Brexit

Westminstenders: Penny dropping time

RedToothBrush · 17/12/2019 08:12

Johnson already seems to be hinting at protections for workers rights and the environment that he promised are to be dropped.

Along with enshrining Brexit in law to the end of Dec 2020 thus creating another Brexit no deal date. This time without any safety net in parliament.

"won't Johnson be more liberal than he suggested" they cry

About that...

I think I may have found the solution to the DUPs woes. Share NI between Ireland and the UK every 6 months.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pheasant_Island

The island is a condominium[2] established by the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, under joint sovereignty of Spain and France, and for alternating periods of six months is officially under the governance of the naval commanders of San Sebastián, Spain (1 February – 31 July) and of Bayonne, France (1 August – 31 January); in effect it is administered respectively by Irun (in Gipuzkoa, Spain) and Hendaye (in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France).[3]

Now, where's my bung ?

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2019 12:56

My heart bleeds for the DUP.

They could have gone for a soft exit option. They chose not to.

Idiots.

From a mainland England perspective (and the fact that everyday, since birth I have mixed with other people on the English mainland) it's almost heartbreaking to watch the naivete of the DUP in thinking that anyone - or at least anyone that matters - in England gives a flying fuck about them, and NI in general. They might be devoted to the Union, but the Union doesn't even know who (or where) they are half the time. As the ever growing list of geopolitical gaffes spewing out of Westminster proved only too well.

lonelyplanetmum · 20/12/2019 13:11

Don't know if this has been mentioned but this is disgusting- the man is in acute bereavement.

This is what the climate of hatred had unleashed. More like the Bible Belt etc in the US every day.

I think we have established that humans or U.K. ones at least can be hierarchical, tribal and class driven. But it is the role of government to teach and guide against those prejudices not to fertilise them.

Well two of the most vocal Tory Brexiteers I know are very active Christians- one Pentecostal and the other C of E. Helping run the church etc. Relentlessly active recruiting friends to support ditching trade with the EU.

To summarise they both see it as God's will. They wanted to get all those EU (???) ( in reality empire descent) Muslims evicted. And that's a nice Christian attitude don't ya know.

Jan 31 will be a disappointment to them at least.

ListeningQuietly · 20/12/2019 13:25

PMK

I admit that the reality of what the country actually voted for is hitting very hard in this house today.
Very sad.
Trying desperately to find positive thoughts.

How do you know all this?

HesterThrale · 20/12/2019 13:39

Guy Verhofstadt railing against Tory party donors paying for EU citizenship.

Conservative party donors, backing Brexit but at the same time seeking EU citizenship via Cyprus. Pardon my French but ordinary British citizens are being screwed over by their elite.

Looks like it costs a €2 million investment.

I expect the extent to which someone can protect themselves from Brexit consequences will have a direct and exact correlation to their level of wealth.

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2019 13:45

Emily m @matlis
We were told last night that Brexit would not be mentioned by No10 come the new year
“ people don’t want to have to listen to complicated trade deals “

Well....

Bloody Christians !

We don't all think that way. That's disgusting (and un-Christian!) behaviour.

Just tuned in to Parliament live in time for Keir Starmer. Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2019 14:18

In my mum's last church (Evangelical CoE), people there described bishops and ministers being gay as "satanic"
and the leadership protested strongly against a proposed bishop who was gay

However, I don't think they would ever harass a church minister who was bereaved
That's just cruel & nasty

Obviously some people of all religions, like most of no faith, are tolerant of differences and would "live and let live"

Tanith · 20/12/2019 14:20

“ Bloody Christians !”

Do you mean Rev. Richard and David Coles, or the trolls sending these vile messages?

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2019 14:20

and I know this because they would discuss this in from of mum and me

I always kept quiet, because her church was her lifeline and I prioritised her wellbeing

DGRossetti · 20/12/2019 14:34

Do you mean Rev. Richard and David Coles, or the trolls sending these vile messages?

If I wanted to, I'd be upset could even consider I would have been having a go at the vile trolls.

Rev. Richard Coles is another of those people that the UK is so much better for having, and probably one of the best adverts the C of E could ever wanted. It's hard not to think that he's much closer to the eternal mystery of Gods love than some antediluvian anonymous troll that appears to be determined to book a place in their own hell for taking Gods name in vain.

DGRossetti · 20/12/2019 14:36

Churches are to Gods love, what banks are to money. They both like to keep it locked up well away from the public.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/12/2019 14:39

EU withdrawal bill passed easily 358 for, 234 against.

BlaueLagune · 20/12/2019 14:47

We knew that was going to happen.

Apparently 50 MPs have requested that Big Ben rings at the moment when we leave the EU. Talk about rubbing peoples' noses in it. London voted to remain. It's like the Orange marches rubbing Catholics' noses in it.

SlappyWho · 20/12/2019 14:49

Ask not for whom the bell tolls...

SlappyWho · 20/12/2019 14:50

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

Songsofexperience · 20/12/2019 14:55

The anthem of the resistance slappy

WeshMaGueule · 20/12/2019 14:56

Malta sells European citizenship to anyone who has a spare million-odd quid lying around. Which lots of Tory donors do.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2019 15:05

I've absolutely no problem with those who can afford it buying EU citizenship ..... provided they don't support taking it away from the rest of us
