The Telegraph is such an abysmal rag

Icantreachthepretzels · 01/02/2020 23:06

Also that horrible histories song is from the first season with the original cast (as is obvious by the presence of the one and only Mat Baynton - and Sarah Hadland being Victoria rather than Martha Howe Douglas). That season is from 2008. It's a 12 year old song Andrew Neil is getting pissy about. Wanker.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 23:35

BJ is the one attempting to renege - on the Ni frontstop !

ContinuityError · 01/02/2020 23:36

Icantreachthepretzels

Your mum is a legend.

Maybe worth reminding Andrea Jenkyns that her DH’s constituency might be a bit fucked if Airbus pull out?

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 23:42

I'll ignore BJ's bluster and go to the EU info, which was prepared in advance as usual:

The European Union and the United Kingdom – forging a new partnership

Has links for the deal they want to negotiate and also for No Deal

Lonelycrab · 01/02/2020 23:44

Had some truly grim adverts on YouTube tonight, just in slots in a mixtape.

“Are you prepared for the future and your financial outlook in the times we live in?” or some such bolloocks. And another one asking if “I’d ever considered investing and being a stock market play-ahh?” ie more such bollocks.

Maybe it’s because I’m skint but I’ve not seen ads like this before. Orwell, here we come!

SwedishEdith · 01/02/2020 23:44

Creepy.

The Telegraph
@Telegraph
'You know, not only did we have a role in shaping the euroscepticism debate, one of our columnists has now become Prime Minister. So our role in all this is significant.'

SwedishEdith · 01/02/2020 23:47

Oops. Not going quite so well for the Telegraph now.

Europe Elects
@EuropeElects

Poland, Kantar poll:

European Union membership referendum

Remain: 94% (+6)
Leave: 6% (-6)

(5% don’t knows excluded)

+/- vs. 21-22 December 2017

Fieldwork: 29-30 January 2020
Sample Size: 1,000

thecatfromjapan · 02/02/2020 00:50

Hello All.

I'm dropping in to moan.

I posed a question in the Keir Starmer thread but I'm kind of regretting it now.

This story - about Karie Murphy (nominated for a peerage for her storming work running Labour's GE campaign,) getting a worker and pinning them up against the wall by the neck ...

https://m.huffingtonpost.co.uk/amp/entry/corbyn-aide-karie-murphy-unfit-for-peerage-bullyingukk5e35a31ac5b69a19a4b018dc/?twitterrimpression=true

The thing is ... this won't have been an isolated incident, and talk will have spread.

And the campaign was insane, with Murphy telling staff and MPs she wasn't interested in polls, and sending resources to Corbynite constituencies, rather than non-Corbynite marginals, and the EHRC report still pending ...

... Starmer knew and colluded.

And really, by rights, he needs to be asked about it.

It's all still so crazy and dysfunctional.

CLPs are still being held hostage by people who do not believe that the purpose of the Party is to get into government and are still pressuring to get policies in place that are developed 'to bring down the state'.

That's deranged.

And Starmer knows this.

And the silence is because he needs to continue to appease these people.

It's actually a crazy state of affairs.

Our politics is such an incredible mess.

🤦‍♀️

PeninsulaPanic · 02/02/2020 00:52

@AuldAlliance

How hypocritical, since we're in this mess because Leavers have blatantly othered 27 countries! And are desperate to ally themselves culturally and economically with the biggest otherers on the planet Confused

Thanks for the reassurance. Hope you're OK 'there' Wink

SwedishEdith · 02/02/2020 01:29

I don't know the ins and out and Corbyn's campaign bores me (I wish I never had to hear from him ever again) but, if not Starmer, who? That's swerving your point but is that not really where Labour are?

thecatfromjapan · 02/02/2020 01:33

You're right, SwedishEdith.

I'm just cross.

I'm so so fed up with Labour at the moment.

Actually, I'm just so so fed up with U.K. politics at the moment.

thecatfromjapan · 02/02/2020 01:33

And I have no chocolate in the house with which to cheer myself up.

