Limer problem for Labour is a conspicuous absence of those with gravitas, whether male/female, Northern/Southern not tainted by Remain or Project Corbyn. Stephen Kinnock has a name legacy issue, Red Ed has already done his stint, Yvette has Cooper/Boles to her name.

MarySidney · 17/12/2019 14:52

I actually think putting Nicky in the Lords and leaving her with Culture, Media and Sport with a mandate to sort out some of the "issues" with the luvvies is genius.

I've seen speculation that this is a short term appointment, pending the reshuffle that Boris is expected to do in February.

DustyDiamond · 17/12/2019 14:55

Lot of chatter saying RLB/AR ticket is the wrong way round. I agree with you Lily and so do lots of others.

Me too

I've been warming towards Angela Raynor for a while now

She's tempered down the bolshy & deploys it to better effect nowadays

RLB would be terrible choice

RLB would be terrible choice

Not for those subscribing to Jezza's lofty view of Why It All Went Wrong. In 2017, they thought that Labour wasn't far left enough and 2019 will simply have confirmed it 🤦🏻‍♀️

You could spend many a happy hour on the ConHome website, Dusty. They do the non-partisan stuff from the other side too for balance, which I like, and there's a special section called Left Watch which is an eye-opener.

I've just watched Lisa Nandy's speech proposing Lindsay Hoyle for Speaker. It was good-humoured and non-partisan, as you might hope and expect. Like Caroline Flint, she is a Remainer with a strong Leave seat and argued on their behalf in the democratic interest. However, her speech was a careful pitch for the leadership: she made reference to the political ground "crumbling beneath our feet" and mentioned her cross-party networking.

It's only a snapshot. I used to live in Wigan and still have family and friends there. Local opinion is mixed. But she comes across as down-to-earth and connects in a way that RLB simply doesn't. I'd like her to be given a chance.

Limer · 17/12/2019 15:37

Very true howabout it's like having scraped the barrel, they're peering into the darkness hoping to see someone else in there Grin

Hope they do choose RLB, it'll make for a fun few years Grin

Saucery · 17/12/2019 16:00

The woman is beyond parody Shock

howabout · 17/12/2019 16:16

Agree with you on Lisa Nandy too Lily

Impressively comprehensive round up of the new entrants to the HoC. Striking how many new Conservatives would have been natural Labour. Remain Liverpool Wavertree was held for Labour by a Brexit supporter.

Great list for anyone with late teens looking for career inspiration.

Howabout thanks for that, if I’m going to get interested in politics again, I’m going to need it.

I would like to share the following in a Margot Leadbetter tone of disgust.

I’ve just received a Christmas round robin. To add insult to injury, not only is it the first Christmas round robin I’ve ever received, but it begins with commiserations about the election result.

Christmas has definitely not been delivered to my flat with that Confused

howabout · 17/12/2019 16:46

Autumn you should see my FB atm (one of the reasons I seek safety in the Arms). My Scottish friends are a mix of Nationalists and Unionists but they are all very loud Remain Lefties - well not quite all, but some of us know when discretion is the better part of valour. Resisting the urge to purge all the SNP twitterati as well.

I have quite a few ex-pat friends and round robins are a thing with them. They are also "appalled by Brexit" - can't imagine why they emigrated when they were so supportive of the status quo. Even more puzzled why they think they are better versed on UK politics than UK residents. I was out the country for 2 years - I didn't vote in the 2001 GE because I didn't feel sufficiently able to judge the options from the outside looking in.

Dapplegrey · 17/12/2019 16:50

At least we are spared the prospect of Emma Dent Coad making a bid to be leader.
Did any of you see her on tv? She presumed she’d won in the most awful smug way and then refused to shake the successful candidate’s hand after the result was announced.
I’ve disliked her intensely ever since she claimed that Prince Harry had failed his helicopter exams five times and just sat in the heli going “vroom vroom.”
What a vile, spiteful remark - and totally untrue.

SingingLily · 17/12/2019 16:55

😂Autumn. You could try responding -

"Oh, I know exactly how you feel. If only Nige had completely stood down the Brexit Party candidates, Boris would have won another 11 Labour marginals. Still, a majority of 80 will do to be going on with, so let's look on the bright side".

I dare you Grin

If nothing else, you'll be crossed off the Round Robin list - always a silver lining Smile

mummmy2017 · 17/12/2019 16:59

Curious due to something said he n another thread.
When were Remainers last happy with the Government?
We know it is before DC was elected and got a majority and agreed to the vote.
Was it when there was a coalition?
Or before that?

