Westministenders: Can you tell your Rs from Elbows?

This week Mark Sedwill has resigned (or was he pushed?) and David Frost (chief brexit lead) was appointed National Security Adviser in a move that enraged Theresa May. The former prime minister felt that his appointment was unprofessional and that was a political appointment not an independent one and that he lacked experience. Of course in terms of national security we still haven't had that report on Russia and I don't believe The Intelligence and Security Committee has yet been named (not sat since Johnson was appointed as PM).

We have passed the deadline for extending transition and we have now apparently said that negotiations on the end of transition will finish at the end of September.

The bill ending Free movement of people has been signed, amongst much fanfare by the Conservatives saying they have delivered on the Referendum promise. However we might have up to 3million Hong Kongers who we are willing to allow into the country which might not go down too well with those who were unhappy with 'unrestricted EU immigration'.

We also have the demonstration of utter incompetence, outsourcing and lack of coordination and communication from central government and local government in the covid-19 crisis. A national scandal that isn't being properly reported by the press and leave you with the very large question of who is this government serving? If its contract with Deloittes over testing didn't require them to report positive tests to Public Health England, what was the point in the testing? How can this be consistent with 'The Government’s new approach to biosecurity will bring together the UK’s world-leading epidemiological expertise and fuse it with the best analytical capability from across Government in an integrated approach.' and will provide real time analysis and assessment of infection outbreaks at a community level, to enable rapid intervention before outbreaks grow.?

The growing feeling that Brexit is being exploited by this government for personal interests and those of big business at the expense of the general public is one which was feared and grows harder to argue against by the day.

Would someone dying lie about attending a COVID party ?
We've even had several MN posters saying they would attend a COVID party !

Of course, most infections are not because of Darwin dealing with gullible fools.

In every country, essential workers and those who can't WFH are at high risk of infection

Severe deprivation is a high risk factor for getting infected
and also for a worse prognosis after infection

In some Southern US states 80-90% of those seiously ill are African Americans,
who are more likely to have jobs that out them at risk,
more likely to have inadequate healthcare and hence to have untreated health conditions

Care homes:
I posted a few threads back that some US care homes in several states are dumping helpless longterm residents on the street,
to make room for more lucrative COVID patients paid a a higher rate by insurance companies

Who on earth would rush to the defence of Cummings' AI pals ? Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 17:06

Defending all the various Bungs for the Boys would keep anyone a very busy poster

Peregrina · 12/07/2020 17:09

I can well believe that there are some Americans who are bat shit crazy enough to go to a Corona virus party. I also think there are some Englishmen who would do so. Now who was it who was bragging about shaking hands with Corona virus patients? Hmm, didn't he go on to catch it himself? And then made the most remarkable recovery on Easter day. Confused Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 17:09

Is Cummings using BJ and Gove to gauge public opinion on masks ?

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jul/12/face-masks-shops-will-not-be-mandatory-england-gove-suggests

Wearing face coverings in shops will not become mandatory in England,
Michael Gove has suggested, sparking confusion over plans to stem the spread of coronavirus as the country emerges from lockdown.

On Friday Boris Johson indicated he was considering making masks compulsory in shops and other enclosed spaces,
but Gove, the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said instead that people could use their common sense.

Yes, my link gives deprivation and medical insurance stats. People, and especially young people still attend parties, but not necessarily COVID parties. There have been street parties in London and Manchester.

Clavinova · 12/07/2020 17:13

Now who was it who was bragging about shaking hands with Corona virus patients?

Not in so many words - the corona virus patients were somewhere in the building.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 17:14

Masks have become polarising in the Uk, but not so openly on party lines,
looks more those for / against the original lockdown

Different in the USA - but with well over 3 million cases, even many prominant Republicans are now advocating masks:

US Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (Republican, Tennessee):

https://www.alexander.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2020/6/chairman-alexander-stakes-are-too-high-for-pro-trump-anti-trump-mask-debate-to-continue

^“the stakes are too high,” for the political debate around wearing masks to continue.

“Unfortunately this simple lifesaving practice has become part of a political debate that says:

If you're for Trump, you don't wear a mask
If you're against Trump, you do,”

“The United States is in the middle of a very concerning rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in many states,
^
and the experts in front of us today have told us that washing our hands, staying apart and wearing a mask

are three of the most important ways to slow the spread of the virus.”

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 17:19

Yes, the vast majority of parties everywhere are just to have fun

There are only a tiny, tiny % of parties in the USA that are COVID / Darwinian,
maybe an extreme Trumper vaiant, instead of drinking the fish tank or glugging bleach

Some MNers have also claimed they would attend COVID parties

  • but posters claim many things - and I haven't heard of any actually happening in the UK
Clavinova · 12/07/2020 17:22

Defending all the various Bungs for the Boys would keep anyone a very busy poster

Sorry, but did you look at the client list?

