Westministenders: Canada Plus and the Transition Phase

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2020 19:57

As we approach the 31st January, we slowly tick towards exit and transition.

Things are not yet signed off though the No Deal planning has quietly been stood down with no press release and the government have said they won't talk about trade deals post 31st Jan because the public are bored of them and don't understand.

The new EU president has said that the UK doesn't have time to make a full deal with the EU before 31st December with a deadline which isn't flexible.

We still have no idea what the government plans are. We still have many EU citizens feeling very vulnerable.

Perhaps we should start talking about this rather than Royals for a couple of weeks...

House of Lords moving to York ....
here is the perfect watering hole for them

Darwin Award - LOVE IT

No longer shouting about Brexit

  • sadly we all have to admit that it is happening.
But now the proponents have to make a success of it we will be watching with interest
prettybird · 19/01/2020 14:29

I now find that I'm feeling somewhat disassociated from what is going on at WM. It's like vicariously watching a car crash in slo-mo.

Maybe it's because I feel that where I am, we have a potential escape route and the worse that BJ (and his government) is, the more possible that escape route becomes.

More Darwin Award stuff that many Mumsnetters will have guessed already

Could cheer up the Bercow fans !**

WIll he be a cross-bench or a Labour peer ?

  • obviously won't be a Tory one if he's agreed to be nominated by Corbyn

Gabriel Pogrund@Gabriel_Pogrund (Sunday Times)

EXCLUSIVE

Labour has nominated John Bercow, Tom Watson and Karie Murphy for peerages

All appear on Corbyn's eight-strong Dissolution Honours list, obtained by The Sunday Times
Vetting begins soon

Bercow was 1st Speaker not to enter the Lords upon resigning for 230 yrs (1/4)

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 15:39

Corbyn is a tin eared arse to nominate Karie Murphy

Bodoni · 19/01/2020 17:22

Thanks for the EU citizenship link Pretzels, www.eucitizenship.org.uk/ - have signed and donated. Not going to be cheated of part of my identity without a fuss.

frumpety · 19/01/2020 17:43

Was the EU Parliament not voting to ratify the WA a daft question then ? noticed nobody answered. Smile

< will not be in the least bit offended if the answer is yes >

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 17:47

I just looked at that EU Citizenship link.
VERY misleading.

(a) replace "may" with WILL
(b) it IS democratic - as a party that stood on a Get Brexit Done policy won a stonking majority last month
(c) anybody who ceases to be an EU citizen automatically loses those rights - for whatever reason - d'oh
(d) Moaning about the 2015 act would have been OK in 2015, now it is pure sour grapes

Start from where you are, not where you might wish to be

frumpety · 19/01/2020 18:07

Start from where you are, not where you might wish to be

Is that advice aimed at Boris or remainers Grin

Peregrina · 19/01/2020 18:09

(b) it IS democratic - as a party that stood on a Get Brexit Done policy won a stonking majority last month

Yes, but as with the terms of the Referendum itself - Get Brexit Done is not defined. If it means 'Shut up about it and start tackling the real problems' then yes, Johnson has the mandate to do this. Now it's up to him. So far it's all talk.

I fail to see why we should shut up about that. I was reading earlier on Facebook about someone whose business was undergoing a Brexit related collapse. A Leaver told him to stop moaning and get on with things. My answer to that would be that we were promised untold goodies with Brexit - 'they need us more than we need them', etc. After more than three years, it should not be a question of making the best of a bad job - the business man should have been so inundated with new work as a result of the Brexit Bonanza we were promised, that he was spoilt for choice and had to expand....

Still as long as Leavers with collapsing businesses shrug their shoulders and tell themselves that this is what they voted for. I don't want to hear how it's MPs fault, or Corbyn's or 'Remoaners'. This is yours, you own it.

frumpety · 19/01/2020 18:19

It is a lot more than three years though isn't it Peregrina ? Those wishing for Brexit have been planning this wonderful event for years and years and years ?

Peregrina · 19/01/2020 18:22

But, but....

1935 - a country with people feeling very pleased with their new Fuhrer and stamping around gloatingly in smart Uniforms.
1945 - a country with major cities in complete ruin, and then divided.

Or:
1985 - E European countries behind an 'Iron Curtain'
1995 - The Berlin Wall gone and the Iron Curtain has been rent asunder.

Peregrina · 19/01/2020 18:27

Those wishing for Brexit have been planning this wonderful event for years and years and years

Farage, Davis, Redwood, yes, since at least John Major's time. Ordinary Joe and Jill in the street - since 2016 when they were promised money for the NHS and hoped that the immigrants would be kicked out.

Johnson - since he saw which way the land was lying. If he does wake up to the fact that the country really could be ruined, will he change his tune? Who knows?

The sayings 'How the mighty are fallen' comes to mind, or 'All political careers end in failure'. 'Events dear boy, events.'

