“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

Not George Orwell but often attributed to him. But a powerful statement with resonance nonetheless

Anyone else remembering the school photographs with the same pupil each end ?

pussycatinboots · 02/06/2020 16:56

Some MPs fitbits will explode, surely - one way of getting 10,000 steps in.
There must be bits of the Parliamentary estate that they've never seen before!

That's the Eagle Twin.

There's only one of her, I tell you.

DGRossetti · 02/06/2020 16:57

@RedToothBrush

Oh btw, Trump's photo shoot with the bible is VERY concerning.
Fascism crossed the Atlantic wrapped in the Bible and armed with the cross

Whenever I think a farce cannot be topped, this Ship of Fools sails over the edge of the world

The “Mogg conga” makes the "VE Conga" look good

At least the UK Parliament is providing entertainment to the rest of the world
Our greatest comedy export - I hope they charge for the rights

pussycatinboots · 02/06/2020 17:02

Was he the wobbly one with the red face? sorry, it doesn't narrow it down much

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 02/06/2020 17:03

Love the Labour MP with the teenage scowl on her face.

One trespasser who should have been removed with teargas ....

https://news.sky.com/story/george-floyd-death-bishop-outraged-by-trumps-photo-op-outside-church-11999148

The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington has said she is "outraged"
after police officers used tear gas to disperse peaceful protesters from her churchyard for Donald Trump to stage a photo-op outside holding a Bible.
....
Reverend Mariann Budde, whose diocese St. John's belongs to, said she was given no warning about Mr Trump's visit on Monday,

and no permission was sought for the photo opportunity.
The bishop told MSNBC the president was "preceded by a violent clearing of non-violent protesters".

"He was using our church as the backdrop and the Bible as a prop in ways that I found to be deeply offensive".

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2020 17:06

"Is Mike Penning Drunk?"

getting pickled is probably the best option

JamieLeeCurtains · 02/06/2020 17:09

I'm actually a bit stunned by all that, having watched it live.

edition.cnn.com/2020/06/01/uk/boris-johnson-brexit-june-intl-gbr/index.html

Boris Johnson's Brexit nightmare is back at the worst possible moment

London (CNN)June 2020 is set to be one of the most important months in Boris Johnson's somewhat tumultuous first year as Prime Minister.

Mired in a scandal surrounding his chief adviser Dominic Cummings and facing difficult questions about the UK having the highest coronavirus death toll in Europe, Johnson's next month is going to be critical if he is to recapture the authority he had at the start of 2020.

June is also a make or break month in the UK's post-Brexit negotiations with the European Union. Johnson, the architect of Brexit, has made such firm commitments to not extend the transition period that he simply cannot afford any capitulation -- especially with his mounting domestic issues. Weakness is not an option.

(contd)

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2020 17:17

Seeing the chaotic farce they made of MPs voting, does not give confidence in their ability to manage a pandemic

btw, despite the relaxation of measures suggesting the UK was judged to be at level 3 or lower...

Chris Whitty 'vetoed lowering of coronavirus alert level'

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jun/02/chris-whitty-vetoed-lowering-of-coronavirus-alert-level

No 10 says England’s chief medical officer was responsible for keeping it at level four
....
The expectation had been that by the time Monday’s loosened rules came into force, with more businesses opening and groups of up to six people allowed to meet outside,
the five-point alert system would have been reduced from four, which means coronavirus transmission “is high or rising exponentially”, to three, where the virus is only “in general circulation”.

However, the level stayed the same, with ministers sayingg* it was “transitioning from level four to level three”. Confused

Do we know if there's another Conga tonight?

HoneysuckIejasmine · 02/06/2020 17:37

@RedToothBrush

Hannah White *@DrHannahWhite* The government has taken a fully functioning digital voting system which took 15mins per vote in which all MPs could participate and replaced it with a queuing system taking 45mins per vote in which only 2/3 of MPs can participate. Not a great advert for government effectiveness.
This, DGR, is exactly what I mean by archaic. Clinging to pointless traditions, which seem designed with the sole purpose of impeding democracy. Yes, some might argue that's entirely the point, which is why I find it embarrassing. Why do you have to be so prickly all the time?

Local radio politics coverage are describing it as ludicrous chaos. Sounds right.

Who was the scowler? Mockers possibly Rachael Maskell?

DGRossetti · 02/06/2020 17:39

This, DGR, is exactly what I mean by archaic. Clinging to pointless traditions, which seem designed with the sole purpose of impeding democracy.

I get very nervous when anything is suggested as "improving" democracy. Voter ID springs to mind.

QuestionMarkNow · 02/06/2020 17:46

Johnson, the architect of Brexit, has made such firm commitments to not extend the transition period that he simply cannot afford any capitulation -- especially with his mounting domestic issues. Weakness is not an option.

Which means we will end up with a NO Deal Brexit by default.
Even though I am sure that the population as a whole wouod actually accept that things have changed and that dealing with Covid + Brexit at the same time isnt a great idea at all. Maybe this will be come even more obvious when furlough will dwingle and the true reality of redundancies will hit.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2020 17:49

The EU have several times suggested an extension, but the Uk have always refused.

QuestionMarkNow · 02/06/2020 17:49

But a supporter of Jacob Rees-Mogg defends the system. “Don’t let anyone decry this. It is working. We have expected the rest of the country to queue up for months. So why shouldn’t we queue?”

Maybe, just maybe, because the rest of the country has been told to learn to work from home as much as possible, and is still expected to so. So why can't MPs also learn to be working online like the rest of the population??? And why can't the government be expected to adjust to have most its MPs working from home like most companies have had to learn to have their employees wprking from home too???

Again, one rule for us, one rule for them. In whatever way suits.

DGRossetti · 02/06/2020 17:50

Even though I am sure that the population as a whole wouod actually accept that things have changed and that dealing with Covid + Brexit at the same time isnt a great idea at all

I don't think many people have twigged yet that what the population may or may not want has fuck all to do with Brexit and never has. Brexit is the vanity project of the 1%.

There were a myriad of ways to address any problems with the EU and the UKs relationship inside the EU. If people had used even the tiniest bit of brain power they should have smelled a rat that the only one being put forward was "Brexit".

RedToothBrush · 02/06/2020 18:06

What is the right to bare arms all about?

Is it against the tyranny of the state and the idea of taxation without representation?

Cos the US is rapidly headed for civil war. The Bible photo op is all about that.

Trump knows he can't win reelection fairly now. So he will make it dangerous for 'the wrong' people to vote at best.

It's very very dangerous and scary.

Just as we decide that making the US our primary trading partner is a good idea....
