Our final week in the EU...

Is it just me or has there been an explosion in posters (some of whom claim to be Remainers) with a narrative approximately like this:

Since this is also the official line of the unofficial spokespeople for the govt (Hannan, kuennssberg et al) you can probably assume that they are being paid to post this on social media. I think the winners know very well that they haven't won.

TheElementsOdeToJoy · 01/02/2020 19:27

they are being paid to post this on social media.

Yes, there's a fuckton of this pukeworthy, cowardly, weasel-worded, blame-shucking stuff all over Twitter too. I figured it had to be a concerted campaign for "getting excuses in early."

Mistigri · 01/02/2020 19:49

Obviously not saying that all of this is fake. But there's a profile that is instantly recognisable: recent accounts or ones with not much posting history, which spout today's official line even when they had recently been promoting a different one (old-timers will recall the "we want to be just like Norway... no, Switzerland ... actually, Iceland ... OK, maybe Albania" arguments of the pre-ref Mumsnet shills). They all use the same arguments, hunt in packs, post in huge volumes then disappear.

SpecLosers · 01/02/2020 19:56

Let us remember Red Tooth Brush. I think s/he started this convo back in the day, but I could be wrong.

I do hope someone, some day will collate all these threads for historical purposes. Future historians will be very interested.

But it is not over yet either!

SwedishEdith · 01/02/2020 20:15

Yes, there's been a spate of the usual suspects (Spectator writers) saying Brexit happening is because of Remainers - the people who voted against and don't support it Hmm. The general response seeming to be that there's a bit of fear about having to own this now - no more scapegoats.

But re the bots (not noticed/looked to see if on mn - mn is notoriously bad at dealing with them. Wilful or naive? Not sure) here's one exchange I was reading on Gibraltar:

Captain Haddock
@JXB101

Brexit trade talks: EU to back Spain over Gibraltar claims
3rd country means 3rd country and all that
Johnson owns this all now
Brexit trade talks: EU to back Spain over Gibraltar claims
Territory’s economy at risk unless UK reaches agreement with Madrid over ownership

You are talking as though the people living there have no right to choose. They can join Spain or stay as part of the UK. No one can decide that issue for them. Spain is not a great Country. I never holiday there as they treat animals too badly.

Sure they can make that decision. Who said otherwise? Doesn’t mean EU has to allow Gib into a trade deal however.

Yes it does. Gib is part of the UK. Trade deals are for all the UK. To try to bully anything else proves why we wanted to leave this fascist control freak, dying trade block.

It isn’t part of the U.K.

Yes it is. That is why they voted in the EU referendum. I would be fine letting them choose if they wish to stay in the EU and join Spain. Its not Britain. That is this Island. The people should be asked and respected. Now chill out Haddock

It isn’t. It’s a British Overseas Territory. They voted in EU Ref due to way Gib included in EU.

Its part of the UK family. No answer, why is France not wanting Jersey ? They do not want to ruled by Spain, so if they try to EU or not, its an invasion. It will be treated as such and the EU are showing their true colours. again. THANK GOD WE LEFT.

Lol. Jersey has never been part of France.

Sense of humour fail by the Brexiters

yoikes · 01/02/2020 20:23

The only good thing about this clusterfuck is that brexiters have to own it.

No one else to blame now.....

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/02/2020 20:26

But they’re off the coast of France, Swedish. It’s virtually the same thing. Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 20:44

DG I hope that was a spoof notice you posted about forbidding foreign languages to be spoken.
If someone genuinely circulated that to residents, has it been reported to the police ?

Interesting that the block is reserved for the 55+ age group

my Gammon for supper tonight was delicious

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 20:49

That's grim

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 20:50

Not your supper !
I mean the notices
I wonder if we'll get another surge in hate crime like after the referendum, or if this is just a nasty one-off

ListeningQuietly · 01/02/2020 21:01

Lol, I knew what you meant

and yes I greatly fear a HUGE upsurge in racism / xenophobia over the coming months

the gammons have been told they won
and are about to realise that last night was meaningless

and as the reality of the trade deal starts to trickle down they will get angrier than they have been

and we will be standing, hands on hips, saying this is what you voted for

PeninsulaPanic · 01/02/2020 21:01

Oh God, when I said "here" I meant in the UK, not in Westminstenders! 😲

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 21:07

We knew what you meant Grin

PeninsulaPanic · 01/02/2020 21:11

@BCF 💕

AuldAlliance · 01/02/2020 21:15

You're fine, Peninsula.
I was recently told on MN that I was 'othering' (and not entitled to an opinion on Brexit) because I used 'there' to refer to the UK, since I now live elsewhere.
Your post was crystal clear. From 'here', anyway. Wink

Lemonrasberrycake · 01/02/2020 21:29

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-51341735

"Happy Brexit Day" notices telling residents "we do not tolerate" people speaking languages other than English have been posted at a block of flats.

Horrible Sad

SpecLosers · 01/02/2020 21:30

We have a long time to go, even though the clock is ticking.

Kudos to all like RTB and BTF. And so many others over the years.

SpecLosers · 01/02/2020 21:32

Sorry BCF.

derxa · 01/02/2020 22:08

We are still Europeans Yes we are. Feeling very flat today Sad

ContinuityError · 01/02/2020 22:46

If Horrible Histories really wanted to do a Brexit spoof they could start with Henry VIII telling the Pope to do one and forcing Brave Old England (and Wales) to Go It Alone.

ContinuityError · 01/02/2020 22:57

Ah, the Blame Game is starting ...

My mum will not stop trolling Andrea Jenkins as long as long as she lives. She went into Morley and stuck it up last night - whilst the pro brexit street party was still going on. Then she joined the flag mafia in the early hours of the morning.
