Exit poll

Con majority of 68.

65 seats regarded technically as still too close to call. But that could mean an even bigger majority.

Blyth Valley has seen a 10% swing to the cons in line with the exit poll. 1st shock of the night

The immigrant narrative - which is actually about automation.

When are we going to start talking about that?

No games were played by the ERG of course. If they (including Johnson) had voted for May's deal we would have Brexited long ago. Labour and SNP and LibDem remainers wouldn't have come into it. But, typical Tories, don't own their shit.

Lucygoeswalkies · 13/12/2019 05:46

Ooh! SNP only two away from Nessie having a swimming partner...

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 05:47

Labour lost because they ran against the result of the referendum, their command economy paradigm doesn’t sell well beyond the students’ union and they are represented by some very unpleasant arrogant politicians who regard their traditional voter base with visceral contempt. The assertion that a second referendum would deliver Remain? Delusional. This election is a second referendum. Constituencies that have voted Labour for a hundred years have gone Conservative. Time to ask why.

BestIsWest · 13/12/2019 05:48

Well they’re going to have to own it now Tobee

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/12/2019 05:48

The immigration narrative in the UK predates automation. There has always been an undercurrent of xenophobia in this country you just need politicians to manipulate it.

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 05:49

Just wait till Boris starts winning votes in the new House of Commons! I suspect there are going to be rather a lot of them Smile

CatteStreet · 13/12/2019 05:49

I was knackered anyway but went to sleep before the exit poll last night (11pm here) as feared this would happen. My dh came into the bathroom this morning and said 'The Tories... and I said 'stop it, I know'.

I'm really, really sorry. I feel the same kind of impotent sorrow as if someone close to me had suffered a bereavement.

I've got German citizenship, this won't affect me personally, but the sad bewilderment at what is happening to my country that has become a regular feature in my life over the last 3.5 years has stepped up a notch.

CatteStreet · 13/12/2019 05:50

Many of you have many a reason to be very angry indeed, but hold on to your compassion.

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 05:50

What is wrong with people?

It's as if Enoch Powell were still alive and kicking.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 05:50

So far Brexit has cost 70 billion quid in lost GDP and costs
Total investment massively down on 2015
We've lost new tech investment such as Egon Musk's new car

  • and we haven't left yet

290 billion quid, that's 45% of UK exports are to the E27
Any significant damage to that will hammer the economy

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 05:50

If you read the media and spend a lot of time on Twitter tonight’s a bit of a shock. For the rest of us it was always coming

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/12/2019 05:51

People believe brexit will improve their lives. They felt the Tories are best placed to "deliver" brexit. This sadly is the delusion.

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 05:52

It's as if Enoch Powell were still alive and kicking

You really can’t help it, can you?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/12/2019 05:53

It seems some posters want us to believe racism and xenophobia do not exist at all in the UK.

prettybird · 13/12/2019 05:53

So, the Western Isles (currently SNP) and Orkney & Shetland (currently held by --Liar-/ Carmichael, LibDem) still to go.

Both island archipelago constituencies, so very late to declare.

That 50 could still be achieved Grin I'm sure she'll wriggle out of it (maybe with some goose fat Wink) on the basis that it's not more than 50 Hmm (not sure what the actual wording of her "bet" was).

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 05:54

There's going to be 5 years of bitter resentment and rebellion
Of a braindrain of the young & talented out of the UK

CatteStreet · 13/12/2019 05:55

Rough translation of a headline on Der Spiegel website about the election:

'Master of chaos beats the man people love to hate.'

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 05:55

Sunder Katwala
@sundersays

A gain of only one seat (Putney) equals the worst ever modern result for her majesty's official opposition, matching 1931 (when Labour took the Liverpool Scotland constituency from the Irish Nationalists). In 1983 there were a handful of nominal gains (after boundary revisions).

Corbyn is truly a record-breaking politician!

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2019 05:55

dup down to 8 seats.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 13/12/2019 05:55

Very interesting info graphic on sky news on the age spread of voters and how votes translated into seats. It didn't contain any shocks.

ghost there always is, but it never went away Sad

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 13/12/2019 05:56

Morning. I woke from a nightmare about all this except May was still PM and some lying mudering rapist chasing me. No one believed me when I tried to get help. Waking up the reality isn't much different.

Goodbye all and much love and luck to those who didn't vote for this and who will suffer most. I might lurk from time to time but for now I need to regroup. Huge thanks to Red for all the threads. Take care of yourselves x

prettybird · 13/12/2019 05:56

Just listening to BJ talking to CCHQ congratulating them and stating that the Conservative Party can now genuinely speak for every part of "this country" ConfusedAngry

And therein he immediately demonstrates his lack of respect for or consideration of Scotland Angry
