Exit poll

Con majority of 68.

65 seats regarded technically as still too close to call. But that could mean an even bigger majority.

Blyth Valley has seen a 10% swing to the cons in line with the exit poll. 1st shock of the night

My area is the rich part of the constituency - but its remain. for the cons to win here they have to retain that part of the vote. And yes tax is definitely part of it.

I had a woman who lives in one of the nicest houses on the most prestigious street in the area tell me with a straight face today that she wasn't rich nor well off. Her house is worth over 1.2 million (in the NW this is a lot).

When I told DH this tonight he nearly fell of his chair laughing.

She's not the only one though.

And whilst she and others want to retain the nhs there is this sense that its not the highest of priorties - possibly because they can afford private healthcare in theory, if they don't already have it.

You have to appreciate you have a mix of Labour Leavers and retaining Con Remainers in the mix in the north and they behave differently. And the cons need both to win seats.

“If Scotland leaves, you can increase the projected Conservative majority by about 70...”

Are we taking some of England with us?...

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2019 00:42

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2019 00:42

I find it hard to believe that people are so selfish and short sighted.

The way to go is bbc parliament channel. Covering Scotland!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/12/2019 00:45

I think people in the Labour heartlands didn’t feel listened to by Labour. Farage capitalised on it initially and now the stories are reaping the benefit.
All the people who called leavers stupid, thick etc added to that feeling of isolation and entrenchment.

TiddleTaddleTat · 13/12/2019 00:45

Bercow is great on Sky News
Seems like a decent bloke

Apileofballyhoo · 13/12/2019 00:47

There is a sense that Labour failed at this level to represent the interests of trad labour supports.

I think that's hit the nail on the head.

I'm enjoying Sky coverage. It's quite old fashioned and respectable. Never watched Sky before and couldn't bare to watch BBC.

Hazardexhausted · 13/12/2019 00:49

I wanna go to sleep but it's like a car crash and I can't look away.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 00:49

Yep, if you can, emigrate

If you can't, you're probably fucked

tabulahrasa · 13/12/2019 00:50

@tobee

On tax - I agree that it needs to go up. I’m in Scotland and already pay more. Under Labour my household would have paid significantly more, it would definitely have had an impact on us. That said we didn’t vote Tory. My question is why did labour go all out and frighten so many people - income/ inheritance/corporation (small businesses)/dividend/vat(school fees). I’m not disagreeing that all shd be in scope but a more moderate agenda would surely have been more appealing and not alienated so many?

DippyAvocado · 13/12/2019 00:52

So it looks like a lot of Labour leave constituencies still can't bear to vote Conservative but want Brexit so are going for the Brexit Party. Well let's hope that by the next election Brexit is not so much of a deal-breaker and Farage has long been put out to grass.
