For those of us quietly sad about leaving the EU.

I'm not making a song and dance about it. I'm not falling out with anyone over it. I dont want to debate it. I'm just sad about it.

And that's ok.

Anyone else with me?

deadsouls you are totally right. 10 years ago there was a huge poll on what worried people. Only 2% ticked Europe as what worried them. Yes 6% ticked immigration, but only 2% found Europe a concern. So that was people's opinions then...
Spin and lies have got us where we are now. No one cared about Europe then, it wasn't on their radar. If the very close vote had gone the other way, I doubt very much those in Parliament Square last night would have put up such huge resistance to leave, as us Remainers have to stay.

In a slightly comical note... every single interview of anyone celebrating and being asked what it means to them... well... I don't wish to insult or be rude, but let's just say, not one person could put into words what it meant to them and how it would benefit the country. I wanted to hear from small business owners, from exporters, from someone who works in the car plants, anyone... who could say 'yes, it will be great because...'

Yesterday I was very sad, today starts the fight back for me - for the sake of my children and my children's children. I do believe this isn't the end. Nothing will change in my lifetime because I'm old. But it will change in decades to come.

shortsaint · 01/02/2020 08:54

Always remember. This was NOT a national issue. It was a Conservative Party issue. David Cameron should have put the vote to his members not the country. THAT was the moment it became a national issue.

He put a domestic issue on the national agenda for his own political expediency and for that I will never forgive him.

I am past anger. But still sad. Not sure I will reach the acceptance stage.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/02/2020 08:57

I may reach the acceptance stage if it all goes well.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/02/2020 09:02

It seems to be a feeling for a lot of Brexitters. Freedom, ability to do stuff on our own, etc. At least that was the impression I got from the interviews. More the feelings than practicalities.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 01/02/2020 09:07

I am quietly devastated.
I live in the EU, I know a lot of British immigrants here who have a lot to lose. There are a lot of people here, and at home who are seriously concerned. It made me sad to see so many celebrating last night Sad I wondered what they have really ‘won’.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 01/02/2020 09:43

Please can you explain what you are actually sad about

As well as freedom of movement, we also had the EU paying for projects to regenerate poor areas of the country because our own government ignored them.

Being a member of the EU brought us workers rights and employment rights that a right wing conservative government will do its best to destroy. Health and safety legislation that saved lives.

It brought us frictionless trade, part of the biggest customs union and single market.

We've lost far more than we will ever gain.

It’s exactly this

When I asked my bigoted leaver FIL what would be better in my life and the lives of his DGC by leaving, he said remainers were thick as they don’t understand it’s not about logic, it’s about that feeling of sovereignty and taking back control. DC propaganda. FIL is educated but old and won’t see the consequences

Songsofexperience · 01/02/2020 09:48

Put simply, we have NO IDEA how the country will function at the most basic level. That's not great.
There's nothing tangible. It's just pure nationalism.

MysteryTripAgain · 01/02/2020 09:48

Doesn’t change fact that UK wanted to leave the EU. Leave won in 2016 and 2019. See the turnout in Parliament square last night?

Longwhiskers14 · 01/02/2020 09:48

I'm not quietly sad, I'm loudly furious. I don't want to live isolated on an inward-looking island that treats foreigners like lepers.

You can leave the UK any time you wish

ElloBrian · 01/02/2020 09:50

Well, here we are on the first day of a new era and I await with great interest to see what the Brexiters are going to do with it. It’s their time now - time to deliver. They’ve won the train set, time to get on with it. Let’s see, shall we.

Whatever the outcome it affects you too

And where have we heard that before?Hmm

MysteryTripAgain · 01/02/2020 09:53

And where have we heard that before?hmm

So get on with it

LizzieSiddal · 01/02/2020 09:53

FFS

Remainers are very aware of that and it's why they voted to remain!

Disgraceful answer mystery. Dissenters have a voice thankfully in our great british democracy. Her opinion offends you? Learn to deal with it rather than telling her to leave.

Longwhiskers14 · 01/02/2020 09:54

MysteryTripAgain

I know I can.

LizzieSiddal · 01/02/2020 09:54

I'm not interacting with the GF.

Loser consent = Democracy

dwum · 01/02/2020 09:55

@MysteryTripAgain I did. It still affects me as a British Citizen, because my rights have been reduced.

I just can't grasp why people can't understand that citizenship isn't something you can just exchange willynilly if it doesn't suit you. It isn't a matching handbag.

That is just an incredibly unhelpful, insightful and ridiculous comment, which reflects more about the people who say it than those it is said too.

MysteryTripAgain · 01/02/2020 09:56

Remainers are very aware of that and it's why they voted to remain

But the UK left last night at 11pm. So start packing if you don’t like democracy.

TeddyIsaHe · 01/02/2020 09:56

Talk about stating the obvious. Why’d you think we’ve been campaigning so hard against it for 3 years?! To protect the people who can’t give a clear answer as to why it’s a good thing from themselves.

Songsofexperience · 01/02/2020 09:57

I know leavers love that 17 million fuck offs song... There's one coming up in which 16 million answer Grow The Fuck Up.
If one thing really gets me today it's the realisation that LEAVERS like mystery don't want to move on from 2016. They don't want to engage with the real world so the Pavlovian reflex is to tell anyone who disagrees to leave the UK.
They do not own this island. They have no right to talk that way.
Rant over.

FenellaMaxwell · 01/02/2020 09:57

Ok day one of being out. How exciting - they must finally be going to tell us what the plan is....!?!