The BBC, Sky, Siemens, Rolls Royce, British Airways, Deloitte, Dow Jones, Cisco, Tesco, John Lewis, Lloyds Bank, Transport for London, National Rail, Natural History Museum, Amnesty International...

The Guardian are just peddling a conspiracy theory.

JeSuisPoulet · 12/07/2020 17:32

Clav forgive us if we don't buy into us being "fearmongers" any more, we have had rather a lot of that since 2016. Hardly as if the Guardian has won any awards for journalism though, is it? Of course not, compared to the Daily Fail for example Hmm Wakefield has a lot to answer for in the current crisis too IMO.

BCF I do actually think the party lines are similar, as I said yesterday, with authoritarians (ie. people who want rules for others to follow) being least likely to wear them, along with men who have been socially conditioned to believe themselves to be less at risk because of brute strength Hmm. It is really typically short sighted of the Tories not to realise their fan base is going to be in for a kicking, as it is in America, particularly in those areas who are deprived and just turned blue.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 17:34

Contracts for political allies especially should go through the normal purchasing process for govt contracts

That particular firm is not providing a sufficiently unique or emergency service during this crisis to justify avoiding the usual process and checks

Clavinova · 12/07/2020 17:44

BigChocFrenzy

You bought into the conspiracy otherwise you would not have posted;

< that may explain the frequently misleading figures >

DGRossetti · 12/07/2020 17:52

For some reason I am reminded of the preachers who handle venomous snakes to prove their divinity that legend has about in the US bible belt.

Peregrina · 12/07/2020 17:52

You took the bait Clavinova when I said in mock confusion about an Englishman shaking hands with corona virus patients.

Who knows where he was or they were? A certain PM can deny that TV cameras are there when they are filming him.

DGRossetti · 12/07/2020 17:54

A certain PM can deny that TV cameras are there when they are filming him.

Like a shit Obi-Wan Kenobi ...

There are no cameras here ....

Boris Johnson accused of plan to 'emasculate' UK devolution

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/12/boris-johnson-accused-of-plan-emasculate-uk-devolution

Senior figures in Scotland and Wales warn Brexit is bringing a ‘statutory fist crashing down’

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 17:59

"conspiracy theory"

Yes, BJ and Hancock lie about figures - new nurses etc - without needing any help,
but to actually get away with lies is much easier with help from professional liars and psyops

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 18:01

Of course, it's not working
Polly show v low level of trust in what BJ and co say

Eventually all liars get found out

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 18:01

"polly" ?
Well probably she does too Grin

As noted previously, maybe Scottish independence campaigners should ally with English independence campaigners and big up the myth that Scotland is a drain on England. The best way to ensure Scottish independence is to trick make the UKIP brigade think it will hurt them. They'd have it by teatime then.

No-deal Brexit will raise cost of UK household staples, say retailers

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/10/no-deal-brexit-will-raise-cost-of-uk-household-staples-say-retailers

The BRC (British Retail Consortium) has calculated that beef, which is imported in huge quantities from the Republic of Ireland, will go up in price by 48%,
with cheddar cheese, another staple imported from across the Irish Sea, expected to cost 57% more.

Oranges from Spain will cost 12% more,
while the price of cucumbers will rise by 16%.

Trousers imported from Italy will have a 12% levy slapped on them ,
porcelain kitchenware will also go up by 12%
and drinking glasses made in Poland up 10%.

Connolly said it was a misunderstanding to think that retailers and their suppliers had built up “huge Brexit war chests”
and added that Covid-19 had exposed the fragility of the supply chain.

“The ability and bandwidth, both financially and time-wise, of retailers to deal with a no-deal Brexit at the end of this year has been greatly diminished,”

BigChocFrenzy · 12/07/2020 18:12

Well, was it 80% of Leavers who would sacrifice NI for Brexit?

To be fair, some didn't realise NI was part of the UK
whereas surely all must know Scotland is

Would they abandon the UK to have Tory govt in perpetuity for the Kingdom of Wangland (Wales+England) ?

Yes, depends how clever pretty and her chums are in phrasing the argument !

prettybird · 12/07/2020 18:22

Well, I have changed my terminology from rUK which was used during Indyref to mean "the remainder of the UK" and demonstrating a degree of respect Wink, to FUKD - the Formerly United Kingdom and its Dependencies Grinbecause that's what it would be Sad
