Brexit Arms: Election Night Lock-In

Welcome to the Brexit Arms - it's going to be a stormy old night! We're about to be buffeted from right to left and back again with no real idea what the landscape will finally look like in the morning. All are welcome to weather the storm in the warmth and safety of the Arms - but please remember this a hospitable establishment so let's try and keep it that way.

We're kicking off the evening with our Back to the 70's theme night while we wait for the big main event to unfold. The juke box is loaded with all your 70's favourites. Feel free to dance round your handbags but please, no dancing on the tables…. this could be seen as having too much fun.

As always, we've got a nice big pot of PG Tips on the brew and Camp coffee by the mugfuls in addition to our usual alcoholic beverages.

On a serious note, we know that tonight's events are going to cause some upsets. With this in mind, the mint imperial bowls on the bar have been filled with Diocalms and we urge all our customers to make use of these. There should be enough to go round as long as nobody starts trying to stockpile. We simply cannot risk the need for plumbers to unblock our loos on Friday morning, as they could have been called out on strike by then.

Landladies on duty tonight will be:

20:00-22:00 Greenish (with Babychams, Cherry B's and vol au vents)
2200-midnight Twattage (with Classic Dmitris and cheeseboard)
Midnight-0200 Singing (with stiff brandies to calm the nerves, plus a selection of fresh nuts)
0200-0400 Hate (possibly with Albanian delicacies and a hangover cure)

We'd like to get the glitter ball turning with this absolute classic:

….fingers crossed similar scenes will abound in the Arms by the end of tonight. Enjoy!

P.s. When ordering drinks between 8pm and 10pm please supply your own drinks emojis. Thankyou!

That’s very interesting to know. Clearly there are many labour members and MPs who want that, I bet many private discussions are looking at what they can do.

placemats · 13/12/2019 13:16

As this seems to be the place to celebrate victory:

wonkylegs · 13/12/2019 13:35

@SingingLily
It's got bugger all to do with being challenged
First post refers to my experience around me which is as valid as anyone else's
Second I clarify this but also acknowledge the national picture
I personally don't think we are out of this mess yet. That is not necessary right or wrong, it is my opinion and it can and will be different from other people's.
I have no party allegiance, I have difficulties with all of them. I have not 'seen the light', I think that for me the political waters are still very muddy and I doubt I'm the only one who thinks this way.

placemats · 13/12/2019 13:42

And another, very moving, victory speech.

There seems to be a real level of optimism around today, that hasn't been felt in years. I feel like a cloud has lifted.

I know that Brexit is going to take years to fully sort out, and I know there will be some negative impact, but it's great that there is a decent majority government who will be able to push legislation through, without other parties blocking and dekaying Brexit at every turn.

I hope that Bojo works hard to justify people's faith in his party getting Brexit done. He isn't the most honest politician, I know, and has form for misbehaving in his personal life, but his positive attitude and confidence is worlds away from TM (who I felt quite sorry for, but she didn't have what it took to get people on side).

Saw Corbyn give an interview where he said he had tried to pull the country together... well, he's certainly done that - people are united in their dislike of him, and their distrust of his policies!

mummmy2017 · 13/12/2019 14:12

Someone started a Labour didn't lose post. Maybe Corbyn, as he doesn't seem to get the hint. Just go man.

DustyDiamond · 13/12/2019 14:17

A bad Victoria Wood pastiche act is not going to appeal the Northern voters.

😂😂😂
So much this!!

Also have felt a massive sense of optimism today & like a cloud's been lifted (have still not slept yet so it might just be sleep deprivation Confused)

Also want to say thank you to all patrons & various hosts - it's been a roller coaster over the last 4 & half years but finally that's it! It's happening! There is no more Remain, no more 2nd ref, no more dicking around... it's decided, finally! We're definitely leaving the EU!!

