Westminstenders: The Tunnel or Bridge

RedToothBrush · 06/10/2020 15:18

Apparently negotiations are in the black hole of the EU tunnel or should that be on the back of the fantasy of the Boris Bridge?

Another week closer to complete meltdown.

I'm guessing that our world beating customs solution will be based on blackboard and chalk.

"Boris is quite happy to hire a hitman"

I hope Rishi doesn't walk down any dark allies

ListeningQuietly · 08/10/2020 19:45

He's going to have to sort out his own IP address Wink
but LeClerc has spotted this little cookie

Phil Moorhouse talks about this today and points out that the UK has now signed up to the level playing field with the WTO which is essentially the same as it had with being a member of the EU, so no significant change except that of course the UK will just be billy no mates rather than as a member of the EU or another large trading bloc would be able to coordinate 27 or however many countries.

Of course Boris can say it is the UK getting a place at the WTO but the Brexiteers won't appreciate it's almost valueless AND it means there will be international scrutiny of UK government procurement and ability by others to sue the UK.

NHS to provide remdesivir to Covid patients after joint EU deal

Gosh, isn't it useful to have the muscle power of the EU behind us ....
until 11 pm 31 December

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/08/nhs-to-provide-remdesivir-to-covid-patients-after-joint-eu-deal

EU commission secures enough doses for 500,000 patients in 36 countries including UK
....
There is a global shortage of remdesivir because the US bought up all stocks from the US-based manufacturer Gilead from June to October.
Demand for the drug is ramping up following Trump’s treatment for Covid.

The commission signed a joint procurement deal with Gilead on Thursday on behalf of the bloc.
The UK joined in, < phew > having opted out of earlier negotiations on PPE and ventilators in favour of making its own deals.
......
Stella Kyriakides, the commissioner forhealth and food safety:

"Through our EU joint procurements, we are empowering countries across Europee^ to join forces and get access to vital equipment and medicines.
We are always stronger together, and this is European solidarity in action against Covid-19.”

Where is this questionnaire?

I want a go.

Hello All.

I know it was a long time ago - but my sister's health trust aren't doing routine testing either, Squid.

They all had an antibody test some time ago - and nothing since then.

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/10/2020 20:28

I did the questionnaire. Along with brewery worker and Non destructive Testing Technician (whatever that is), I could also be a boxer and a royal marine officer, both of which would be fun given I'm mid-50's and have arthritis.

Chersfrozenface · 08/10/2020 20:30

I found the questionnaire. Actually, the two top suggestions either would suit me (travel and tourism) or I have worked in (creative and media). The third, construction and trades, not so much.

Mind you, given that the first two are sectors completely hammered by the virus, retraining in them might not be the best idea, really.

On top of Covid, Trump and Brexit, Grimsvötn, a fissure volcano under the same glacier as Eyjafjallajökull, Is currently rumbling and the Icelandic Met Office has increased the aviation warning from green to yellow Shock. of course it's probably a false alarm Wink

Mistigri · 08/10/2020 20:52

Oh I just did that questionnaire too.

For the sake of full disclosure, I'm an economist working in a strategic planning role in manufacturing industry. I answered the questionnaire honestly. It recommended that I work in ... sports/leisure, the creative sector or construction Hmm Grin

I reckon that some high paid IT consultant is having a laugh at the tax payers' expense and it just makes completely random suggestions.

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/10/2020 20:56

Or else it's connected to the local jobs centre and is listing whatever vacancies they have that day.

Peregrina · 08/10/2020 21:18

I did the quiz - funnily enough, some were jobs I had done in the past, but others like being involved in sports, I would run a mile from.

I thought it was a big stupid .

Mistigri · 08/10/2020 21:22

Or else it's connected to the local jobs centre

Well it's definitely not connected to my local job centre, a thousand-odd kilometres south of the brand new Kent border Grin.

DGRossetti · 08/10/2020 21:25

Vaguely reminds me of the "AI" careers advice program on "Bad Education" ...

GeistohneGrenzen · 08/10/2020 21:26

I did the quiz and was happy to have a laugh at my own expense. My potential for versatility astounds me and I'm glad I'm too old for even this govt to expect me to work...

copy editor
circus performer
steeplejack
interpreter
agricultural inspector
psychologist
boxer

I was honest in my answers except I didn't declare the current decrepitudes that have come along with age Grin

QueenOfThorns · 08/10/2020 21:28

Yay, I can retrain as an astronomer! Shame it didn’t ask whether or not I’m interested in outer space, or it might have come up with something different...

borntobequiet · 08/10/2020 21:31

Some time (ie many years) ago a fellow (mature) student (Maths) of mine used a careers service questionnaire.
He had an interesting background, having previously worked as an auctioneer, played in a moderately successful rock band, run a pub and worked as an actor on and off.
The programme suggested he train as a firefighter.

AuldAlliance · 08/10/2020 21:51

Any questionnaire that suggests I could conceivably earn a living as a cake decorator should be scrapped asap.
It's either a joke or another job given to one of BJ's under-educated, over-qualified and over-confident pals.

Grateful for the laugh, though.

ListeningQuietly · 08/10/2020 22:04

The questionnaire is indeed funny
but its also deeply Scary
as if that is the standard of work and mindset
that the over remunerated unelected consultants who are running much of Whitehall at the moment
my hopes that the Transition Team will pull it out of a hat over the coming weeks
is
fuck all

RedToothBrush · 08/10/2020 22:18

The questionnaire said - amongst other things - I should take up a career as a graphic designer, various kinds of data people / researchers, a DJ or a TV Presenter.

I have to commend it on identifying that I've previously been a graphic designer, I'm pretty good at data/ research, I love music and I studied media on the basis of the questions it asked.

However, I'm not sure taking the plunge to be a DJ at the ripe old age of 42 with a 6 year old child in the middle of a pandemic.

I've got to be honest, its pretty good as an app you share your result on social media with your mates but beyond that, I think it might be lacking in anything of actual VALUE...

Nice gimmick though.

Hoho - amongst other things it did get to my old role (technical architect) but seemed to think this was a 39-40hr a week job - not on this planet it ain't.

SabrinaThwaite · 08/10/2020 23:27

I got (amongst others):

Astronomer
Plumber
Museum assistant
Stockbroker
Sports agent
