No, not yet, but soon. Just 24 more sleeps until we legally leave the EU at 11pm on 31 January and finally enter the transition period after what seems like centuries of argument, dither and delay. We do so with hope, optimism and a determination to be a good friend and neighbour to the EU, but for now, no one said it better than Winston Churchill.

“This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.”

The Pub Rule is the same as it always was: all welcome but only if you leave goadery outside. The first drink is on the house.

"I'm still backing Barry even if no-one else does and I don't have a vote."

"Barry as leader and Richard Burgon as dep. I reckon that's a winning combination."

"We could look forward to Gardiner's QT every Wednesday when he becomes PM."

"However my very Favourite is Barry Gardiner."

Gutted that Bazza has withdrawn 😟

Perhaps all is not lost & we could start a grassroots campaign for him & Dicky as the dream ticket....?!

Morning btw! Brew

(Bad manners from me this morning đŸ˜ŗđŸ˜ŗ)

SingingLily · 10/01/2020 11:00

GrinDusty, it's an opportunity lost. If Barry couldn't reduce an explanation about anything to painful simplicity, Richard could. They complement each other so well. PMQs would again be a runaway hit for Parliament TV in the US as well as the UK and that Spanish chap would have a whole new act. He wouldn't even have to write the one liners himself. They'd write themselves.

Isn't it amazing that it's taking Labour longer to choose a new leader than it is for Boris to deliver legal Brexit?

I'm in.

Anything to save us from 5 years of Sir Keir at the dispatch box every Wednesday. Boris will have completed a new translation of The Odyssey or organised a game of paper aeroplanes across the aisle before he's finished his first question. No work for Speaker Hoyle as the MPs on the benches will be asleep or having twitter spats with their DC a la Amber Rudd and Flora Gill.

Coppersulphate · 10/01/2020 11:56

Morning all. It is a beautiful spring day here and that breakfast looks amazing. So thank you Singing.

Another Hoorah from me.

I was hoping Thornberry would be leader because she would see the rest of the red wall turn blue. Clearly the MPs realise this and don't support her. She always comes across as hectoring and bullying.

I am particularly pleased that all of the "Change" lot lost their seats. I thought it ironic that they wanted anything but change.

SingingLily · 10/01/2020 12:13

Keir Starmer asks questions???

He's such an instant insomnia cure that I've never stayed awake long enough to realise that before.

It's almost as painful listening to Ian Blackford who, quite frankly, could phone in his performance these days. "Scotland's voice will be heard...blah blah...taking Scotland out of the EU against its will...blah blah...who is protecting the interests of Scotland...blah blah...IndyRef2...blather blather".

I actually miss Angus Robertson, and that's not a sentence I'd ever thought I'd write. He used to ask the questions that an effective LOTO should have asked. Now we have the benefit of neither.

My post was directed at the wilfully disingenuous poster who pretended that they'd not seen your posts on another thread, despite the fact that they'd been interacting with them
For some reason only known to them, they decided to swoop on here & đŸ‘Žâ€â™€ī¸ this thread - that sort of shenanigan bores the tits off me, hence my commenting on it as I did

In fact I simply suggested that Auld share her new information on the other thread rather than here where it would be ignored. I thought she had posted here by mistake (incorrrectly, as it happens). How you can get so worked up about a one line post, and make so many false inferences, is beyond me.

howabout · 10/01/2020 13:28

You just need to join the twitter gang for Blackford Bingo Lily. Grin

See when it's PM Gardiner responding to Blackford the International broadcast fee will go stratospheric. And with Gove as Leader of the Opposition ....

howabout · 10/01/2020 13:38

Just seen an interesting data snippet.

Often pointed out that the majority of 2017 Labour voters were Remainers (70-75%) - hence the pivot to Remain in 2019. However British Electoral Study Research indicates that over 40% of Labour's 2010 voters voted Leave in 2016.

Good God, no, Howabout Grin. There are already enough fruit loops on MN who insist on having the Absolute Last Word to make my eyes roll without venturing into the insanity that is Twitter.

