Westministenders: Canada Plus and the Transition Phase

As we approach the 31st January, we slowly tick towards exit and transition.

Things are not yet signed off though the No Deal planning has quietly been stood down with no press release and the government have said they won't talk about trade deals post 31st Jan because the public are bored of them and don't understand.

The new EU president has said that the UK doesn't have time to make a full deal with the EU before 31st December with a deadline which isn't flexible.

We still have no idea what the government plans are. We still have many EU citizens feeling very vulnerable.

Perhaps we should start talking about this rather than Royals for a couple of weeks...

The government need to strike a trade deal with the EU that protects jobs and the environment.
REmind our MP that if they do not vote well, they will not be in post for long.

It does, but will it? Recalling Liz Truss's inane witterings the other day about Trade deals with the US, when spokespeople for the pottery industry wanted guarantees of deals with the EU.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2020 20:06

BJ must be praying that the media keep up the Meghan/ Harry frenzy for many months, as all the froth is such marvellous distraction

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 20:06

Bigchoc
That is the exact point.
The subtext of the H&M deal is a framework that will fit Charlotte and Louis so that they can be in or out from the outset without stress
maybe with an "opt" at 21

TBH having seen Kate a couple of times, she ain't no Stepford.
Compare her more with Mary Bankes
she knows what her job is and she'll do it well.

Mockers2020Vision · 19/01/2020 20:10

The Cambridges, "normal" ?

No.

Actually, from a rejoin pov, the exact opposite is required, let trade with the EU tank, lets use harmful pesticides, let the US mug us off and perhaps then the public will see Brexit for what it is and what they really voted for?
Personally, i couldn't give a XXXX if Airbus, PSA, Nissan BMW Cramics et al all fold or relocate to europe, its what these regions/peoples voted for (twice in fact) and if they want to eat crap let them.

One thing that the last GE has taught me is the UK is a selfish inward nation and we should reap what we've sown... but am i bitter? ??? mmmmm

Whatever MPs do or don't do, they are in for at least 5 years, they wont be listening to warnings from "remoaners"

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 20:13

I do care
because the M4 corridor is where I'm hoping my kids get their graduate employment
otherwise they will leave the UK

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2020 20:19

Jess Phillips Webchat tomorrow 1PM:

“if you share the aims and values of the Labour Party, you can have a vote on who should be Labour's next Leader
if you join the Party by 5pm on Monday 20 January.

You can join here

Peregrina · 19/01/2020 20:34

Airbus, PSA, Nissan BMW

Airbus is in N Wales, Nissan in Sunderland. Yes, let's hope they get what they voted for, and in the case of N Wales hold Johnson to his promises. I don't think Sunderland did vote Tory - so business as usual with the old Labour people there, I suppose.

BMW just about qualifies for the M4 corridor - maybe it should be more of an M40/M4 corridor, or Oxford-Cambridge axis? Either way, it's a strong Remain area. However, being a prosperous area of full employment, I imagine it will weather any downturn better.

I don't know what PSA is, so I don't know what they voted for.

jasjas1973 · 19/01/2020 20:45

PSA is the parent company of Peugeot, who own Vauxhall @Ellesmere port, returned a tory MP and voted leave but by a narrow margin.
Luton, where the vans are made, voted 56% to leave the EU.

Zero sympathy, Johnson and his ilk don't represent me, their mess, they can own it.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2020 20:48

PSA own Opel / Vauxhall

Their CEO has warned that they'll close down their Ellesmere Port plant in Luton if the future Brexit deal makes manufacturing cars unprofitable.

Future Astra production there is in doubt and has already at least been shared with Germany - which wasn't the original plan

europe.autonews.com/automakers/opelvauxhall-astra-sales-launch-go-ahead-planned-despite-brexit-uncertainty-psa-says

A PSA spokesman in the UK said the Astra sales launch will go ahead as planned next year
but continued production of the car at Ellesmere Port depends on Britain's future trading relationship with the EU

Remind me again ListeningQuietly , is it four or fives years they have a guaranteed job for ?

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 21:01

frumpety
THeir job is safe till the next election
and the FTPA is dust (as 2017 and 2019 have shown)
so the next election will come when it does

any MP who thinks they are safe for 5 years is a wazzock

Peregrina · 19/01/2020 21:08

Where is Clavinova to cut and paste something to tell us that Vauxhall would pull out anyway?

I would be annoyed if BMW went because we didn't vote for Leave. The City is represented by one Labour and one LibDem MP and the Council is heavily Labour controlled with not a Tory in sight, unless the 3 Independents are closet Tories.

malylis · 19/01/2020 21:19

Please don't invite clav, its so boring to have to go and find the fact that she has posted a link from an old story that has been updated, or massively misinterpreted the data she had hastily googled.

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 21:48

I've not had that much fun closing off threads since I used to post on a defunct site Grin

jasjas1973 · 19/01/2020 22:11

any MP who thinks they are safe for 5 years is a wazzock

True, unlikely we'll have a GE in December 2024, so the most likely date, would be May 2024, so 4.5 years away.

The UK will never move to any form of PR, the electoral are too thick.

Peregrina · 19/01/2020 22:37

The Scots, Welsh and N Irish already have forms of PR I believe for some elections, so are you really saying that it's the English who are too thick?

prettybird · 19/01/2020 23:17

We have three different forms of PR in Scotland Grin: a hybrid d'Hondt system for Holyrood; STV for Council ejections; and (like England Wink)"plain" d'Hondt for the EU Parliament ( Sad). Confused

Except for the time when Holyrood and Council elections were held on the same day and they tried out electronic counting Hmm, we cope Grin

It was claimed that the hybrid d'Hondt system (which I rather like as it maintains a constituency link while also ensuring proportionality in the seats allocated) was devised to ensure that the SNP would never get a majority or be able to form a government pesky voters put paid to that Wink

NiceGuyNeddie · 20/01/2020 00:23

Looks like the Arms is winding up anyway. Wonder where they'll go next? Maybe blast off into space pausing only to write 'Nothing can stop us now!' across the sky..

Agree 100% with your take on H&M, racism and sexism.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2020 06:39

Boris Johnson is to tell cabinet ministers that they must focus all their energy on developing policies for post-Brexit Britain

But they've known for three years that they will be leaving. Why no policies yet?

frumpety · 20/01/2020 06:48

Ah Listening your use of the word Wazzock , warms the cockles of my heart Smile

malylis · 20/01/2020 07:00

I've said all along that anything that goes wrong with Brexit will be blamed on others, the EU, remoaners etc.

Why bother putting together good policies then? You can do it slap dash and blame someone else

frumpety · 20/01/2020 07:17

It is going to be tricky developing post brexit policies, when you have no idea what sort of brexit you are going to end up with or when brexit is going to be officially over. Is Boris expecting good policies (define good ! ) or just any old crap to detract from the negotiations ?
