A new thread as the other one is getting full. I'm enjoying the post election discussion. Every view is listened to and welcomed.

Brexit is happening, but what kind of Brexit will it be?

New leaderships for both Labour and the LibDems.

Most importantly, will Britain be Great in 2024?

Tatiana and Peregrina, I think you may both be right. I had forgotten the CAT designation. Bath Spa was the poly. But still, not one of the universities that are now the RG.

Back then, Nice-but-Dim Tim went to the RAC in Cirencester to run the family acres profitably.

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 22:15

We have Ed Miliband to thank for this.

Whenever I start muttering about Cameron, my husband always says, 'But Ed ...'

lonelyplanetmum · 16/12/2019 22:16

I am pretty sure that Bath University was never a Poly.

Bath Uni was once a College of Advanced Technology unless that was Bath Spa?

DrBlackbird · 16/12/2019 22:16

Kinsss An independent CS is vital for democracy. That is the point, I think. Cummings doesn't believe in democracy but rather in a ruling elite. Johnson etc happy to go along with it because it helps them entrench power.

ListeningQuietly · 16/12/2019 22:17

Peregrina · 16/12/2019 22:18

It was a College of Technology rather than Advanced Technology. Still despite not being part of the Russell Group, I understand that it has a good reputation for its engineering courses.

tobee · 16/12/2019 22:18

Bath University used to be all aeronautical engineering.

Bath Spa was/is all liberal arts, performing arts.

In other words, the PM is about to massively enhance the EU’s negotiating position. They know he has to come away with something and he has no way out.

Johnson to change Withdrawal Agreement Bill to put into law that transition arrangements with EU, during which UK is in effect non-voting member of EU, must end 31 Dec 2020. Will be seen as increasing risk of delayed no-deal Brexit. itv.com/news/2019-12-16/boris-johnson-to-legislate-to-rule-out-extension-of-eu-transition-reveals-robert-peston/

It is depressingly simplistic and short sighted if they think that having a northern working class female leader is all that's needed to magically bring back the ex labour.

Once again it is classic glass cliff theory- there's a huge crisis or downturn, the chance of further failure is high so wheel out a woman. "Hell - we've tried everything else what is there to lose now. "

Then if the woman sorts it, back to a white male in the leadership role.

tobee · 16/12/2019 22:21

To everyone who thinks re Johnson "no, surely he wouldn't?" All the answers seem to be coming back "oh yes he would"

TatianaLarina · 16/12/2019 22:24

Which is why I think observations that he’s not that bright are valid.

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 22:27

Totally agree, tobee.

Well, we may yet see that national crisis and a Labour government.

But I can't help but think we are going to see what Henry VIII powers and page 48 of the manifesto made concrete may yet bring us.

kinsss · 16/12/2019 22:29

Forget about gender or sex or whatever we are supposed to say now,

Need a person to fillet the Charlatan at every turn. I know it won't mean much for five years or so, but get it started now and at the Dispatch Box please make the charlatan squirm.

Who is best for that do you think, since it all that is available right now, and for five years hence too at a minimum. Sad face..

tobee · 16/12/2019 22:32

As I was musing in the pub (on holiday) earlier about the similarities between having Momentum running the Labour Party and a premier league football club that you've supported for years, has been in existence for 120 years, being taken over by someone who wants it as it's own personal plaything. One minute you're playing ok and hoping you might make the champions league, the next you've free fallen to division 2.

Wimbledon supporter here.

TatianaLarina · 16/12/2019 22:38

Ian Dunt @IanDunt

Re Boris’ decision to enshrine 2020 leave in law

The single most dimwitted and self-harming thing you can do. But still, I'm sure people will be along in a minute to insist on how much more sensible and liberal he'll be with a big majority.

TheLevellers · 16/12/2019 22:39

I don't think it helps that the very word 'Momentum' sounds so similar to 'Militant'.

@pswidlicki

Old enough to remember when 29 March 2019 was enshrined in law as well

Its how some of us felt about Blair

tobee · 16/12/2019 22:48

Indeed TheLevellers. But not so many people remember Militant these days. And those that do, and support it, as still bristling at Kinnock's showdown with Derek Hatton as if it was yesterday. Hmm

tobee · 16/12/2019 22:49

Yeah but the comparison being Blair was winning the league and the Champions League Just.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 16/12/2019 22:51

Yeah but the comparison being Blair was winning the league and the Champions League

Cant remember that much innocent death from having their pitch bombed and invaded for spurious reasons

Peregrina · 16/12/2019 22:57

Perhaps we could cheer ourselves up by making a list of domestic problems which Johnson has to tackle which will need work and competence and not piffle and waffle:

  1. Scottish independence. I think there are clashes between Scots law and UK wide laws. As far as Scots law goes, Sturgeon will be able to run rings round Johnson.
  2. NI and the waning influence of the DUP who are pissed off with him now anyway.
  3. Differences in northern once Labour constituencies and Tory moneyed S England constituencies who have different problems which will need different solutions. The ones in the north will cost ££££.
  4. His own personal dissolute lifestyle, which could yet undo him.
  5. Erm, that's it as they say in Private Eye.
tobee · 16/12/2019 22:59

Yeah ok Just.

chomalungma · 16/12/2019 23:01

Blair won 3 elections.

Corbyn has lost 2.