I often wonder whether some of the posters I see on MN are as nitpicky and irritating in real life as their posts suggest. And then I remember all the times in my career when sudden outbreaks of nasty behaviour seemed to come out of the blue but actually had their roots in old grudges lost in the mists of time. It was like playing poker with some very old jokers.

The DUP and Sinn Fein have agreed to reform a government at Stormont.

The Boris effect is spreading. Another feather in his cap.

SingingLily · 10/01/2020 17:40

I was never a fan of Julian Smith when he was Chief Whip - too many sharp moves - but you have to hand it to him. He's managed to broker a deal. I hope it holds and I hope that Stormont now moves forward to serve interests of the people of NI as it should.

Had Karen Bradley still been NI Secretary, I doubt it would have happened; gobsmacking that she knew so little about her area of responsibility that she didn't realise nationalists generally don't vote for unionist parties and vice versa.

OP posts:
Walkingdeadfangirl · 10/01/2020 17:51

Sinn Fein seemed to have been the more reluctant ones to agree the new deal, they are not happy about the new flag arrangements. But at least they will actually be working for their wages for the first time in 3 years.

DustyDiamond · 10/01/2020 18:24

They've both had a fright from the GE - Sky News correspondent said (iirc) 1 in 6 votes lost for DUP & 1 in 4 for Sinn FÊin (might have numbers wrong though)

Seems voters were (unsurprisingly) monumentally pissed off that they've drawing a salary but not doing their jobs for such a long period

Hopefully this will hold & they'll get back to work 🤞

HateIsNotGood · 10/01/2020 19:07

Evening All. A pint of Best and a Packet of Twiglets (Originals) please.

A bit off-topic but with a 'brexity' connection, I've just heard a comic segment on R4 regarding the use of being "absolutely clear" as a prefix to making a statement, opinion, etc about 'absolute shite', etc.

I do feel a certain vindiction about this, having started to be irritated by the overuse of being "clear", and highlighting this at least a year ago.

Spaghetti hoops by chance?

Spaghetti hoops by chance?

Only on toast though, otherwise they don't count.

Spaghetti hoops on toast come topped with melted grated cheese in our house.

Was telling DD1 and DD2 about Laura K looking at Adam with complete inability to comprehend when he told her M Barnier says quiche is not a healthy lunch. My 2 Glaswegians were similarly flummoxed.

SingingLily · 11/01/2020 07:18

Morning, all,

Proceedings in the HoC have been eerily sedate this week. We’ve become so accustomed to chaos and melodrama and Bercow’s bellicose bellowing that it’s almost a shock to see order restored. No more knife-edge results: the only question now is how comfortable the government’s margin will be. It’s almost boring.

Still, for the next twelve weeks or so, we have the Labour contest to keep us entertained despite our favourite candidate retiring early from the race. Barry, be patient. Your day will come!

Was telling DD1 and DD2 about Laura K looking at Adam with complete inability to comprehend when he told her M Barnier says quiche is not a healthy lunch.
I recall reading that when the SNP 56 first arrived at Westminster, the HoC chefs had to make swift changes to the menu to satisfy their demands for proper food. One was the daily option of chips, otherwise known as “Glasgow salad”. I suspect the appeal of chips goes far beyond just Glasgow...

The Saturday breakfast special is french toast with lashings of maple syrup or strawberry jam. Please help yourselves.

Morning Brew

Double helpings of French toast and bacon for the Glasgow contingent this morning. The SNP have organised for us all to troop from North to South and West to East of the City waving our flags in celebration of their new mandate. Unfortunately the weather people have parked massive avalanching puddles overhead for the day so the rally with chips and irn bru to follow has had to be cancelled. They reckon there will be 300,000 of us but I'm inclined just to get someone to punch in for me and stay cosy at home.

Got my fingers and toes crossed for Stormont.

SingingLily · 12/01/2020 07:12

Morning, all,

Well, that was a quiet day yesterday, wasn't it? We barely touched the float. Still, after all the excitement of the past four years, a change is as good as a rest and it gave the staff a chance to sweep out the cellars and spring clean the optics. Plus the Arms is possibly the only pub in the country to be an H&M-free zone which is no bad thing.

This morning's complimentary breakfast tray returns to an old favourite, the All Day Breakfast Barm, so please help yourselves.
