Westminstenders: Magical Thinking

This week has seen reports of the government editing footage of Johnson to avoid embarrassing questions about the early government response.

We've been asked to accept that the rules were different to what we were told to excuse the law breaking behaviour of a senior government advisor. As Johnson said he was being a responsible father (as if Johnson knows what this is) and it wasn't as if he was visiting a lover (this Johnson would know all about). Let's be honest Johnson is the master of brazening out controversy.

We also have the ERG complaining they were lied to by Gove about the new Withdrawal Agreement and the border in the Irish Sea which surprises precisely no one else.

They appear to be a little upset by the Cummings debarkable too.

For those who haven't yet paid the fine, surely the approach is to refuse and be prepared to stand up in court, and say that you were just following parental instincts? The same way that Poll tax refusers stood up in court. Or they did things like went to the council office to pay in pennies. I am not sure if that would work - but either way, be a maximum nuisance while keeping within the law.

Peregrina · 26/05/2020 18:45

DGR are you saying that Cumming's wife had an affair with BoJo, and passed the child off as Dom's?

DGRossetti · 26/05/2020 18:46

Imagine a police officer pounding the beat, who comes across someone from a BAME background possibly breaking the regulations.

Now imagine that police officer trying to enforce the regulations.

Now imagine that police officer being accused of racism, since nice middle class, beige Cummings gets away with it.

Now imagine that police officer either backing down, or doubling down and calling in the troops.

Now imagine it's a hot May night and tempers are already frayed . ...

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2020 18:47

"Which is why I said, any cabinet minster is totally safe forever now."

Um, no, because they won't have this hold over him

If you mean BJ wouldn't have the gall to be so uneven-handed .... 😂

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2020 18:51

BJ can still get away with almost anything, umless the polls crash down and stay there for more than a 7-day wonder

btw, that story about BJ allegedly giving permission to someone else to marry his pregnant ex-GF and bring up his child

  • was not Cummings and didn't cause a ripple when it was printed
BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2020 18:52

Not just BAME ...

Police say Dominic Cummings controversy will make lockdown impossible to enforce

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/24/revealed-police-spoke-dominic-cummings-father-twice-260-mile/

Senior figures fear that lockdown policing is 'dead in the water' and that
the public will rely on the 'Cummings defence' when challenged

Peregrina · 26/05/2020 18:57

As I found out today, people will still distance themselves but it will be done because they feel a sense of obligation to their fellow men and women. It won't be because Johnson has decreed it.

It seemed abundantly clear to me that you followed your instincts as to which laws you choose to obey now.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2020 19:10

Even the loathsome Philip Davies, MRA for Shipley has called on Cummings to “do the honourable thing and resign”

Imagine being lectured by Davies on being honourable

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2020 19:20

YouGov: On whether Dominic Cummings should or should not resign from his job as advisor to the Prime Minister:

Should resign: 59%
Should not resign: 27%
DK: 14%

OK - press him on our high death rate. Ask him which laws he thinks should be treated as discretionary. Make the man work for his money.

I have to pay a fine (correctly issued). I will write a letter tonight to explain why I was merely following my parental instincts and why they should contact my MP instead who can explain why it’s important to forgive people like me.

Sostenueto · 26/05/2020 19:42

Durham police just announced they have begun an investigation into alleged breach of lockdown after further information over the weekend and are investigating that information.... Sky news.

MagisCapulus · 26/05/2020 19:43

Peregrina, I have PM you

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 26/05/2020 19:48

16.00 Wednesday, Liason Ctee finally get to quiz BJ about Life, The Universe and Everything. All those senior Tory MPs passed over for cabinet posts. Should be good.

Nquartz · 26/05/2020 19:51

@MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing will we hear any outputs from the meeting? I'd love to be a fly on the wall Grin

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 26/05/2020 20:01

It'll be live on the parliament channel and on the website.

Tanith · 26/05/2020 20:08

I see Jeremy Hunt has said that was a clear breach of lockdown rules, but that he won't be joining the call for him to resign.

Keeping his powder dry.

DrBlackbird · 26/05/2020 20:16

I've now decided that more than DC having 'something' on BJ, the plain and simple reason for Johnson's continued defence stems from how no one, but no one, will tell him what to do. The more anyone tries to tell him to get rid of Cummings, the more he'll dig his heels in. Gone is the buffoon class clown mask to reveal the ruthless FU politician.

MagisCapulus · 26/05/2020 20:16

Luckily most people do have a sense of obligation to their fellow humans. unlike certain politicians
borntobequiet · 26/05/2020 20:47

Just got an email response from my MP, the first ever - she normally does proper letters (that blather on about not very much). Says overwhelmed with correspondence and DC should go. Quite the turn around from her, very Brexity constituency but very rule compliant. But I never got the impression she was happy with BJ at all, as I remember she supported Jeremy Hunt for the leadership.

DrBlackbird · 26/05/2020 20:48

Here is Marina Hyde articulating beautifully what I was trying to say... All populists secretly hate their people, and Johnson is no different. But that “secretly” is key. His decision to keep Cummings brings his contempt for those he is meant to serve into the open.

@MagisCapulus, how did you quote a poster like that?
