On the Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Johnson went to Westminster Abbey and was trolled. Its almost divine in its irony.

In a week where just about the entire right wing press has turned on him, for being... well shit... They have the dawning realisation that yes all those annoying lefties were right all along when they said he was full of nothing but hot air. He's been ridiculed for being paid £150,000 a year and not being able to feed his 5000 kids and the pictures to mark the anniversary of him becoming PM do little more than look like a man who couldn't tie his own shoe laces without a nanny to help him.

But its not really a laughing matter. This man doesn't understand what legal agreements he's signed so his solution to his ineptitude is to throw his toys out of the pram together with the rule of law. Which he also does not understand.

Johnson is also ever increasingly keen on ripping up inconvient human right and workers right and he has ample opportunity to do all this in the middle of a pandemic.

Unfortunately the hypocrisy of his cronies isn't exactly helping the behaviour of the public and you have to pity the poor behavioural scientists who have to tell him that 'of course the public are going to give you the vs when you tell them you shouldn't do this when your chief advisor claims to be maybe going blind'.

It seems the whole government strategy on managing the virus seems to be falling flat on its face rather sooner than planned cos they stuck Dildo in charge who wouldn't know her Rs from her elbow if it hit her in the face. And we've got Hancock going full on 1984, telling us not to believe the reports that no one can get a test because its all lies - except half the country has either first hand experience of the travesty of Track and Trace or has a close mate who they know is a hell of a lot more reliable than any of these fuckwits when it comes to telling the truth.

Meanwhile in America Bader Ginsburg has managed to die at possibly the most inconvient and dangerous time possible just as the future of democracy in the US is clinging on by its finger nails.

And yes. Money laundering. Haven't we talked about that a lot on these threads. Its almost as if FinCEN was predictable...

Taking back control was always about the elite taking back control from the masses. But if you've managed to keep following all this time, we've been saying that since April 2016 and no one listened then, so why would they start listening now?

Usual excellent piece from the bylines people ...

Pondering on the Kent lorry situation ... (having worked in logistics software), it's worth saying now (just in case the transport equivalent of Dido tries to say "who'd have thunk it ?") that most hauliers are going to set their lorries off towards Kent in anticipation of getting the paperwork sorted before the lorry reaches the border (lets' not play silly games here. That's what it is).

So where will the lorries that haven't received the correct paperwork (presumably not getting the "green" or "amber" signal on the app the government will have in place by April 2021) park up ?

Current speculation is they'll simply stack them around the M25, like planes Grin.

Also notable by no one talking about it: how will passenger traffic negotiate the 7,000 lorries in it's way to get onto a ferry ?

FatCatThinCat · 26/09/2020 13:46

Are truckers allowed to check the app while driving? If not then they'll all need to park up to see if they need to park up or not.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/09/2020 14:03

It's not only Dover;
Hull is another port with large food imports from the EU and plans for lorry parks, inspection posts, additional formalities & checks etc

Probably there are other ports that would also be affected
Also, Gove has not said how many of those 50,000 Customs staff have been recruited and trained so far

Hull's Brexit lorry parks would 'increase risk to public health'

You'd think it could "ping" or change the screen colour ...

However I've worked with drivers and I can tell you all they aren't hired for their "app" skillz.*

I know what the Govesters response is going to be

"We will introduce a law making it an offence to set off without a valid KAP".

Thus bringing the entire UK haulage industry to it's knees.

*One of my projects was to interface with British Steels order system to prevent lorries with the wrong load leaving the stockholders. On average at least 2 lorries a week managed to pick up the wrong order and be hundreds of miles away - if not at the destination - before the cock up was realised. On my first site visit, I asked how that happened since the order numbers were clearly visible. I can't type the reply here Grin

Then of course, there is Holyhead. But in this case, the Irish wagons with which the A55 heaves at times, will probably be replaced by ships which go directly from Irish ports to French/Dutch ports, bypassing the UK altogether.

ListeningQuietly · 26/09/2020 14:28

Portsmouth is a fun one because the docks are so tiny that its only 7 lorries between the ramp and the M275
so if there are delays loading, the M275 is stuffed
if there are delays unloading, the boat cannot turn around

Holyhead : those roundabouts with lorries stacked up on them !!!!
Pembroke : those roundabouts with lorries stacked up on them !!!!