I've had such a good laugh with everyone over the last few years, and the last few weeks have been brilliant with all the new faces & old popping up 🥰
I'll definitely keep coming onto the threads until actual Brexit Day at least & we have to pencil in a Brexit Day party 🥳 😍

In other news - I got a lovely PM off a poster who lurks, and I said I'd pass on what she said (will cut & paste the PM in new post)

We prayed for Sally, and we won!! ✊✊✊

mummmy2017 · 13/12/2019 14:25

Some questions I have.
What happened to the student vote, that was meant to win for labour?
The tactical voting?
The 1/3 of electorate who never voted, but seem upset by the results?

XingMing · 13/12/2019 14:27

Very late in the day, I'm joining the cheer for democracy. I slept early, then dozed listening to the results come in and the chat, so I knew about 4 am that there was a big majority stacking up.

Then I went out at 7.30 to meet an articulated low loader dropping off a mezzanine floor, and all the small business people involved were so relieved at the news. A family haulier from near Brighton, a father-daughter kitchen design team about to move into new premises and build their business up: it's small enterprises, one step away from their parents' social housing, with whom the Tories must keep faith now.

For the many....

DustyDiamond · 13/12/2019 14:32

PMs I got from shy lurker (one Pre & one Post result!):

I just want to let you know how much I've appreciated you landladies and (most of) your customers through this madness. I wish to stay a lurker in the corner of the bar but I agree wholeheartedly with your opinions and fears re Jezza et al. I cannot begin to comprehend how the dangerous duo are even in this dangerous position of becoming leaders of our government.

You have all stayed focused, without resorting to insults. It can't be easy but please keep it up.

The breakfasts are the best and the 'joshing and bantz' have me in stitches.

I'll be sitting in the corner tonight with a churning stomach. Hope hot toddies and mulled wine are available later to calm my nerves.

Best of luck to us all. We're going to need it.

Cheers all.

OMG can you believe it? What a night. I had truly begun to doubt this great country and have been so worried for our future, but the silent majority broke through when we most needed it. Phew!

(Bojo) really needs to follow through now, with the remain alliance still snapping at his heels. Those labour strongholds he's taken will be expecting some payback and rightly so.

You can pass on my grateful thanks to the thread for the entertainment and stoic resilience the landladies and patrons have maintained throughout this whole debacle. I take my (commie) hat off to them.

I'm eternally grateful to those of you who have stood up for the silent majority. xxx

🍷✊😍

DustyDiamond · 13/12/2019 14:34

all the small business people involved were so relieved at the news

That's lovely Xing 😊

For the many indeed!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 13/12/2019 14:36

What happened to the student vote, that was meant to win for labour

Thats the thing..one of the things, there have been many things...that pissed me off about this election

I had two lovely but not particularly politically interested friends saying they were going to tactically vote to stop labour. I did explain that it was a massive tory safe seat and not a hope of labour winning

And they said ‘but what about the students?’

And the really silly thing was that 6 out of 7 of our children who Expressed an opinion\voted were NOT voting for labour

So they were worried about everyone elses children voting labour

I blame the media Grin

DustyDiamond · 13/12/2019 14:46

A couple of the students I was at uni with had pro labour, anti Tory stuff in fb

My eldest is a few months shy of 18 (to his disgust) and would have voted Tory - said his friends who could vote were a mixed bag (don't know if they actually did vote though Confused)

My 14 yr old voted Tory in the mock election at school (not sure who won there though)

The young lads at work have been vocally anti Corbyn but not sure if they actually voted though...
(It's military though so they're pretty much not going to vote for someone who thinks they're the devil incarnate 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I don't personally know enough yoof to form a proper conclusion though...!

Bearbehind · 13/12/2019 15:06

I’d like to think that the students were economically savvy enough to see Corbyn’s free for all give away for exactly what it was

Twattage13 · 13/12/2019 15:07

Those are great messages Dusty I am so glad to have found this tolerant thread. I am also feeling a huge sense of weight off my shoulders today.

I have secretly been a massive Boris fan since he got stuck on the zipwire in 2012, so hoping he does really well for the many everywhere now, that have put their faith in him.

I had also been expecting / hoping for a landslide but was too scared to say it in case I was wrong and jinxed it. Phew!

