Feeling so sad tonight here in Ireland. Wishing you all the best but hoping to you'll be back some day. Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2020 22:52

Oops, must always correct wrong facts on Westministenders
Joan Baez actually sang "we shall overcome" before Woodstock 1969, but Woodstock was the first occasion BigChoc in pigtails noticed her singing.

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2020 22:53

Belinda!

That makes me smile.

Sending you all love. Cried at Auld Lang Syne in the EP. It's so sad.

On a lighter note, congrats on your retirement BCF. I wish you many years of enjoying yourself in whatever way you do that best.

I have kept my head away from the news as much as possible though DH has Sky News on (have completely given up on the BBC) every morning so I do get most of it. It's too disheartening to engage. Agree BJ and Co have no plan. But it makes me worry about what will fill the vacuum. DH showed me some utter plonkers burning the EU flag earlier on Twitter. Where does this hate come from? Though NF stated his hatred plainly the other day too.

You know what? It was fucking brilliant when the UK and Ireland were both in the EU.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 31/01/2020 23:03

Forgot I told the robot to play ode to joy at 11pm

HoneysuckIejasmine · 31/01/2020 23:03

I can hear fireworks. Sad

"DH showed me some utter plonkers burning the EU flag earlier on Twitter."

Noone in Germany is burning the Union Jack
The hate is not returned, just patience (and a few eye-rolls)

Apileofballyhoo · 31/01/2020 23:10

Oh that's heartbreaking Evenstar. Made me cry again.

And thought I'd remind everyone about the one EU country you can still live in and eventually gain citizenship of, your next door neighbour.

OublietteBravo · 31/01/2020 23:10

I’m crying. I can’t seem to stop.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 31/01/2020 23:19

Just felt I had to be here tonight.

Have been reading RTB threads since just after the referendum.

Thank you all for so much calm information and analysis.

It must feel particularly significant somehow to be retiring now BCF.
Glad to hear you had a good night.

Leave a Light On is such a lovely message/promise, we should all do it.

AuldAlliance · 31/01/2020 23:19

In a futile effort to take my mind off things, I went out with a colleague tonight, who is also British and has also become French after decades here, because of Brexit. We watched a beautiful French film, in the presence of Jean-Paul Rappeneau, in a tiny arts cinema in a lovely old village where some of the filming took place.
Then we had a glass of local red wine and I drove home along winding roads, between almond groves, cherry trees and vineyards, wondering where I belong and how long I will feel so lost.
As things stand, the UK isn't somewhere I think I might ever return to or my kids might study, as I'd once hoped.

Belinda cheered me up a bit, though, as did the image of BCF's bike cycling her home.

Thanks for these threads.

Choux · 31/01/2020 23:19

A song from 1973. That glorious year. This is my first post on these threads but I have read them religiously over the last 12-18 months as I educated myself on what was really happening.

I've survived 11pm but am so disillusioned...

Words · 31/01/2020 23:20

I sat on my door step and played ode to joy out loud on my phone, then auld Lang syne and we'll meet again.

Crying

Choux · 31/01/2020 23:21

I forgot to say thanks to RTB and everyone who shared their knowledge and view here.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 31/01/2020 23:22

Have been away from these threads for a while now (life, DH’s Parkinson’s, my mental health, yadda yadda yadda)but wanted to come back tonight to say thank you to Red and all contributors for the insights, information and support over the last few years - and to enjoy a little Brexit night solidarity (slightly lonely vigil here as DH has been sleeping for the last hour). Heard a mercifully brief and rather feeble spluttering of fireworks at 11.00.

We drove across the White Cliffs of Dover this afternoon in dense fog - it felt like driving into oblivion - it was like Thomas Hardy had written the weather for today’s events.

Found this tonight in a box of my dad’s stuff. It’s been there since 1973.

Wishing you a long and happy retirement bigchoc

Jennifer Williams @JenWilliamsMEN
I don’t say things about brexit very often becauee 🤷‍♀️ but a thing about brexit that isn’t getting nearly enough attention: the EU were good at sending long term funding £ to the places that need them. There’s still a MASSIVE question mark about govt politicking with that cash.

At the moment, that’s the immediate thing northern (and Cornish and Welsh) places need to be worried about. Especially if you don’t have a Tory MP - somewhere like Liverpool stands to massively lose out