The thread about the "Queens English" posters in the housing block is a thing of predictable wonder. As soon as I saw the first post yesterday , I had a script worked out in my head and it's played out pretty much as I expected.

  • First responses from Leavers all "FAKE NEWS"
  • Then a period of silence when people start posting links to news sites reporting it, whilst the defence force is activated
  • Then a prolific set of posts from somebody who says they've experienced racism and coped fine, therefore everybody else should cope fine too unless they're snowflakes
  • This, despite being a massive all-about-me tangential derail of the thread topic, receives enthusiastic support from Leavers
  • There's an intermittent flurry of "Look over there! Squirrel!" posts
  • And then the money shot we've all been building up to... the entire thing was a setup done by Remainers because, well, Hmm
Danetobe · 02/02/2020 08:26

Hi, sorry I rarely post because I don't feel I have much worth saying that is important enough to warrant a post on this weighty thread.

However I would like those that for those of us living in the EU things have changed. I was in copenhagen meeting with some swedish work friends who had just come on the train from sweden and who said that the brits on the train were stopped at the boarder and taken off the train to check their paperwork. Those without were presumably turned around back to sweden.

Sorry its just a small thing but I want to counter the narrative of the UK press that 'nothing will change till jan 2021'. For us, things have changed.

Songsofexperience · 02/02/2020 08:33

As far as I know Danish border officials had no right to send them back. I don't know about the legality of checking paperwork (I presume that's fine) but not denying entry.

Mistigri · 02/02/2020 08:38

What if they weren't carrying passports to prove they were legally entitled to circulate in the Schengen area?

Danetobe · 02/02/2020 08:47

If you live in Denmark as a Brit you have to carry residency paperwork in order to enter now. I assume they were checking all brit residents had valid paperwork, and all tourists were genuine tourists. I don't know how they are checking frontier workers.

yoikes · 02/02/2020 09:01

Absolutely agree catfromjapan

I haven't posted on that starmer webchat thread...what's the point??

He will just trot out the party line TWAW whether he believes it or not.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 02/02/2020 09:04

It's not beyond the realms of possibilities that some officials will be awkward to express their displeasure at the impact of brexit. Nothing should change yet but there's always going to be some who make things difficult.

squid4 · 02/02/2020 09:15

@TheElementsOdeToJoy It's so grim.

Same pattern happened with that story about the young lad on the floor in A&E pre-election. "It's fake." Hospital confirms it. "Mother is a labour activist" Mother says she is normally a tory voter. "OH LOOK A LABOUR ACTIVIST HAS ASSAULTED A TORY OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL!" (The BBC said that! At this point I cancelled my license) Video evidence shows he didn't.

But despite all the evidence, most people believed some of the lies because... most people don't follow this evil whirlwind of misinformation closely enough -and I don't blame them - who has the time, it's exhausting.

I think this was one of the first posting of the poster on twitter and almost every other comment is "I bet a remainer made this up". Deny, deny, deny. The racists have been let out the fucking box

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 02/02/2020 09:16

According to some of the leavers, they are now remainers as they want to remain in the free and independent UK, and remainers are now leavers as we want to rejoin the EU. Sums up the mentality really.

Songsofexperience · 02/02/2020 09:25

That's truly priceless bercow

RedToothBrush · 02/02/2020 10:49

David Henig @davidheniguk
The Number 10 brief is no alignment, no concessions, no ECJ, and we want exactly the same deal as the EU gave to Canada. Also that the EU offered this then took it away. On this basis no deal (and also probably no deal with the US) and serious economic damage. Let's unpack... 1/

The fair challenge to the EU is that they suggested the exact Canada agreement could be on offer. But as I wrote 8 months ago, it was only ever going to be available accompanied by rigid level playing field rules. The UK chose to ignore this 2/
ecipe.org/blog/isolation-or-integration-eu-fta-brexit/

The EU could retort that Canada / CETA took years to negotiate and does not remove all tariffs. It includes some alignment. There are level playing field clauses. The UK government have set a timescale that doesn't work for this. ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/MEMO_16_445 3/
