Almost broke my radio this morning. The politics editor was discussing the return of parliament and slid in "of course Labour and the Lib Dems are both led by a Knight of the Realm, and the Conservatives by plain old Mr Boris Johnson, man of the people.

The politics editor is usually very good so if he meant it sarcastically I wouldn't be surprised but his tone did not imply anything other than sincerity. It upsets me that people will believe it.

In other news, DGM is very upset with the Conservatives. She feels the party has changed under the radar and it's not what she wants to support now. She hated JC but "actually quite like Kier Starmer - clever man, works hard". Hopefully there are many more like her across the country.

I'd be placing my evey diminishing hopes at the other end of the demographics. The current 14 year olds who will be 18 in 2024 with a realisation of how their futures were pissed away. I wouldn't blame them if they moved heaven and earth to leave the UK and our generation to find someone else to wipe our arses. Ideally someone from far outside Europe.

It feels worrying subversive to post things I know 80% of MNetters would never see ...

If there’s no deal Brexit we won’t have to wait until 2024 for an election.

I shall look that one up.
THe books about John Harrison and also the Coelacanth are good too

DrBlackbird · 02/09/2020 12:17

@quiteathome

Although that could mean it is never over.
^^ This.

it will never be over... just constant blame of other governments to disguise / divert / displace blame from our current government.

ListeningQuietly · 02/09/2020 12:33

Whitehall JUST DO NOT GET IT
The Kickstart Scheme will only help big businesses Tory Party Donors
so will be deemed a failure by the NAO in due course

Peregrina · 02/09/2020 12:36

Parliament is back and so are PMQs. Starmer asked Johnson when he knew about the exams grading fiasco. Johnson refused to answer, waffle waffle waffle, piffle piffle piffle. Our children deserve better.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 02/09/2020 12:44

LQ just checked your link, and I see that employers have to take on at least 30 young people. That'll go well... Angry

Clavinova · 02/09/2020 12:52

@mathanxiety
Especially the one where you decided to split hairs on the definition of healthcare worker

Amnesty International made the distinction in their report - the report that led to this discussion. What do you think then of the "Daily numbers, graphs, analysis thread" on Mumsnet? I see that BigChoc has started thread number 16 - do you think it's appropriate to be discussing ONS data (deaths) for example?

Leaving aside the racial divide, I think we can safely infer that PPE was in short supply across the board, clearly placing healthcare workers' health and even their lives at risk.

Leaving aside the racial divide?? The primary focus in your link was the racial divide; "Harder for BME nurses to access PPE during Covid-19 crisis, finds survey."

"Fresh light has been shed on the inequalities facing black and ethnic minority nurses during the Covid-19 crisis, with a survey suggesting they have found it harder to get protective equipment (PPE) than their white colleagues." ...

"Across all settings, almost a quarter of BME staff reported having no confidence that their employer was doing enough to adequately protect them from Covid-19. Only 11% of white British staff reported the same concern."

You were so eager to criticise me that you dismissed the concerns in the article out of hand, thereby normalising and minimising the deaths of BME/BAME nurses and other BAME healthcare workers.

ListeningQuietly · 02/09/2020 13:01

Icould
Exactly.
Lots and lots of small companies would love to take on one or two youngsters to replace the older folks who are dropping out of the job market
but the scheme is designed to exclude SMEs
so stupid

Mistigri · 02/09/2020 13:01

When caught out minimising the deaths of human beings because the government failed to protect them, doubling down is probably not the best strategy.

But I suppose someone has to try to deflect attention from PMQs and from Ofqual's committee evidence which is highly damaging to ministers.

Sostenueto · 02/09/2020 13:02

Loved BJ getting wrong off speaker for not answering questions!

MaxNormal · 02/09/2020 13:04

Just popped in to comment after reading the summary of PMQs. What a lazy, lying, useless sack of shit.

Clavinova · 02/09/2020 13:11

I didn't minimise the deaths of human beings - you were gaslighting. And some of you appear to want to call me back every day to expose your own failings. Thank goodness we have left the EU already.

What a lazy, lying, useless sack of shit.

No need to hold back, say what you think Grin

He really pissed Starmer off too. I'd guess that a former DPP is not a great choice of person to really piss off.

I must say that I am coming round to Starmer, who is doing a very good job of letting the CONS dig a series of big holes for themselves.

Very hard to believe that this confederacy of dunces is capable of navigating the complexities of the end of transition.

Clavinova · 02/09/2020 13:35

Mistigri
A few examples of your own hypocrisy;

"One of the big differences in the case and death trajectories in different countries seems to be the extent to which the virus gets into closed or semi-closed communities"

"Fatalities won't peak until some time after the daily increase in cases starts to slow, because this virus often takes weeks to kill."

"you probably have another 3 weeks of exponential growth in case numbers, then another 3-4 weeks after that before death rates start to fall."

"fewer deaths of young people from transport, work and sport related injuries, and fewer deaths of the very old and very young from non-covid infectious illness."

ListeningQuietly · 02/09/2020 13:52

Schools are back
Parliament is back
Workplaces are coming back
The end of Brexit transition is 120 days away

stop bickering about the past
and work out how we'll cope with the future

Mistigri · 02/09/2020 13:57

I'm glad someone went to the considerable trouble of trawling up those old quotes as they have all turned out to be pretty accurate Grin.

Doesn't for one moment mean that I think it's right to minimise the deaths of healthcare workers, who were risking their lives on the front line while most of us were sat on our arses safely at home.

Mistigri · 02/09/2020 14:01

*The end of Brexit transition is 120 days away

It's too late. At a guess 90% of what will happen on 1/1/21 is already baked in. Four months isn't enough to do anything more than a bit of yellowhammer crisis planning. You don't write software or build infrastructure on that timescale.

There are important differences between deal and no deal, but not as far as the largest and most immediate impacts are concerned.

In prep for the end of the year I am stockpiling and sharpening my collection of bladed weapons

and hoping that MPs might see sense around late October
and go for Brexit-lite

TheABC · 02/09/2020 14:10

I think I am at the fifth stage of grief right now; acceptance and disaster planning. CJ Samson and a cupboard of gin seems like a good bet. Plus household stash essentials like flour and loo roll.

Looking at the recent headlines, No-Deal is now the preferred route with the EU being "intransigent". That's Johnson's story and he is sticking with it. I suppose it's better than "the dog ate my homework", but not by much.

I really hope Stamner nails him with the "oven-ready deal", when the consequences hit home.

Do you think the smiley face is appropriate in the circumstances?
