I mentioned on another thread that mum and I heard a child in Aldi asking their parents “why is that carrot wearing a suit?”

Now I’m thinking it must be about Kevin’s heritage....

SingingLily · 16/12/2019 01:07

I worry about personification of carrots. It's hard enough to get kids to eat veg as it is.

I may have too much time on my hands...

It's the trug that does it, shove anything in the trug and it will give it artisan flair.

When we are starving in the brexit apocalypse we can nibble on the trug and blue passport. Maybe turn the eye back to marrows now we are all very well versed on what to do with them.

Someone one said the waters in front of Westminster would stir, swirl, and the devil himself would rise up and take residence on the roof.

It's a good job we are all so ignorant so we can endure these hardships in our blissful ignorance.

DustyDiamond · 16/12/2019 08:35

Article in yesterday's Mail by Alan Johnson about momentum cult, hard left takeover of Labour & Corbyn's ineptness.

This comment in particular really resonated with me re Jezza's obsession with class war & profound misunderstanding of (and disconnection with) the working classes:

"Most of all, they didn’t recognise themselves in Corbyn’s depiction of working-class people as having no individual identity, only a collective role as part of the downtrodden masses."

I've always thought Corbyn & co applied a middle class, 6th form level, reductive & without nuance approach to sociological factors - buoyed and promoted by 'left leaning' middle class supporters who also have no fucking clue about people who are not 'just like them'.
'The poor!' as an homogeneous blob rather than autonomous individuals capable of independent thought & critique.

Morning, All!

It's another bright blue morning here in the Arms!

The fire is lit, the snug is cosy, the bar is gleaming (our revered Landlady says she doesn't do cleaning - ha! That bar didn't polish itself) and the complimentary breakfast tray is ready. Some kind person left a donation of 55 jars of marmalade and 500 packets of Sainsbury's Red Label tea bags on the front doorstep with a note saying "for the needy" and, not being one to look a gift horse in the mouth, the Landlady has raided the pantry and there are mounds of buttery crumpets and toast on the bar with marmalade on the side. All 100% organic and all in artisanal trugs donated by Raise. Help yourselves.

Today, our brand new MPs will begin to be sworn in - all 109 of them (to put the numbers in perspective, the votes of those new MPs alone would neutralise 54% of the Labour Party). Tomorrow, the Queen's Speech ("Much the same as the last one, Your Majesty, but with some added bits. It will be a breeze getting it through, honestly") and then....we're off!

Dusty, that was one of my favourite moments among many favourite moments. That Brexit Party chap has such an expressive face. He spoke for the nation without saying a word.

Kettle's on.

SingingLily · 16/12/2019 08:48

"Most of all, they didn’t recognise themselves in Corbyn’s depiction of working-class people as having no individual identity, only a collective role as part of the downtrodden masses."

Alan Johnson on the money as per usual, Dusty. There is a recurring sentiment on the Grief Threads along the lines of "I am so angry with the poor. They were turkeys voting for Christmas. I spend all my waking hours caring and being compassionate and trying to help them because I am such a wonderful caring person and they still voted for that liar. Well, I hope they starve to death in the gutter now. And it will be their own fault. So there!"

And when other posters try to point out all the things that are wrong with that statement - including the fact that calling others too thick for their own good does not, as a general rule, win people around to your views - they have a strop and attack the posters.

I can't decide if it's hilarious or depressing.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 09:02

Stephen Kinnock was on Kay Burley this morning talking sense. He looks to be wanting to bring Labour back to a more centre left position by the sound of things, which would be great. The UK do NOT want hard left old school socialism and I highly doubt we ever will. The sooner those momentum idiots get that in their heads and split off to form their own tiny fringe party, the better. We need Labour to get it together, If I am honest however, even with any significant changes, Boris’ leadership would have to be pretty catastrophic for me to vote Labour in 2024, as they will still have the shadow of the corbynistas hanging over them on the backbenches, I still have some way to go before my trust in them as a realistic and non dangerous prospect is restored, however, after that period, my floating vote is likely right back on the table. Not to mention the fact, that I also want 10 years of conservative Government without being bogged down with austerity and fixing labours last rampage on the economy or being hamstrung by coalitions/minority governing, to see what can actually be achieved.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 09:05

Also, brexit will understandably take up a fair chunk of that time, so that needs time to settle and the inevitable rebalancing to take effect.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 09:08

Interesting Article Dusty, Alan’s perspective seems to be, that they should have just gone with TM’s deal. He’s right! It was on the table for the taking, I was never keen on the TM WA and am still not, but from a party line, they were surely beyond stupid to pass up that golden opportunity.

hospitalityinspector · 16/12/2019 09:20

Morning Arm-ers. It's looking spick and span in here I must say. I'm liking the trugs. I might add my own one full of hopeful spring bulbs, which are pushing through - blue grape hyacinths.

As the MPs reconvene I can't help but wonder who will be directing the LP in which way to vote for Bojo's WA. Lisa Nandy said she would only vote for it if alignment to a customs union was included. I know Bojo doesn't need their votes if all Cons are playing nice.

Dapplegrey · 16/12/2019 09:22

I sometimes seriously laugh out loud at some things attributed to Brexit.

