Isn't that a bit like how the arguments go in Plato's "Republic"?

They might be ... my Greek is much poorer than my Roman when it comes to history and literature. (Being hit over the head with The Aeneid must be the reason).

Michael Wood (historian, TV presenter and possibly known to some of this parish Wink) did a wonderful 3-part series on the Ancient Greeks for BBC4/Open Uni. Which I thoroughly enjoyed watching, although I can't help but feel I must have missed some bits.

Still, I'm sure after 2,500 years, there will be a free copy for my Kindle somewhere Grin. I'll file it in alongside De bello Gallico ....

Odd to think that off all the threads on MN, this is probably the one Boris would feel most at home on ....

Someone sold them a spray-painted turd and told them it was a gold brick. They're angry with anyone who points this out.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 04/02/2020 16:37

Good. I'm pointing it out every single day to my Brexit relatives.

Is Socrates' dialectics not based on allowing someone to express their (erroneous) beliefs, then refuting them without necessarily providing correct answers, merely demonstrating error?
Dim, distant memories.
Elenchus??

God, I like to think BJ would not feel at home on here for long; most of us would make sure of that.

There's a pub not far off where they'd welcome him with open arms, though, and offer respite from all those annoying journalists and people who want to, you know, ask him questions, get actual answers and hold him to account for his lies.

It might be Socrates - we did it in school, in translation, but school was a long long time ago for me.

Snigger

TheSultanofPingu · 04/02/2020 18:57

I think the pub's been closed down Auld

ListeningQuietly · 04/02/2020 19:06

Pingu
The pub is alive and well on the politics board
it echos a lot and seems very angry
but its still there

AuldAlliance · 04/02/2020 19:16

It's alive and trying to kick.
But the people it would most like to kick have the wisdom not to frequent it.

TheSultanofPingu · 04/02/2020 19:18

The Westminster arms has now gone the way of the Brexit arms. It's now the Politics arms Smile

AuldAlliance · 04/02/2020 19:22

It's like Orwellian Newspeak. So many name changes, so few other changes.

mathanxiety · 05/02/2020 05:38

DGR pipped me to the 'Ghost Town' reference.