TatianaLarina · 19/01/2020 18:39

I don’t like Caroline L-B much and I don’t want her to be the next leader, but good on her for calling the media out on their treatment of Meghan:

“A young couple have been hounded out of the country by the intrusive and racist treatment of the rightwing press. Women of colour in public life are subject to bullying, harassment, disrespect and smears – and all the while are expected to be grateful that they’re getting any attention at all.”

Comparing Meghan’s treatment to Diane Abbots: “And this treatment has consequences. Diane has received over half of all abuse meted out to MPs, including death threats against her and her family.”

The toxic combination of sexism and racism that runs rife through the rightwing press must be stopped.

Respect also to Dawn Butler who said Meghan’s treatment “shows exactly why we need to have a discussion about race”.... “As a proud black woman I’m not surprised Meghan has chosen peace of mind over dealing with racism every day”.

And Jess Phillips who said: “She’s been treated like a foreign upstart – not British enough”.

Please understand, I will continue to fight Brexit for as long as Bill Cash fought the EU
but that website is just hogwash

The Harry and Meghan story will only be truly told once William is king.
Until then everything is gossip funded by tax dodging billionaire newspaper owners.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2020 19:21

"Was the EU Parliament not voting to ratify the WA a daft question then ?"

No genuine questions are ever daft, frumpety

It is very very unlikely the EP won't ratify the WA,
but ...
it is just possible that prominant UK govt ministers could make aggressive public statements about breaking the WA terms - especially about expats rights - which cause the EP to refuse

The EP have repeatedly said they won't approve any WA unless basic rights of UK and EU expats are reliably safeguarded

frumpety · 19/01/2020 19:22

Peregrina are you suggesting that people only realised how bad being a member state of the EU was, when Parliament decided to vote for a referendum on the issue ?

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2020 19:29

"The Harry and Meghan story will only be truly told once William is king"

listening I'd expect either something within the next couple of years,
or one of those 50-year gags until all current relevance has passed and it is just of historical interest

They'll want to sell their story - if they do - while they are still young enough, photogenic enough and sufficiently big names to maximise sales

... probably why Queenie threw them some goodies, while taking away just a little of their privilege and why Charles will likely keep funding them:
to avoid an embittered couple telling all.

jasjas1973 · 19/01/2020 19:30

Until then everything is gossip funded by tax dodging billionaire newspaper owners

Its not quite gossip, M&H are leaving the UK because of press intrusion, will stop using their titles and will not receive any taxes other than protection, that much is fact.
Phillips is spot on, she isn't quite one of us! :( very sad, esp after Macpherson and of course his mother's death.

Thought the website was ok, after all how else do we register our anger? there is no effective opposition to Johnson, though i am hoping against hope Labour/LDs do v well in local council elections.

frumpety · 19/01/2020 19:34

Thank you BigChoc, sometimes I feel like I live in a UK bubble, the EU have put up with so much shit from the UK media and Government, that it is difficult to know how the EU feel about it all. I go on to the European Parliament website and it is a bastion of calm and measured, but there are a heck of a lot of MEP's from all the 27 other countries, who is to say they all feel the same way and are going to toe the official line when push comes to shove ?
The EU have spent the time since the referendum result planning for a no deal Brexit (unlike the UK ) , what's to say that the 27 don't think 'Fck it' and rip the plaster off quickly ? The UK is going to dither and delay* when it comes to abiding by any of the agreed terms anyway ?

Mockers2020Vision · 19/01/2020 19:39

Speakers elevated to the Lords by convention sit as crossbenchers. Since Bercow did not receive the customary govt. nomination, he could decide to sit where the fuck he likes.

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 19:52

The Buck House angle was also coloured by Charlotte and Louis.
If they get it right now, they never have this mess again

Edward and Sophie cocked up but were bright enough to knuckle down.
Andrew is a disaster
Anne knuckles down and sensibly leaves Tim behind.

Narrow right down and then broaden out is a good move.
Playing hardball with Harry gives that option.
William is very much bringing his kids up as normal people rather than future royals.
Times change.

ListeningQuietly · 19/01/2020 19:58

Brexit is happening.
From next month we are no longer EU citizens.
accept that and fight from there.

The government need to strike a trade deal with the EU that protects jobs and the environment.
REmind our MP that if they do not vote well, they will not be in post for long.

The Government need to devolve control away from the centre - use your May vote accordingly
and warn the candidates in advance

and mainly
stay aware
keep debunking rubbish, call out liars
and do not fall for confirmation bias

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2020 20:00

"William is very much bringing his kids up as normal people rather than future royals."

If the RF is still going, then George will probably be able to find a wife easily enough

  • some women will happily become Stepford Royals for years, to become Queen later

However, Louis may find every girl he likes will scarper for dear life
Harry's previous gfs did and the hatefest against Meghan will put off any sane woman from marrying a spare

Nowhere near the same hassle for royal husbands

Peregrina · 19/01/2020 20:02

William is very much bringing his kids up as normal people rather than future royals.

Except when they dress them up as though it was still the early 1950s!
It would be as though Charles had been dressed in sailor suits in photos. Instead he and Anne wore clothes that were the same as all other 1950s children.
