I knew this was on the cards but now feel really sick.
Do you think he's bluffing to make the EU blink or is this it?

I say this as, previously, a lifelong Tory voter. I am disgusted by the conservatives behaviour during the last 4 years

Conservatives in name only. All of the sane moderates have been flushed from the front benches for a while now to be replaced by nodding donkeys.

....whilst the swivel-eyed loons remain. It's fucking depressing.
pontypridd · 16/10/2020 16:08

Gosh. How do you know this @CrunchyNutNC?

I'm not doubting what you say at all. It makes perfect sense. But where did you get this information from? Is it widely known in certain circles?

If this is true it should be public knowledge. Why have papers like the Guardian not picked up on it? Or maybe they have ...

Which is why I CANNOT forgive other parties for allowing the 2019 GE. They all knew what was facing them. They ALL sold the country down the river and for what?

WrongKindOfFace · 16/10/2020 16:13

It’s not a surprise, but what a bunch of fucking pricks.

The only tiny, tiny plus is that history will not look kindly on Johnson.

larrygrylls · 16/10/2020 16:17

The stock market seems very unfazed.

Wonder why.

Graphista · 16/10/2020 16:22

It's what the government (or Boris and his mates) wants - I have no idea why.

Really? They'll make a FORTUNE in disaster capitalism, not to mention business owners being able to do away with all those pesky employee rights and safety regs etc that cost them "too much" and they will NOT suffer the consequences! Not even close.

Johnson will likely sod off under a rock in America.

@CrunchyNutNC your post is mostly spot on but I will never understand anyone less than independently wealthy voting Tory especially if they're under say 55?

Why have papers like the Guardian not picked up on it? Or maybe they have ...

They did, they have and they told us and were ignored!

Guardian article here from 2016

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jul/04/disaster-capitalism-tory-right-brexit-roll-back-state

Plenty of us on mn have been explaining all this too.

larrygrylls · 16/10/2020 16:40

Lots of people favour small state, regardless of age.

The socialist/capitalist argument is not decided yet, although I think most now realise that neither extreme works.

Crony capitalism (what we seem to have at the moment) is clearly neither moral nor sustainable.

BillywilliamV · 16/10/2020 16:42

Feels like deckchairs on the Titanic at the moment.., but it’s probably the whole fucking iceberg!

CrunchyNutNC · 16/10/2020 16:49

pontypridd

Google guardian EU tax avoidance brexit and you'll get plenty of articles.

Whenever anyone calmly pointed out the problems with brexit they had "PROJECT FEAR!!!" screamed at them. The leave proponents were very cunning, they made it unpatriotic to want to remain in the EU, and their supporters (who were being very cynically manipulated) jumped on anyone who suggested there was a problem.

Boredbumhead · 16/10/2020 17:44

@pontypridd, @CrunchyNutNC puts it very well. Plus the EU have high standards on things like environment, food, workers rights. Once you remove all that it becomes a more competitive place to do business for those that care more about profits than people or the planet. Finally for people that trade on the international market, if the pound crashes people who know how to play the system can capitalise on that too.. Big data, big pharma, and industries like that will play a part. Dominic Cummings has openly admitted he was called by a very rich person and asked if he could pull off getting us out of the EU. I don't know who that rich person is though!

Graphista · 16/10/2020 21:06

Whenever anyone calmly pointed out the problems with brexit they had "PROJECT FEAR!!!" screamed at them.

Yep!

I'd be surprised if it was only ONE rich person/entity @Boredbumhead I suspect there's been a major push from the richest and morally worst capitalists.

Dustballs · 16/10/2020 21:35

I’m sure I saw a documentary where a rich fat man was really bothering Boris and hassling him to have the courage to push for no deal - or something like that. It was a Laura Kuenssberg documentary about Brexit.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/10/2020 21:45

I know that No Deal was always a possibility but I somehow naively thought that parliament wouldn't allow it. Including the moderate Tory MPs.

I read about this from multiple sources before, and after the referendum. It was widely circulated but dismissed as Project Fear by Brexiteers.
HoneysuckIejasmine · 16/10/2020 22:00

@Frazzled2207

He’s upping the pressure but as it stands talks are continuing so he’a bumbling out rhetoric as opposed to fact
Threatening to "shoot myself in the foot if you don't give me what I want" is not putting pressure on the EU. If anything it underlines that Johnson is a shit parent - he's clearly never dealt with a toddler who hasn't been given the sweets they wanted. Hmm

If the UK want to commit self harm, I see no reason for the EU to compromise their entire organisation to stop us.

MarshmallowManiac · 16/10/2020 23:35

Well always knew it was coming, just feel over the next ten weeks want to slowly get as much as we can for Christmas and the inevitable car crash off the cliff! Hmm

airedailleurs · 17/10/2020 08:00
@pontypridd

The EU were going to start putting the screws on ultra wealthy people who avoid paying tax.

Being in the EU benefits the ordinary man far more than it does the super rich.

These ultra wealthy people then manipulated voters, playing on their fears about immigrants, and selling a 'control our own destiny' story to get them to vote for something which is not in their best interest. They peddled nonsense about leaving but still being able to have all the benefits of EU membership. They did sneaky (illegal) things during the campaign.

We are leaving, the ordinary man in the street will be screwed over, but JRM and rich Tories will avoid having to pay an appropriate amount of tax, so that'll be ok then.

I say this as, previously, a lifelong Tory voter. I am disgusted by the conservatives behaviour during the last 4 years.
Absolutely correct.

joystir59 · 17/10/2020 08:09

I only eat British chicken or beef and those rarely. Will these no longer be safe?

You'll no longer be allowed to know whether or not it's British, if the US standard of "no labels of origin allowed" is included. Eventually of course UK farmers will need to start lowering their standards to stay competitive, or go out of business.
larrygrylls · 17/10/2020 08:16

Honey,

Do you really think upper East Side Manhattanites eat chlorinated chicken?!

Battery chicken standards in Europe are nothing to be proud of.

If you care about standards, pay up for decent free range or organic chicken. It is ludicrous to say that importing dead animals from the US is worse than what is allowed in Europe with regard to transporting living sentient animals long distances within the EU.

KooKooKachu · 17/10/2020 08:17

Why are Brexiteers not celebrating No Deal on here? Where are they all? Why has it gone quiet as Brexit looms. I thought this is what they wanted and would be shouting from the rooftops. There's some very vocal ones I recall from after the referendum. Why aren't they coming back on to gloat? Confused

Mistigri · 17/10/2020 08:18

pay up for decent free range or organic chicken

Privilege dripping from this post.

If you can't afford free range or organic chicken then you deserve to have to feed your children food that needs to be bleached before it is safe to eat.

Mistigri · 17/10/2020 08:22

Honey

And I guess this "little woman" put down was deliberate. We see you.

larrygrylls · 17/10/2020 08:22

Misti,

No. If you cannot afford chicken reared humanely, eat meat free more often.

And even good chicken, bought whole, and cooked from fresh, is far cheaper than most ready meals.

If caring for animals is privilege, count me in as very privileged.
