With weirdos set to run No10 and Trump seemingly having started a new war in the Middle East, 2020 already looks set to be a cracking year.

To start off your year, it turns out that chinese curse about interesting times is actually a fallacy...

Happy New Year.

May we make 2030...

I see no way

BlackeyedSusan · 13/01/2020 23:03

I vaguely remember 3 for a ha'penny chews at the top shops.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/01/2020 23:08

But too young to remember decimalisation.

Dusty01 · 13/01/2020 23:36

Did anyone else watch Newsnight this evening and see Jeremy Hunt interviewed?

Am I right that he said that in 10 years time the USA may no longer be a democracy anymore? It was right at the end of his interview. And I thought he said that Britain needed to stand with Europe in preparation for this.

I'm surprised. But not sure if I've got it right ...

No. He was referring to China overtaking the US as 1st economy. However he was also referring to the US's more isolationist and essentially weaker leadership in the world. That made it sound ambiguous.

Songsofexperience · 13/01/2020 23:54

Sorry about your friend mother Flowers
5 months is a disgrace.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/01/2020 00:09

It is. As was the 26 month wait for diagnosis for DD. And many, many other similar cases.

Whether Hunt said that or not, it's the truth. The US is hurtling at full tilt toward a resumption of Jim Crow-style voting restrictions, and the effect of Citizens United has been the election of Donald Trump.

In many states I would have more of a chance of being allowed to vote by a steward at a polling place than citizens whose ancestors have lived in the US for hundreds of years, despite the fact that I am a resident alien.

I noticed that the SM was full of Johnson fans literally hundreds all fawning over his great prowess in restoring Stormont. Whilst it's a great thing. ..

Other than securing his huge maj please can I have a balanced assessment of the role the PM actually had in this feat? If any.
Hope that's not too grudging?

frumpety · 14/01/2020 06:51

Has anything actually been happening in Parliament in the last week ?

BlackeyedSusan · 14/01/2020 08:03

Has the WA been ratified by the EU yet?

DrBlackbird · 14/01/2020 08:09

What's happening feels eerie or should I say what isn't happening feels eerie in that there seems a complete absence of news wrt the UK leaving the EU in two week's time. Has the MSM all swallowed happy pills? Or else has some edict gone out that anyone criticising the government will lose their licence?

Mockers2020Vision · 14/01/2020 08:17

No Big Ben for Brexit because it would cost half a million quid.

Just Frawnswah standing on a box shouting BONG!!!!!

derxa · 14/01/2020 08:21

No 10 have banned any govt ministers and Boris from appearing on GMB and being faced by Piers Morgan. Boris is currently on the BBC programme being interviewed by that wet lettuce Dan Walker.

prettybird · 14/01/2020 08:28

He wouldn't have had such an easy ride with Charlie Stayt Hmm

borntobequiet · 14/01/2020 08:33

Surely the restoration of Stormont is down to the DUP having lost their influence at Westminster as well as seats in NI?

Mockers2020Vision · 14/01/2020 08:33

Any word on Saj's (New) 50ps?

I think us kids all got a presentation set of decimal coins in 71.

I think I spent mine in short order, probably on Airfix kits.

Thank you Born ( hello too).Yes that's what I thought- down to the majority having taken away the DUP's influence and ability to extract a price for their cooperation.

So why are literally thousands of Boris fans citing the restored Stormont as proof that Johnson is the greatest PM who ever existed?

howabout · 14/01/2020 09:34

It was Boris who chose to stand up to the DUP and not allow them to hold him to ransom as TM did.

Not just DUP who lost votes. They lost 1 in 6 but SF lost 1 in 4. SF also have to think about positioning for Ireland election.

I reckon the electorate gets the credit for telling politicians to stop posturing and get on with their jobs.

borntobequiet · 14/01/2020 09:41

TM needed the DUP. BJ doesn't, which is why he can "stand up to them". Not his manly competence and statesmanlike demeanour, as seems to be frequently implied.

borntobequiet · 14/01/2020 09:42

Hello, lonely!

howabout · 14/01/2020 09:48

born Boris started with exactly the same electoral maths as TM. She could equally have forced a GE after facing down her opponents or she could have capitulated to the 2nd Ref demands and got the LibDems / Tiggers onside. She didn't "need" the DUP any more than he did because they were never enough to deliver what she wanted.

Peregrina · 14/01/2020 10:37

PeterBottomly, now the Father of the House, was lamenting loss of people who got kicked out of the party e.g. David Gaulke and Dominic Grieve. With Jeremy Hunt saying that the USA may no longer be a democracy in ten years, I seriously begin to think that some Tories are not 'on message'.
