Westministenders: Canada Plus and the Transition Phase

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2020 19:57

As we approach the 31st January, we slowly tick towards exit and transition.

Things are not yet signed off though the No Deal planning has quietly been stood down with no press release and the government have said they won't talk about trade deals post 31st Jan because the public are bored of them and don't understand.

The new EU president has said that the UK doesn't have time to make a full deal with the EU before 31st December with a deadline which isn't flexible.

We still have no idea what the government plans are. We still have many EU citizens feeling very vulnerable.

Perhaps we should start talking about this rather than Royals for a couple of weeks...

Thanks Dr Blackbird.

DrBlackbird · 25/01/2020 09:18

Will midland/northern voters even be/come aware of being shafted by the Tories if this goes ahead?

"A reallocation of council funding could redirect hundreds of millions of pounds from so-called left-behind communities in the north of England to the leafy southern shires, analysis has found, leaving many newly Conservative g-voting “red wall” areas facing fresh cuts to local services"

www.theguardian.com/society/2020/jan/25/former-red-wall-areas-could-lose-millions-in-council-funding-review

DrBlackbird · 25/01/2020 09:19

Though the LGA report itself does say: The LGA is calling for no local authority to see its funding reduce as a result of the review and a transition mechanism, backed by additional funding, would help deliver this aim.

Violetparis · 25/01/2020 09:27

DrBlackbird, I do get what you are saying but I worry that the 'conservative' vote you mention will give up on Labour totally if it is seen as the 'woke' party which insults/shuts down anyone who has different view to them, on the EU, trans rights, Meghan Markle etc. Though, this is a problem for Labour in general rather than a specific leadership candidate.

The WA explained

The EU evidently realise that BJ & co don't understand the WA they have agreed

  • the title of their explanatory document has "EXPLAINED" in capitals

It lays it out with nice easy charts, well worth studying

NI terms are not what BJ claims

I too have been disappointed by what I have heard Lisa Nandy say recently.

Ideally I would like to see Labour put forward someone who could look like a PM in waiting, as John Smith did when Major's Government was falling apart. Someone who would show dePfeffel-Waffel up for what he is.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2020 09:37

Of course any party should allow - preferably encourage - debate on controversial topics

They should only close down those who use debate as a pretext for hate speech
e.g. by all means debate on how we limit immigration, but exclude those who refer to migrants as "cockroaches"
or those who abandon the pissy woke restrictions such as on "bumboys" or N-word

Another problem arises when people say they are being "shut down" when someone else disagrees with their opinion,
or presents data that show their opinion is factually incorrect
Or "shut down" if they are outnumbered somewhere

That applies to both left & right
e.g. TRA supporters on MN who complain of being "shut down" when GC feminists state biological facts about chromosones etc

Mockers2020Vision · 25/01/2020 09:42

Ideally I would like to see Labour put forward someone who could look like a PM in waiting, as John Smith did when Major's Government was falling apart. Someone who would show dePfeffel-Waffel up for what he is.

You mean like an eminent QC with forensic cross-examination skills and mastery of a brief good enough to be Director of Public Prosecutions.

BCF your link does not work for Idiots Guide to the WA Sad

Peregrina · 25/01/2020 10:53

I suppose for me it comes down to Starmer now. Who else is there? Not Long-Bailey that's for sure.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2020 11:21

That's the problem with MN having underlines and hyphens as special characters

I wish MN could ignore this for links - shouldn't be difficult to program after any "www." string without blanks

Violetparis · 25/01/2020 11:21

There was an interesting piece on Channel 4 News this week of a focus group in the Midlands of former Labour voters. They were shown footage of all of the Labour leadership candidates then asked to put their hands up to show if they would consider voting for each individual. None of them said they would vote for RLB, a couple put their hands up for KS and ET, most of them put their hand up for LN and JP. Not sure how to share the link but it's on twitter and worth a look.

AuldAlliance · 25/01/2020 11:27

That's a brilliant document, thanks, BCF.

Peregrina · 25/01/2020 11:49

That is a good document. Do you think Johnson has read it? If I understand it correctly, EU citizens't rights are protected but I I don't see how if the UK blatantly ignores them.

GaspodeWonderCat · 25/01/2020 12:08

Thanks BCF that links works and is very interesting guide. I don't hink Boris has any idea what he has signed up to. But I bet his civil service does ... Interesting Times ...

Peregrina · 25/01/2020 12:17

It sounded much like Brino, for now. What will happen later in the year?

malylis · 25/01/2020 12:39

Has anyone read the Guardian article about funding from former red wall councils being redirected to shires councils under new proposals?

Lets see if they do that.

ContinuityError · 25/01/2020 12:55

NI terms are not what BJ claims

Rather depressing listening on R4 Week in Westminster this morning. Jill Rutter from the Institute of Government pointing out that there’s a fuck of a lot of stuff to get in place by the end of the year (including all the customs documentation) and Bill Cash airily waving his hand saying now there’s a political will it’ll all just happen, it’s the Civil Service’s job to make it happen.

AuldAlliance · 25/01/2020 12:58

Re the civil service, here is a call for increased resources:
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jan/21/brexit-civil-servants-leaving-european-union-whitehall

Peregrina · 25/01/2020 13:02

The political will need to be reflected in resources - which presumably MacMillan provided when he got all those council houses built back in the 1950s. Bongs for Big Ben will not magic them up.

But I am preaching to the converted.

ContinuityError · 25/01/2020 13:16

Sounded like Cash parroting the “Brexit is done” line and setting up the Civil Service to take the fall when the volume of work to be done in the limited time available proves impossible. Wanker.

ContinuityError · 25/01/2020 13:19

And then Andrew Adonis saying that if HS2 is cancelled, the money will just disappear back into the Treasury and it will take years for the money to be reallocated to transport infrastructure projects to improve northern connectivity. Not sure if that really is the case or if it’s Adonis plugging his pet project?

Clavinova · 25/01/2020 13:24

Has anyone read the Guardian article about funding from former red wall councils being redirected to shires councils under new proposals?

Yes - it only seems to relate to one policy area - adult social care - which policy areas are benefiting the other way?

"The analysis models the likely differential effect on councils’ adult social care funding allocations from 2021 using a proposed new government methodology used to direct funds to local authorities."
