Westminstenders: Penny dropping time

RedToothBrush · 17/12/2019 08:12

Johnson already seems to be hinting at protections for workers rights and the environment that he promised are to be dropped.

Along with enshrining Brexit in law to the end of Dec 2020 thus creating another Brexit no deal date. This time without any safety net in parliament.

"won't Johnson be more liberal than he suggested" they cry

About that...

Everyone presumes the @Europarl_EN will give automatically its consent to the Withdrawal Agreement. But we first need to solve the outstanding problems with the citizens' rights. Citizens can never become the victims of #Brexit.

I don't think too many EU citizens are going to be hanging around too long now.

Tanith · 18/12/2019 15:17

"Yes I'm not sure what's going on. This isn't AIBU people, you know where it is!"

We had a General Election. Posters who were happily chugging along together suddenly realised they were from different political parties. It became imperative to get their own party across the line.
We also had activists popping in now and again to stir up the embers.

Right now, we're all glowering suspiciously at one another while the dust settles. Give it a bit of time and Christmas spirit(s) and things will be back to normal again Xmas Smile.

CanIHaveADrink · 18/12/2019 15:19

I don't think too many EU citizens are going to be hanging around too long now.

Apart from those like me who dont have the choice of leaving of course
Some people have nothing left in their home country because theyve left so long ago. (thats me, I hve no family or friends left there)
Some people cant because of their dcs (mines are n the middle of exams and will be for the next 4 years between them).
etc etc
Thats a shitty thing to say sorry

CanIHaveADrink · 18/12/2019 15:21

He has been saying that for long time though. Nothing new here at all.

tobee · 18/12/2019 15:22

Wishful thinking I'm afraid dk155. They will keep a steely hold.

And as I'm sure Just would point out, members voted for the Momentum supported Corbyn twice.

They will be asked again but not sure what their answer will be.

If I were to guess, Labour will elect another momentum style leader next.

DGRossetti · 18/12/2019 15:23

Thats a shitty thing to say sorry

I have family in the same position.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 15:24

RussinCheshire is spot on, MrsL 👏🏼

Tanith · 18/12/2019 15:24

The EU citizens that I know are staying put for now, but are very uneasy.

EU citizens on this thread may be interested in the following website:

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 15:31

I agree with red that in Britain class is very important, but an inconvenient truth that keeps being ignored / denied

There is class prejudice in both directions - but it seems the uc have managed to stay aloof while getting the wc & mc to fight over the crumbs

It's sometimes said that class for Britain is as powerful (but denied) an issue as race is for the USA

With automation and globalisation, your as yet unborn GC may witness the beloved Victorian pyramid of JRM:
a mass of people at the bottom, a tiny mc, even tinier number of uc ruling it all

CanIHaveADrink · 18/12/2019 15:37

DGR then you will know that things arent easy and that protecting EU citizens rights is a really important part of the process.

Implying that it doesnt matter that much because they will leave anyway isnt appropriate imo
And as @tanith said, most eu citizens are very worried atm, In at because neiter the UK nor the EU has been that supportive of preserving our rights (Id be delighted to be sure to just have the right to stay rather tha seeing my family explode insted tbh)

CanIHaveADrink · 18/12/2019 15:39

BCF I agree the influence if class in the UK is huge. And imo at the root of all the inequality in this country.
Basically the UK still hasnt moved on from feudalism (it just has got a new name UC)

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2019 15:42

When you come from another, flatter (some say classless) country class in the U.K. looks as strong as anything.

I completely agree about MC and WC battling it out. You see it on here a lot with oh the UC don’t do that, they’re all nice / they don’t care how they come across. It’s why manners are a sticker to hide contempt. And people know they’re at the top and would never want to lose it.

Generalising I know. Not everyone.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2019 15:44

I don’t mean to be cutting really. We’re all with our weaknesses. But it is interesting.

dreichXmas · 18/12/2019 15:44

The thread currently running about the importance of using the right hands for your knife and fork shows class issues aren't dead (I'm as guilty as anyone else!)

