Westminstenders: The Tunnel or Bridge

RedToothBrush · 06/10/2020 15:18

Apparently negotiations are in the black hole of the EU tunnel or should that be on the back of the fantasy of the Boris Bridge?

Another week closer to complete meltdown.

I'm guessing that our world beating customs solution will be based on blackboard and chalk.

@Peregrina He seems to be saying the EU are walking away i.e. they won't give us what we want so they are walking away. All blame on them for being 'unreasonable.'

Let's see...

Peregrina · 16/10/2020 12:16

I see he was talking about the EU not giving a Canada style deal - which I thought the UK chose to rule out? Now it's 'an Australia style deal' a.k.a. No Deal.

Yes, it's being spun as the EU not giving in.

We have to hope now that Trump doesn't win next month, and the grand ideas about wonderful trade deals with the USA bite the dust.

Peregrina · 16/10/2020 12:22

I am puzzled as to how we can have an 'Australia style future' given that we haven't got the same mineral resources which Australia exports and are not as near to growing Asian markets as Australia is.

However, it was inevitable, I think - Johnson had backed himself into a corner. I don't know whether he really does think the EU will blink or whether he's just so totally in hock to Cummings/ERG that he can't think at all.

unmarkedbythat · 16/10/2020 12:25

Can we start saying "I told you so" yet? Or will that make no deal our fault, in the same way that saying "that's a stupid idea" made the Leave vote our fault and saying "voting Tory is a bad idea" made the last GE result our fault?

Bloody Brexiters have fucked this country for a generation at least and for what? For what? Such needless harm. I am so disappointed in people.

It's just words to print in the Express, really. Relation to real world: very low.
Sostenueto · 16/10/2020 12:26

Has Boris ever done such a thing as think?

Lol!

TokyoSushi · 16/10/2020 12:26

I think we all know that it's absolute nonsense that we can have an Australia style deal, It's no deal in a fancy coat. I think he does still think that they will blink, which they might, and we'll end up with come ultra crappy deal at the last minute.

PhilSwagielka · 16/10/2020 12:29

I'm looking forward to the possibility of going back into sex work next year. Some of my clients have missed me, though, so they'll be happy.

Reading Sky news is bad for my blood pressure.

Speaking from Downing Street after an EU summit both sides said was the deadline for hammering out a trade deal, Mr Johnson said it looked like the country was heading for what he called "the Australian solution".

Both sides did not say the summit was a deadline. Johnson said it was a deadline. At least get the basic facts right.

Of course you can have an Australia type deal. That's no deal.
Sostenueto · 16/10/2020 12:32

ONS average 27000+ cases a day of positive cases from begining of October to 8th. Well knew England rife with it nothing new there move on........

prettybird · 16/10/2020 12:32

As expected BJ is blaming the EU for not giving the UK the members' deal what it wanted everlasting cake Hmm

Anyone would think that the EU hasn't consistently told them this over the past 4 years Confused

Ah well, the Conservative Government and those that voted for them can take the credit for the outcome of (variously) the "easiest deal in history" and the "oven ready deal", so all the consequences, good unlikely Wink and bad are on them

They own it, they can deal with it. Angry

Meantime, I'll get on with my stockpiling Smile. The early days of Covid were a useful trial run - but the shortages then were just down to a combination of panic buying and changes in consumption (eating in rather than out). Not large bottlenecks in supply chains Sad

OchonAgusOchonO · 16/10/2020 12:33

I see he was talking about the EU not giving a Canada style deal - which I thought the UK chose to rule out?

Yes they did. But they've rewritten and whitewashed loads of other history regarding brexit so not really surprising.

OchonAgusOchonO · 16/10/2020 12:36

According to the sky article: And he urged people to "embrace the alternative" with "high hearts", vowing the UK will "prosper mightily".

So yes, saying "I told you so" will prevent the UK from prospering mightily and it will be all your fault (along with the EU of course).

prettybird · 16/10/2020 12:39

Iirc, CETA doesn't include Financial Services Hmm And it includes a MFN clause, which means that should the UK negotiate a deal that gives UK financial services access to the EU, then Canada gets it too.

Great. Life wasn't already hard enough...
Asking us to embrace that shit is plain insulting.

I'm sorry, but that sort of negatively kills unicorns. You need to get with the programme if you want your unicorn delivered on January 1st.
Songsofexperience · 16/10/2020 12:47

Brexit truly was and is the stupidest decision in modern history. Damn respect of other opinions. I'm angrier than I was in 2016! Those fucking votes are costing real people's livehoods and opportunities for our kids. Fuck brexit. Fuck brexiters. May they carry the fucking guilt of knowing they've screwed us all to their grave!

(Did I say I was angry?)

And where's the spineless opposition in all this??? I'll never forgive Labour for the complicity in this mess. They can try and "distance" themselves from the Tory mess blablabla... their shit stinks too!!!

Songsofexperience · 16/10/2020 12:49

Easiest trade deal in history.

Won't someone think of the German car manufacturers.

No Deal is better than a bad deal.

Nice portaloos in Kent.

I'm finding letting the anger and contempt I feel flow very freeing. Why should I pretend to respect the views of the people who have done this to us? I don't respect them, their opinions or their actions and I don't see why I should have to say that I do. They're selfish, ignorant fools and I don't feel inclined to pander to their precious feelings any more. They need to own the responsibility they have for what is about to happen to all of us.

Peregrina · 16/10/2020 12:56

However, Johnson got his mandate back in December last year, so this is his Brexit. Will we ever see sense prevail?

A friend who voted Remain but now does not want to talk about it still has faith in human nature, and thinks that people are resilient and will pull through.

Yes, you could have said that about 1930s Germany or Mussolini's Italy or the Spanish civil war - some people did pull through and eventually were able to build a better society. But think of the millions who did not survive, and think of the bitterness which the Spanish Civil War engendered.

Think of how badly Johnson has dealt with Covid - track and trace a mess, contracts put out to cronies who are then unable to fulfil them. So why does anyone think he could make a success of Brexit?

Yogatomorrow · 16/10/2020 13:02

Is BJ threatening the EU, softening the public for the reality of no-deal or preparing the ground for his "victory" when the EU "capitulates" and agrees to a waffer-thin deal?

All 3? Because straightforward and well-intentioned strategies are beyond them?

The cowardice of calling it this disaster "Australian". At least own no-deal. At least admit that a (imho unsound) judgement has been made that the EU's obligations are too high for access to their market.

Why do I even bother getting disgusted at their political immorality?

Peregrina · 16/10/2020 13:02

And where's the spineless opposition in all this??? I'll never forgive Labour for the complicity in this mess. They can try and "distance" themselves from the Tory mess blablabla... their shit stinks too!!!

Agreed - none of the Opposition parties should have let Johnson have his election in 2019 - the most stupid thing they did. Yes, Labour and LibDems are both complicit. They should have let Johnson carry on with his minority Government.....OK for the SNP because they are more likely to get their Independence out of it.

One should not gloat but for Wetherspoons it's Karma. Ain't it a bitch?
