I think that there may be a run on tinned tomatoes and pasta coming. Pizza will no longer have mozzarella in 2021.

On the plus side turnips are in season.

although the family friend who thought it would stop immigrants coming here, but that it wouldn't impact his desire to retire to Spain was a bit shocked.

That level of arrogance is just shocking

DGRossetti · 26/10/2020 11:13

Its why so many of the different strands of why people voted are conflicting, although the family friend who thought it would stop immigrants coming here, but that it wouldn't impact his desire to retire to Spain was a bit shocked.

The current spat over passport gates is going to be interesting if international travel picks up again. It will be the first contact many people will have with a tangible effect of Brexit.

More Caledonian cartography.

@HesterThrale I am with you in the anxiety over no measures being taken. I listened to independent sage on Friday abs the message was that the infection is accelerating in all areas. They also went through what a strict lockdown would buy us..... it was a really compelling argument.
My sister was in Cornwall last week - on the way back the road was flooded with cars heading the other direction. Her comment was the rate is low down their, but will that change.....and I think the answer is, that it is.

On another note we are coming to the end of a 14 day isolation . My son has been sick for a couple of weeks, and has had two negative tests - but his cough changed (he is prone to chest infections, has has pneumonia and is asthmatic) and he developed a temp. Even though his test was negative we were told we should self isolate because there are so many false negatives and he has two of the symptoms.....I think we would be in the minority to follow that advice......

That'll be nice, they'll need the tourism to replace their EU grants.

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 11:43

They'll need more than Tourism.

I wonder if Westminster is going to keep paying the grants to them?

mrslaughan · 26/10/2020 11:45

She always goes this time if the year - she loves it because it's quiet..... this year it wasn't.

pointythings · 26/10/2020 11:48

I've just read that Daniel Hannan article. He really needs to have that re-posted to his Twitter about a million times.

I doubt it. I apologise if I have missed it, but one thing that could be a useful resource - along with that list of companies leaving the UK - would be a list of all the factions that are now putting their hands out for our cash because they've lost EU money due to Brexit.

Off the top of my head we have farmers, fishermen, the Welsh and the Cornish. Any more for any more ?

HesterThrale · 26/10/2020 11:57

@mrslaughan I hope your DS recovers quickly. It’s worrying getting any infection at the moment, and wondering what it could be...

And as I expected... lockdown recast as Tier 4?

‘Tier 4’: Matt Hancock declines to rule out introduction of new level of Covid restrictions

But it’s a bit late now.

Or the Amazon reviews of his book ...

www.amazon.co.uk/How-Invented-Freedom-Why-Matters/dp/1781857563?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

The full, rather cringeworthy title is "How We Invented Freedom & Why It Matters". Which really should have prompted a slew of questions as to the titular "we", as I suspect that it wouldn't include any posters on this thread. Or indeed any women. And even the men it includes probably have more names than nipples. I've always found "we" from a politician a trigger word like "Alexa" or "Siri". It engages the bullshit detector in my brain.

mrslaughan · 26/10/2020 12:05

@HesterThrale I am really worried they are going to leave it too late, costing thousands of lives..... DH thinks Johnson is waiting until closer to Xmas, so that then he can go, "we got it under control and you were able to have family Christmas's" ..... except those who have lost loved ones unnecessarily... whether through discharging Covid + patients into care homes, or not admitting over 60's into ICU.

The doctor came out to the car and listened to DS's chest - he knows his chest well and said it didn't sound if asthma or chest infection.,... so it was a virus- just whether of not it's THE virus.....

We also had a quick chat about flu vaccine shortages......

I think Britania Unchained is a far better book for those looking to understand what Brexit will look like.

This was always the aim.

DGRossetti · 26/10/2020 12:13

@TomMRiddle

I think Britania Unchained is a far better book for those looking to understand what Brexit will look like.

This was always the aim.

I wasn't suggesting anyone read Hannons tome - assuming they could get past the first page.

Although I see it's free on Kindle Unlimited. Which does open the door to planting a review as a confirmed purchaser Smile

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 12:22

Go for it.

:)

I'm always baffled by those who haven't read what the people running their campaigns thought Brexit would look like.

Its obvious from Hannan, Farage and The "Unchained" mob that most people's interests are not met.

DGRossetti · 26/10/2020 12:27

I'm always baffled by those who haven't read what the people running their campaigns thought Brexit would look like.

Because it's easy to parrot a slogan than read a book. Remember how anti intellectual England really is.

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 12:37

Yes, and this of course is part of the reason why the "left behind areas:" have been left behind.

But that's my private theory. lol

DGRossetti · 26/10/2020 13:10

All of which being said, it's amusing seeing the Tories - who arguably engineered the no-nuance society in cahoots with their media mates - now desperately trying to talk about nuance and balance and complexity to a public condition to a good/bad mentality, and currently finding Tories "bad". The phrase about petard seems especially appropriate ...

mrslaughan · 26/10/2020 14:04

In the Twitter link I just posted is a fairly robust rebuttal of the posturing on the economic benefits of Brexit. It's v clear, joined up thinking..... not about feelinz, by By @AdamPosen, President of the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

ListeningQuietly · 26/10/2020 14:38

Its sunny
Its half term
Its nearly November 3rd
And I really do think that Brexit brinkmanship WILL be affected
because the UK will have it spelled out in words of one syllable that as non EU members they become an utter irrelevance in the new global order.

For some reason I have (again) just seen the timeless classic scene from "Enter The Dragon" where Bruce Lee manages to trick his gobshite opponent into setting himself adrift.

Its pushing down here. Its not half term everywhere. The UK Govt has long ago stopped being held accountable by brexshitters so doesn't really matter does it?

I may be in a bit of a mood today 😁

Shrillharridan · 26/10/2020 15:18

Pissing it down.
My phone hates naughty words 😁

SabrinaThwaite · 26/10/2020 15:19

@TomMRiddle

Sabrina, that wasn't propoesed. That slide was the heads of government showing what deal the UK red lines would allow.

The EU said in 2017 that the proximity to the EU and how interconnected the economies were would not allow for a Canada deal.

The whole " they offered Canada" thing is, as usual with the leave camp, bullshit.

From 3 years ago:

The EU is preparing to present Britain with a skeleton, Canada-style trade deal by the early summer if the UK is unable to clarify its demands and remains in “Brexit La-La land”, according to senior European officials.

The fallback plan considered by Brexit negotiators underlines the concern in Brussels, Berlin and Paris over Theresa May’s approach to future relations, which they fear will be too muddled to allow for meaningful negotiations.

Such a proposal would fall far short of what Britain is hoping for, with limited access for services, which make up a large part of the UK economy.

www.ft.com/content/30705bfc-e5a6-11e7-97e2-916d4fbac0da

And then a year later:

On a Brexit agreement with the UK, Tusk said: "From the very beginning, the EU offer has been not just a Canada deal, but a Canada+++ deal.

"Much further-reaching on trade, on internal security and on foreign policy cooperation.

"This is a true measure of respect and this offer remains in place.

"The EU is serious about getting the best possible deal.

"Even though we haven’t changed our minds that the consequences of Brexit will be negative, for both sides."

www.cityam.com/donald-tusk-offers-uk-canada-style-trade-deal-blow-theresa/amp/

But that was over 2 years ago, a Canada type deal would take a long time to set up, as it requires going through everything line by line.
