Westminstenders: What the winds bring

The next few weeks are crucial. Eu talks, covid handling, the US election and any other unexpected events (its nearly November, lets face it will probably be the weather).

It feels a little like the car crash in slow motion is about to hit the wall of reality. I guess that just means all there is left to do is to brace for impact.

pepper
Brexit, or rather the end of Transition is less than 60 days away.
While the US election is undecided, Johnson has been able to sell the mirage of a good trade deal with the USA
while COVID scorches the earth at home.
By Saturday, the reality of that will be clear (even if the result is not final)
so Brexit will climb back up the news Agenda

@ListeningQuietly

baroque New York and Florida both have 29 EC votes, but the New York outcome is not in doubt Wink
Aaaah, hadn't realised they had the same number LQ! But yes, even Melania could figure out she'd be on a hiding to nothing voting in NY ☺
Peregrina · 03/11/2020 23:14

Just posting to see if it posts once or twice.

The first polls should close soon in the USA. It's something I don't understand about their system - the polls in the eastern states close, and they 'call' the result, and meanwhile the polls are still open in the western states. Surely this will influence the result?

SabrinaThwaite · 03/11/2020 23:16

Of course Melania has it worked out - she’s not on the Einstein visa for nothing!

Oh, wait a minute ...

SwedishEdith · 03/11/2020 23:21

@Pepperwort

I know the north west quite well, unfortunately (was born there and have family there). I wouldn't say there's a protestant/ catholic divide at all. What there is is an assumption that everyone is Christian, so I suppose that might look like a divide from the outside, when the question is whether you're catholic or protestant. Speaking as a Midlander I'm disgusted by the influence Christianity has up there. It's rare to find a non-religious school for instance. It's, ahem, interesting to contrast the amount of crime and various -isms up there too.
I'm curious about this as the NW is a pretty big area with completely different demographics in different parts. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "the influence Christianity has up there" but the high level of Irish immigration accounts for much of the religious schools. Liverpool even had Catholic and Protestant political parties!
SabrinaThwaite · 03/11/2020 23:31

Voting in Oklahoma City today - that’s some line.

I've always wondered about this but the exit polls are just breaking down the voting into various demographics. I suppose it becomes clearer one way or the other but do they 'call' the result while polls are still open?

Feel terrible

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 03:15

Dosed for an hour after seeing the way it was headed. Now its even worse. This is horrendous and no one has quite realised just how much this is a disaster for the world.

I know Biden wont be President in the morning at this point, and even if this goes to the wire in some states its too late now. Ballots wont be counted and legal challenges wont hold. Its done.

We are all truly fucked and i really do fear for the future now.

Trump will make some unholy alliances and democracy is done.

Woke up on sofa.

It's over.

MalorieSnooty · 04/11/2020 03:35

The polling error is quite big in Florida, but polls seem to be more accurate elsewhere. There's still hope. Although I don't think the Senate will flip.

tobee · 04/11/2020 03:41

Still talking up Arizona on beeb. Maybe too late.