Another one was no one will be able to travel to Europe without standing in a queue for 3 days and 3 nights for a visa......which may well be refused.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 09:25

Any LP leader, that attempted to thwart the deal as it stands now, would be signing the final death knell for the labour party IMO, people are done, they don’t want to see anymore of this bullshit in parliament. Even if the tories can pull the whole thing via their whip anyway. People won’t forget. It’s time they all accept the result and get on board. The reality is that parliament have a responsibility to make this work now and it’s not about standing on some BS party principle anymore, we are long since past that. Time to get on with it, rip off that plaster and work towards an achievable positive outcome for the UK.

SingingLily · 16/12/2019 09:41

Lisa Nandy said she would only vote for it if alignment to a customs union was included.

Morning, Hospitalityinspector. So Lisa Nandy is still not listening then.

Epic is right. That ship has sailed. There's a nice bit of irony in the Telegraph this morning.

"On Friday, if the other parties and the Speaker allow it, ministers will try to hold another second reading vote on the Withdrawal Agreement Bill". Tongue firmly in cheek. All seasoned Conservative MPs and all new ones have personally pledged to back Boris's deal. The Speaker is likely to be confirmed as Lindsay Hoyle without challenge. And Remainers Retreat, otherwise known as the HoL, will have to observe the Salisbury convention...not least because the manifesto pledge to reform the HoL is hanging over their heads now, and that in itself is subject to the Salisbury convention.

In the meantime, Dmitri is cracking on with Stage 2 of the plan and I can't wait. The Dissolution of the Ministries.

DustyDiamond · 16/12/2019 09:46

See Dmitri is making noise about sorting procurement in the MoD - long overdue

There's the bigger things obvs, but as a techie at ground level in the RAF it was eye watering to see the price on the packets of consumables such as non specialist fasteners, tools etc which were often 10 times as much as if we'd just popped into B&Q

So much pointless wastage everywhere 🤷🏻‍♀️

Huge, huge procurement issue in the NHS too, which I have observed first hand.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 10:00

That’s interesting Dusty, and something that the average person on the street wouldn’t know or understand. I’m all for getting rid of this kind of pointless profligate waste, wherever it can be found. I honestly don’t get why people are so horrified at the prospect of streamlining the civil service either, if you have 3 people doing a job that either a) one person can do effectively or b) isn’t even a thing anyway, then surely it’s important to bring back efficiency and direction to the structure? This system should work for the UK, not be a ball and chain on it’s ankle.

Get the wasted money stopped, use it where it’s needed.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 10:01

“Huge, huge procurement issue in the NHS too, which I have observed first hand.”

That does not surprise me...

Morning all Brew
Brought my own contribution of loose leaf cos I'm way ahead of the Artisans.

Epic the FT article isn't behind the paywall when I click on it.
Absolutely top TV watching Brendan and Christina (who also usually gives me the rage) last night. Christina wailing she has no nice centrist to vote for was delicious.

Feel free to disagree with me but imho JC is absolutely correct to say he won the argument. He is a Lexiter and TM's WA would have destroyed his vision - no wonder Allan Johnson is salty. He has even got the FT dumping neo - Liberal Austerity in favour of Keynesian investment led expansion. I have always believed JC was more interested in getting rid of the neo-Liberal consensus than he was in winning power. I am going to miss JMD winking at me.

Labour has 2 options on the WA:

  1. vote against it "on principle"
  2. vote for it having "listened to the voters".

If they do anything else they will just draw attention to all the inconsistencies in their own arguments while reinforcing the merit in the Boris compromise.

I doubt they will take my advice.

(I have just replaced my out of date baking powder in hopes DD1 will do some cake making when she comes home at the end of the week Smile - she has an ultra rare Red UK only passport)

BoswellSolver · 16/12/2019 10:05

Wtf....just browsing my podcast options and did anybody know Owen Jones has one 😂 it suddenly grinds to a halt after the episode 5 hours before the election, wonder why??

I haven't listened, interested to hear if anybody at all has though?

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 10:06

“Wtf....just browsing my podcast options and did anybody know Owen Jones has one 😂 it suddenly grinds to a halt after the episode 5 hours before the election, wonder why??”

I noticed his twitter account did the same, haven’t checked to see if it’s still the same, will go look! 😂

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 16/12/2019 10:08

Situation Normal, he is back on twitter in victim mode. 😂

SingingLily · 16/12/2019 10:10

Ah, but we'll hear the screams from career civil servants (the ones for whom a gold plated civil service pension worth £ millions plus the almost obligatory K in the Honours List await on retirement) that it can't be done, it will tear up years of carefully acquired expertise, it will damage the functioning of good government, it will delay everything by years if not centuries at this crucial period in our country's history.

No it won't.

If there is one thing the Civil Service is extremely good at, it's the ability to adapt very quickly to changed circumstances. After all, the first priority of the Civil Service has always been the survival of the Civil Service. Like the HoL, it's met its match.

Go Dmitri!

SingingLily · 16/12/2019 10:12

Wasn't that great viewing, Howabout?

I'm not on Twitter. Please can someone tell me what LOJ is saying now?
