Massive hug to you Red, Bcf, Dgr and everyone here. 😞

Not just cornish, my town in devon is frequently cited as having some of the worst deprivation in the uk. finally got a labour MP in 2017 and hung onto him in 2019 unexpectedly. Doubt we'll be getting any help from the tories.

Songsofexperience · 31/01/2020 23:47

I drove home along winding roads, between almond groves, cherry trees and vineyards, wondering where I belong and how long I will feel so lost.

Flowers AuldAlliance
I understand. I left my country of birth so young that I don't feel I belong there anymore but tonight has increased the distance some more and I do feel a bit adrift...

Boris Johnson plans to impose full customs and border checks on European goods
The move is a radical departure from pre-election planning

And the EU will impose them back. And then businesses will squeal.

A reminder that my garden has been offered up as a refugee camp as and when Scotland achieves its independence Wink

Plus a light left on in Europe for Scotland Grin

DH said 'it's the right story for tonight, then Johnson will kill all talk of a deal and everyone will forget about it'.

Not sure he's right, but there you go...

If you're outside of a CU and the SM, that's just what will happen. Fact.

Feeling sad. But I am still European!

It’s amazing to see how many people are still posting here after years, (43 months!) and how many have been reading and not posting. I’ve read every thread since posting on the very first one (below). I’ve not understood everything but I tried!
They seem like an important record of these turbulent times, and I have learnt so much about politics and society from them. I hope everyone continues to post as I have a feeling there’s more to come.

Very best wishes and good luck to all on here. Although I have often been sorely disappointed and disillusioned with some people in power, I’ve been in awe of the intelligence and empathy of Mumsnet posters.
Vive l’Europe!

BJ imposing full customs checks ....
Has Raab not yet told him where much of our food comes from ?

If BJ clogs up the ports,
the UK will be missing a large chunk of its fresh food that will be difficult, impractical and expensive to import from elsewhere

Well that's it!

I feel a bit relieved if I'm honest. We can move forward now, whatever that entails.

I have been Mia for a while and it's been good. Today has not been the emotional event I once thought it would be.

I am sad, of course. But very resigned. We can't let the right wing press win. They have got to own this. Its clear they are already trying toshift blame. And that can't happen. As Michael Gove says (quite ironically) we can't blame Europe anymore.

As.Johnson says there will be bumps in the road (if only he had told the 17.4 million that).

Buts it's done now.

I am actually weird for a remainer - I don't want to rejoin. What we had was too good and I never want to settle for 2nd best.

So i will drink my wine and now accept I am a 2nd class citizen. I will go to work Monday as normal and I think we may just be ok.

My heart goes out to all of you who may not be. (Unless you are a Brexiteet)
31st dec is when I will shed a tear for my kids and all that they have lost.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 00:08

The EU takes about 45% of UK exports
The UK takes about 8% of EU exports

Just completely baffled by the drive to destroy everything until there's nothing left standing. Baffled.
I honestly tried to engage with leavers. I can't think how this plan could be good for ANYONE.

Job cuts have started in Cobham as result of sale to US company

www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/18194525.cobham-makes-redundancies-dorset---days-us-takeover/

lonelyplanetmum · 01/02/2020 06:07

Sad about those working for Cobham but one of the ardent leavers I know is a Bournemouth resident so perhaps that will be the beginning of some reflection.

Also regulars on here may remember my FIL making me cry with his racist " they" want to take us over, I'm happy for my son to lose his job Brexit attitudes. Well you may be amused to learn it was genuinely his birthday yesterday. Happy Birthday FiL. He still seemed quite dissatisfied though ...

So within my sadness, I spared some thought for Brexiteer psychology. What now for them?

Within seconds of their euphoria last night on FB etc some of them had started to complain already - within seconds! Complaining about the BBC coverage, about how the day wasn’t a public holiday, about how remainers weren’t big enough to celebrate too, about how there was no local event for them to join, not enough of Johnson etc etc.

What if many Brexit voters (fed by the press) and even Faragist and ERG types just needed something to complain about - anything?

Research suggests the brains of those who habitually complain get rewired so the thinking becomes ingrained.
Another type who vent have a selfish focus and are only validated by attention and sympathy from their complaints.

So the dissatisfaction is emergent in the Brexit brigade already. (And I’m not complaining about it- just observing it!).

Lonelyplanet he might want to reflect on what has happened to Beales and Flybe too but I bet you he doesn’t.

squid4 · 01/02/2020 07:58

I stayed up last night and was really sad. I voted remain, but I was never a hardcore remainer, and I actually argued for a supersoft brexit from 2016 because I felt the vote couldn't be overturned and the issue wouldn't go away and would get toxic if ignored. I was I guess in line with labour in that, until they switched the people's vote stuff. But the thought of the type of brexit we are now getting is so sad and grim. And that the tories have managed to stay in power due to the manipulation of this issue is so so devastating for the country and especially my patients and NHS colleagues.

I live in the city centre of a big city that voted 50/50 leave/remain, but remains very anti-tory. Heard about 2 fireworks at 11pm. DP was out in town, he said it was "normal" (other than some people wearing facemasks in the pub!)

These threads have provided me with some of the best and most nuanced information out there during these strange difficult times - thank you all, especially Redtoothbrush. I'll keep reading.

@prettybird Your garden is SO beautiful, even in winter.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 01/02/2020 08:36

mathanxiety the ignorance quoted in that article is stunning. So many people don't understand how our country works.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2020 08:37

Whatever Labour - or LDem - leader we get will be drowned out by BJ/Cummings until Brexshite really bites,
so probably not before mid-2021

However, we need to have competent people in place for then