One of the things I do like about living in the USA is that class is less important here.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/12/2019 15:46

If I were to guess, Labour will elect another momentum style leader next.

If its done as a knee jerk reaction then theyve learnt nothing, likewise if we go running back to neo-liberalism as a knee jerk then thats also wrong.

From a personal stand point I will vote on who I think connects better, Im aware I didnt get it right with Corbyn but Im also aware I didnt get it right with Blair either. Im sure were going to get a lot of MSM coverage of Phillips and Starmer, one has done nothing but demonise the membership and now expects them to vote for her, where as Starmer is media friendly and he's also saying that he doesnt want to ditch the anti austerity message, but then Starmer isnt liked by the Lexiters

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 15:49

https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/election-2019-50834287?

Baroness Warsi has criticised her party's inquiry into Islamophobia and other forms of prejudice,
arguing it does not address past problems.

The former Conservative chairwoman said it needed to cover previous cases rather than just complaint handling.

And she said the party's choice of a psychology professor, who she claimed did not believe in institutional racism, to head it did not "bode well".

Jason118 · 18/12/2019 15:50

Im also aware I didnt get it right with Blair either.

@JustAnotherPoster00 really? You'll be wanting the moon on a stick next!

DGRossetti · 18/12/2019 15:51

CanIHaveADrink

I think my posting style is an acquired taste ... "robust" is one adjective that has been used Grin.

Speaking of adjectives - and in a bid to redeem myself Hmm caught a fascinating exchange on "The Museum of Curiosity" recently about two rules in English we all know, but [probably] didn't know we knew Grin about adjective order and ablaut reduplication.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/sep/13/sentence-order-adjectives-rule-elements-of-eloquence-dictionary

Add that to the system of naming beasts of burden (mentioned in the Green Valley reconstruction programme) and you have a squirrel from me Grin

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/12/2019 15:53

You'll be wanting the moon on a stick next!

Is not invading a country and killing lots of innocent non combatants and british service people for spurious reasons a moon on a stick?

DGRossetti · 18/12/2019 15:54

One of the things I do like about living in the USA is that class is less important here.

Until you hear the phrase "Trailer Trash" Sad

Since we are conflating threads Grin Stephen Fry asked Rich Hall on "QI" what meal biscuits and gravy would be served with. His answer:

Depends what trailer park you live in.

Just because we can't relate to or equate with US class distinctions, doesn't mean they aren't there. DB lives in Tennessee and has learned the lie of the land (he says).

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 15:54

Blairites were not neoliberals

They did too little to reverse the harm done by Thatcherite neoliberalism in the North especially
and that failure is one of the causes for the Northern wc believing Labour wouldn't help them this time either

However, they did not believe in austerity, cutting welfare state provision or further privatisation

DGRossetti · 18/12/2019 15:57

Baroness Warsi has criticised her party's inquiry into Islamophobia and other forms of prejudice, arguing it does not address past problems.

Hasn't she fucked off yet ?

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 15:59

Iraq was agony for the left of the Labour party
But afaik, Iraq was not a significant factor in losing any votes this GE

The left and centre agree on the principle that a PM should not lie to take a country to war

Iraq is a ridiculous reason / excuse to oppose a more centrist leader for Labour

  • noone is actually suggesting bringing back Blair himself !
QueenOfThorns · 18/12/2019 16:00

Until you hear the phrase "Trailer Trash"

Yep, it’s perhaps a wealth thing rather than a class thing, but it’s definitely there.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2019 16:02

Does Hatie Katie mean Warsi should fuck off out of the Tory party, or out of politics, or back "home"
(which is Yorkshire !)

Better suggestion:
Hatie Katie fuck off with her hate for Muslims and anyone a goosestep to the left of Hitler
