We are witnessing a demonstration in Government crisis management.

For the past week journalists have asked the same questions and politicians have said they've already done it / are doing it in the near future. But as time wears on, the inability to produce the answers or demonstrate results is proving illusive.

This will have consequences.

It is a demonstration in how planning has proved to be lacking in certain areas.

With Brexit in mind, the lack of vision, coordination with business and wider capability and capacity this does not bode well.

From what I gather, the Italian govt hasn't given adequate financial support, so a few people have resorted to invading supermarkets, to feed their families

What is happening in Italy is that cash-in-hand work is endemic, especially in the south. I am not talking about your man-and-a-van emptying your backyard of rubbish...I know of hairdressers and restaurants that only pay national insurance for half of their staff..I even know a few IT consultants that are paid cash-in-hand.

Now none of these people are eligible for government support, because their jobs have never officially existed. So this is not a problem with the government scheme per-se, but yet another case of chicken coming home to roost.

OK, useful info, Glass
The Black Economy disappearing up its own fundament for a while

The Italian press reported with incredulity the herd immunity theory.

There were press reports of sick Italians in the U.K. who reported symptoms and no one bothered to test anyone. This includes one who died and his death was botched up to something else and his family were never tested.

The fact that Boris is in ICU was reported the morning after he went to hospital, hours before it was announced in the U.K.

Now it’s reporting on the spiralling death toll.

I tend to read Repubblica and Italy’s version of the FT, so generally reliable press and not scandalmongers. The was some other stuff in the Huff post but it was a bit OTT do I ignored it. There is nothing if the hysterical tone of the U.K. press on the whole. I found a lot of the reporting was over egging and playing to stereotypes. Guardian included. The stories about raiding supermarkets were hyped out of all proportion, for eg.

Melassa · 08/04/2020 15:27

That was to @Piggywaspushed

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2020 15:28

Interesting. Thanks.

Apart from asking "Who is in charge in the UK ?" ( Chi comanda a Downing Street ? ) , the only other story I picked up on a newsfeed was about our 4th nuclear submarine, for some reason ... excerpt posted for the polyglots ...

BigChocFrenzy · 08/04/2020 15:32

Melassa Maybe give a headsup here if the more reliable Italian media reports that BJ has gone on a ventilator, or worse,
if the Uk news release of that is delayed

BigChocFrenzy · 08/04/2020 15:36

Do those aircraft carriers now have planes we don't have to return if Trump wants them ?
Or if the NHS refuses to use BJ as a guinea pig
(a scenario which would cause me to leap in vehement defence of BJ's human rights Hmm)

Melassa · 08/04/2020 15:38

Will do, let me see if I can dig up some of the reports from the past days.

The Boris in ICU story was on Rainews iirc, which is the Italian version of the BBC. Not sure if that’s a good comparison or not these days!

DGRossetti · 08/04/2020 15:39

Anyone remember that "Yes Prime Minister" episode when the Prime Minster was better informed that the foreign secretary "Because you've got the TV" ?

I think the people with the most up to date info about Boris will be writing in Russian ...

Melassa · 08/04/2020 15:49

in the meantime a piece on one of the doctors treating Boris

Apparently he’ll be out of action for weeks

Melassa · 08/04/2020 15:49

DGR can translate, I’m supposed to be in a conference call Blush

DadDadDad · 08/04/2020 16:06

Google translate turned that into English for me and didn't seem to do too bad a job - it largely made sense - although, from context, I'm guessing "fan" was its mistranslation of ventilator.

Anyway, implying BJ will need weeks to recover.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2020 16:14

That's actually in the British press today as well.

Melassa · 08/04/2020 16:16

Sorry to dump and run, I suddenly got asked a question and had to pay attention!

Yes, ventilatore also means fan in Italian

DGRossetti · 08/04/2020 16:28

DGR can translate

You flatter me ... basically it's more a puff piece for Luigi Camporota .. You really have to switch minds to read prose like that, it's very ... quaint. Fans of Montalbano will be fascinated to realise that: yes, they really do speak like that Grin

Anyway, TL;DR - the prognosis for someone in Boris' position is recovery takes a long time. So if he is, as my DS would say "begging it" then he's going to have to be absent from our screens, if not our lives and letterboxes, for a few weeks.

DGRossetti · 08/04/2020 16:29

More detail observant people than me might notice the governments new list of shortage professions have changed

www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-appendix-k-shortage-occupation-list

Seems like it would have been simpler to list the skills we don't need. Or maybe just have FOM to keep it simpler?

DGRossetti · 08/04/2020 16:37

More detail observant people than me might notice the governments paymasters new list of shortage professions have changed

fixed that for you ...

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2020 16:39

That's a fascinating list! We have a shortage if artists, trained classical musicians and secondary Mandarin teachers??

Peregrina · 08/04/2020 16:42

So if he is, as my DS would say "begging it" then he's going to have to be absent from our screens, if not our lives and letterboxes, for a few weeks.

I hope so. I hope he takes as long as it needs to get better, and meanwhile let someone else lead the country.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/04/2020 16:45

No wonder Trump is so cross with this virus "hoax"
He and his allies want to restart the economy

  • because he's lost a billion with the shutdown !

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/07/donald-trump-lost-1bn-in-a-month-from-coronavirus-lockdown

Trump lost an estimated $1bn of his paper fortune in the past month as the coronavirus lockdown forced the closure of offices, shopping centres, hotels and golf courses he owns.

Peregrina · 08/04/2020 16:48

It's a slightly strange list - we need classical ballet dancers, for example. I am not sure why when all entertainment is shut down.