AutumnRose1 · 17/12/2019 17:00

howabout that sounds awful

Are they people you know IRL?

Dapple I have it in my head that Zac Goldsmith wouldn’t shake hands with Sadiq Khan. Not sure if I’m right but I hate that behaviour.

I’m not sure if it’s time to start talking politics in real life. I expect most of you have seen this thread; RedToothbrush says she wishes we’d had to conversation earlier. I really tried. Perhaps people are ready now?

SingingLily · 17/12/2019 17:07

David Cameron only ever had a coalition government, Mummmy, so who knows?

Autumn, Zac Goldsmith, if memory serves, put some nasty stuff about Sadiq Khan in his campaign material when they were both running for the Mayor of London post. That's why I couldn't stand him. Judge Sadiq Khan on what he says or does - fair game, and there's plenty of that to choose from - but not on what he is. That really cheeses me off.

mummmy2017 · 17/12/2019 17:16

No DC had a majority.
It was when Liberals were wiped out, and Clegg Resigned as leader.

AutumnRose1 · 17/12/2019 17:18

Lily yes, Goldsmith targeted people with certain names, mine included, on the assumption that we’d never vote for Khan. It was beyond revolting. I was angry but dad was actually upset - he liked Goldsmith in the first place though!

howabout · 17/12/2019 17:19

Everything I think about Cameron / Clegg in a no punches pulled piece. No idea what everyone's problem with Boris is in comparison.

unherd.com/2019/12/where-would-we-be-without-david-cameron/?tl_inbound=1&tl_groups[0]=18743&tl_period_type=3

Autumn sadly all of my FB and the expats are long standing friends and relatives. So are half my twitter - I had to search the other half of twitter for sanity and balance but even then half the Labour ones have been on mute since June. Hard to believe perhaps but irl I am obsessively private.

SingingLily · 17/12/2019 17:27

Sorry, Mummmy, but David Cameron has never had a majority government, only a coalition one.

David Cameron was PM from 2010 to 2016.
Nick Clegg was Deputy PM in coalition with him from 2010 to 2015.

Prior to May 2010, the PM was Gordon Brown and he inherited Tony Blair's majority Labour government.

AutumnRose1 · 17/12/2019 17:30

I’m confused
Cameron won a majority in 2015?

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 17/12/2019 17:32

Dusty the forbes article is excellent.

Rlb, please don't make us have to listen to her diatribe please. Urgh!!

SingingLily · 17/12/2019 17:32

Ooh, sorry, both Mummmy and Autumn, yes he did in 2015. Theresa threw it all away in 2017.

I must have wiped 2015 from my mind....

howabout · 17/12/2019 17:41

Cameron did win a small majority in 2015 largely by bribing prospective home owners in key marginals. It was the Osborne 2015 budget which brought in most of the benefits freeze etc which has been in place all through Theresa. Red Ed resigned too soon and so Labour left it to Conservative Heidi Allen to try to hold Osborne to account. PH used it all for political cover.

Autumn just scanned that other thread. DH grew up in Brighton which added to me being Scottish and us both having worked in London for a decade explains my problem.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 17/12/2019 17:47

Evening all. Another great day in the Arms, future for the UK is looking bright.

Black coffee for me.

Did anyone watch Parliament today? Boris got an expected ear drum bursting cheer upon arrival. Then when Corbyn spoke the house turned into funeral a home. He really is hammering in those nails into Labours coffin.

No one mentioned Bercow. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😃

Reassuring that normal service has resumed and Lindsay Hoyle was elected. The previous speaker was just a Bobby Ewing bad dream.

Amusingly (I watched Parliament with subtitles on) when the speaker called on Corbyn to speak the text was transcribed as "kind of cold the leader of the opposition vitamins Jeremy Cole"

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😃

Great to hear the next Conservative sleeper cell has been activated and Rebecca Long-Bailey, aka Corbyn without the beard, is preparing the party for another Boris landslide in 5 years.

I see Gina Miller has finally got with the program. A few years late but better late than never.

Anyone wanting a really hearty laugh watch this.

SingingLily · 17/12/2019 18:10

Walking, that video! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

I was laughing so hard, I've woken up the cats.

Great to hear the next Conservative sleeper cell has been activated and Rebecca Long-Bailey, aka Corbyn without the beard, is preparing the party for another Boris landslide in 5 years.

Raiseaglass agreed on the Forbes article. Tam Dayell, of all people, says similar in his autobiographies. eg He couldn't understand why anyone would oppose the closure of the mines because he lived in and represented a mining community and had never met a miner aspiring to send his DC down the pit. (not that he endorsed replacing pits with post industrial wasteland either mind)
