No, not yet, but soon. Just 24 more sleeps until we legally leave the EU at 11pm on 31 January and finally enter the transition period after what seems like centuries of argument, dither and delay. We do so with hope, optimism and a determination to be a good friend and neighbour to the EU, but for now, no one said it better than Winston Churchill.

“This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.”

The Pub Rule is the same as it always was: all welcome but only if you leave goadery outside. The first drink is on the house.

I used the word British so as to distinguish us post Brexit as distinct from EU citizens.

But people who want to rejoin are still British

Arkadas · 19/01/2020 14:02

Given the fact that the figure of 17.4 million is still being bandied around as the number of 'Brexiteers', the amount raised for the Big Ben indicates a lack of enthusiasm/indifference to the whole thing in any case.

SingingLily · 19/01/2020 14:02

Not as interesting as the bloke I nominated, Epic. He not only had forty years unblemished service to the Crown but had put his life on the line carrying out dangerous work necessary for the protection of the public. Can't say more, obviously.

What rankled, though, is that because he was of junior rank, I could on,h nominate him for an MBE when he deserved so much more.

The other thing that rankled when I was completing the application was the explanatory note at the beginning, reminding nominators to use the candidate's full and proper name "unless they are internationally known by a single name or nickname such as Sting. This would be acceptable".

FGS.

Bear, I’m surprised you are being so obtuse here, you’ve been here a while, with our full support and I thought you knew us a little better. Dissapointing.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 19/01/2020 14:04

Spend your money on a party if you must but spending half a million on recommissioning a bell just for this is utter madness

So its not something you would spend 500k on but if some people want to, why do you care? Why cant people spend their own money on whatever they want?

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 19/01/2020 14:07

I seem to remember A LOT of people happily crowd funding peoples vote and other efforts to stop Brexit. Again, it’s only acceptable to spend your money on the ‘right cause’ on the ‘right side’.

Boring.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 19/01/2020 14:07

And I don’t even give a shit about the Bongs! Grin

Bearbehind · 19/01/2020 14:07

epic I’m not being obtuse. I’ve never been on the same ‘side’ as most around here but have long since accepted it’s happening

If those who didn’t want this are just expected to shut up than that is far more disappointing

walkings comment did imply those who would prefer to have stayed in the EU are not British. Even her clarification reinforced that

AuldAlliance · 19/01/2020 14:07

I used the word British so as to distinguish us post Brexit as distinct from EU citizens.
When the UK was in the EU, they were still British. Just as the Italians are currently Italian.
Suggesting I pop off to Pedant's Corner doesn't change what was written, nor could shifting a comma.
For a slip of the keyboard, it's quite revealing. I'm not contesting that you did not mean that rejoiners are not British. Your syntax, however, indicates just that.
My blood pressure is fine; I can't believe the tone of anything I post could suggest otherwise.
Anyway, let's draw a veil over this.

Arkadas · 19/01/2020 14:08

Unfortunately, Walking, your phrasing resonates with all the 'enemies of the people', 'traitors', etc nonsense that we've had to put up with, ie, there is British and then there's not properly British.

SingingLily · 19/01/2020 14:09

Find what you imagine to be a bruise. Keep pressing on it.

Why, oh why? What purpose does it serve? Really?

You've had an explanation. I didn't see it as you did but that's life.

Is this really going to occupy you for the rest of the day?

It the symbolic gesture of the bongs I dislike - for far too many people it appears that that is all Brexit is about and once that’s happened it’s over

Arkadas · 19/01/2020 14:10

Bear - you've had your warning from epic. She is 'disappointed' in you. You have gone too far with your alternative point of view.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 19/01/2020 14:10

“If those who didn’t want this are just expected to shut up than that is far more disappointing”

Un-frigging-believable.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 19/01/2020 14:10

Thank you Lily for the explanation on the honours process.

I cant explain any clearer that I believe British citizens will still be British even if they want to rejoin the EU.

I will leave it there for now as I think some people are being wilfully ignorant at best or trying to goad me at worst.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 19/01/2020 14:12

Right. I’m leaving you all to it for a bit, it’s becoming like herding a group of E-number infused toddlers.

C.B.A back later.

Bearbehind · 19/01/2020 14:13

you've had your warning from epic. She is 'disappointed' in you. You have gone too far with your alternative point of view.

Unfortunately it does feel like that

Oh well, like I said earlier, time will tell

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 19/01/2020 14:21

Oh, and Arkadas. Do not speak for me.

HTH.

howabout · 19/01/2020 14:22

If the whole #FoxingDayMassacre thing hadn't happened I expect Jo would have organised an anti-Bong Court Case Crowdfunder by now. Sad

Arkadas · 19/01/2020 14:23

I was not 'speaking' for you epic. I was quoting you. HTH.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 19/01/2020 14:24

That was not a fucking quote. It was a massive paraphrase.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 19/01/2020 14:25

Anyway. As I said. CBA for now.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 19/01/2020 14:26

It the symbolic gesture of the bongs I dislike - for far too many people it appears that that is all Brexit is about and once that’s happened it’s over

That is exactly what it would have been, a symbolic gesture, of our legal departure from the EU. The real action took place on 23 June 2016 and then again on 29 March 2017 and then again on 8 June 2017 and then again 12 December 2019. We just want to pick one anniversary to celebrate every year.

For far too many people it appears that, just like Hirō Onoda the fight to stay in the EU will never be over.

Arkadas · 19/01/2020 14:28

Oh, epic. You seem to just want a fight. The quotation is the bit in speech marks, like 'this'. The rest was my very own words. HTH.

Bearbehind · 19/01/2020 14:28

OK, let’s give over with semantics and talk about what specific changes we expect to follow after we’ve left

What trade deals do we want?

What VAT changes would we like to see?

What legislation do we want to change?