Oh and do not forget Ramsgate - lorries finding back routes around Thanet
perfect

Peregrina · 26/09/2020 14:35

Well, if Gove's knowledge of geography is on a par with Raab's, he won't have a clue about where these places are, and what problems might be presented.

FatCatThinCat · 26/09/2020 14:40

I've just been reading about the port at Immingham, which apparently handles the most freight in the UK. DFDS say they handle 1 unit every 60 seconds. Any delay to this will grid lock port access and the two oil refineries there. So that'll be fun.

FatCatThinCat · 26/09/2020 14:43

Forgot to say, it only takes 71 queuing lorries to gridlock the port.

ListeningQuietly · 26/09/2020 14:47

Fatcat
Different ports have different issues.
Immingham is like Southampton - mostly non EU, all containerised
therefore will be unaffected by a hard Brexit as they are already doing clearance paperwork for almost all of their shipments
and the lorries are not arriving with the containers, they just collect them after they have cleared customs.

Almost no perishables come through those ports
therefore the hurry is not there

FatCatThinCat · 26/09/2020 14:53

The freight ferries from Scandinavia come in to Immingham. I used to use them as a 'foot passenger'.

Sostenueto · 26/09/2020 15:12

Boris Johnson whilst addressing the United Nations referred to conspiracy believers and 'Those nut jobs'. Geez does he have such limited vocabulary to address the United Nations like that ffs! No decoram no statesmanship. Angry

GeistohneGrenzen · 26/09/2020 16:03

Sos that immediately brought to mind the incongruity of Ivanka Trump representing the US at the G20 summit in Germany in 2017 Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 26/09/2020 16:52

Well, maybe it is unwise for a British PM to be rude at the UN about Trump supporters, so near to the US election Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 26/09/2020 17:14

tbh, I thought it was a good speech, miles above any of his previous efforts

He praised the WHO and its efforts, which is really important after Trumpo's attacks;
strongly urged international cooperation - even praised Bill Gates for being Cassandra !

Sounded like a responsible adult, total change to Brexit rantings

Plymouth - passenger and freight from / to France and Spain. I read elsewhere it has been identified as a post transition route for medicine imports.

Trouble in Trafalgar Square today. ‘We do not consent’ crowds protesting the new restrictions. Violence and arrests.

And universities also struggling with how to deliver an education to young people in a way that navigates between safety from Covid and mental health disaster.

SadSadSad

ListeningQuietly · 26/09/2020 17:58

Britain Bites back were in Trafalgar Square with that lot. Says it all.

Universities - yup, a scary time has just had all the excitement ripped out of it.

Peregrina · 26/09/2020 18:18

Who are Britain Bites Back?

I have some sympathy with the protesters - these laws have been rushed through without proper Parliamentary scrutiny (not that would necessarily make any difference with the current make up of Parliament). Then Boris Johnson is making policy on the hoof, while making sure that his cronies get nice fat bungs. So yes, it's time for people to protest.

ListeningQuietly · 26/09/2020 18:28

BBB are on Facebook. They are not a parody. But almost all of their followers are folks like me.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/09/2020 18:32

A lower number of tragedies (I refuse to call this "good" news) Sad

ONS data so far for suicides among the young has significantly lower numbers Q1+Q2, compared to 2019 Q1+Q2,
65 vs 100 suicides for the under 20 age group

Q3 not available yet, presumably due to inquests etc

This fits with recent MH studies, e.g. by the Uni Bristol that found anxiety levels in young teens were lower during lockdown:
sphr.nihr.ac.uk/news-and-events/new-report-shows-young-peoples-mental-health-improved-during-lockdown/

Less academic stress, bullying at school ?
Needs investigating why "normal life" could be more stressful for teens than a damn lockdown

I can tell you one major factor
SLEEP
When mine were in 6th form the alarm went off at 6:30 so they could get the bus.
Since lockdown started I have not set the alarm
so we wake up when our bodies tell us to
and for teenagers that is much later than bus time

pointythings · 26/09/2020 19:27

LQ I agree 100%. All the teens in my household reset their body clocks to what works for them. All of them got their academic work done (1 at Uni, 2 at school, we were lucky to have a school that were proactive about online learning). They all made it work according to their needs. There is much to be learned from this crisis.
