblue · 04/11/2020 23:21

Good night @FlouncingBabooshka

(I was nodding on sofa at 8pm and am now like the sodding Duracell bunny, gah...)

mathanxiety · 05/11/2020 05:09

Trump isn't really interested in a legal challenge or its outcome. He is appealing for funds to finance legal challenges as a means to encourage the idea among his more twitchy and paranoid supporters that the election is being stolen, with his continuous references to votes being 'found' and the suits already filed to stop the counting of mail-in votes.

He wants militias on the streets.

FlouncingBabooshka · 05/11/2020 06:01

Been awake sine 4.00 after not going to bed at all on Tuesday.

So Trump supporters are protesting to get all the counting done where they think Trump could close in on Biden but protesting to stop the count where Biden is closing in on Trump... Hmm