Limer · 13/12/2019 15:48

Lovely to read those PMs DustyD Smile

I'm refreshed now after a little sleep. Coming to terms with having a local Conservative MP for the first time since 1992 Grin

I just keep on smiling to myself, Boris did even better than I expected!

GreenishMe · 13/12/2019 16:02

I agree about that sense of relief. I'm still a little in shock at how savagely Labour have been punished for their arrogance and treachery.

All the parties should take note for future ref.

OP posts:
Saucery · 13/12/2019 16:09

LibDems also punished for arrogance and treachery (I’ll not forget the coalition in a hurry).
WYSIWYG with the Conservatives, unpalatable though they may seem at times. I’m tempted to draw up a spreadsheet of what is being laid at their door on here and FB - I swear if a meteor hit East Cheam they’d cop the flak for it right now.
Happy to work with what they’re offering, which doesn’t mean sitting back and letting them get away with stuff. Better that than an endless grey Labour future being lied to and patronised.

notangelinajolie · 13/12/2019 16:40

Delighted with the result. JS gone, JC going and Boris is back with bells on.

I'm just coming out the other side from a nasty cold and for the first time in forever I missed election night, however I did get up to see the exit poll and saw the first few votes come in. After Blyth Valley I knew it was in the bag.

Let's hope Boris can keep this air of positivity that is sweeping through the nation going and in particular in all those traditional Labour seats who voted for change. It's all looking good Smile Business is relieved because the uncertainty has gone and the pound is on the up. And finally, with a majority government there will be no more shameful, childish shenanigans in the House of Commons. A fair few of those MP's responsible for that have gone - thank you to the Labour voters who took a deep breath and voted them out. It is not an easy thing to do, I am the grand daughter of a coal miner and my political genes are Labour but I took the plunge after the Brexit vote and I very much doubt I will be voting Labour again.

Bloody proud of this country today - the people have spoken and the mandate for Brexit couldn't be clearer.

Can I have a Pina Colada please?

SingingLily · 13/12/2019 16:47

Back from doing RL stuff.

☕️☕️ for Dusty's correspondents, or 🍷🍷 as the sun is technically over the yardarm. Pina colada for Notangelinajolie (and hope you are feeling better).

I'm relatively new to these threads. Epic, Dusty, Time4chocolate and many others have had years of verbal rubbish thrown at them and managed to keep the faith. I raise my cup of builders brew to them for their fortitude and grace under fire.

Now, this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

Winston Churchill, November 1942. The words resonate now, as they did then.

We all know there's a long way to go, to rebuild and restructure our country, to regain our place in the world, to shape and deliver the priorities that really matter to this country, to go forward. I am finally confident that we can do this at long last and although I chafed under Theresa May's dither and delay, it was - in hindsight - a blessing because it killed her dreadful WA dead in the water.

Refighting the tired old arguments of the referendum? That ship has sailed.
Second referendum? That ship has also sailed.
Denying democracy? That ship has sailed too.

In fact, the whole flotilla has left the harbour. Time for people to face up to that.

Now it's time for Boris and the team to roll up their sleeves and finally, finally get on with the job of putting this country back together. They have the country's blessing.

SingingLily · 13/12/2019 17:08

OMG! Why did I not know that Durham North West turned 💙💙💙?

Laura Pidcock gone.

In the spirit of reconciliation, I'll say no more, other than "mind that door".

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 13/12/2019 17:08

Wonderful pm dusty.

We were silenced for a while...

Great Post singing.

We've all put up with so much and waited so very long.
I still can't believe it.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 13/12/2019 17:10

It’s finally sunk in. I am dog tired, but properly elated and relieved, I was making a cuppa earlier, and spontaneously had the biggest sigh of relief ever. No more fucking about, and democracy prevails finally! The country can start to move forward. Landlady, we need some party tunes! 😉💃🥀🎶

Today, is a great day! 🙌 🇬🇧

RaiseaGlasstoFreedom · 13/12/2019 17:12

I've been around teens on the cusp of voting age and those that are.

They are not stupid, all had very intelligent informed discussions about politics.
Different backgrounds and abilities I really don't feel there is a corbyn army out there. There never was.

Whose yelling on sky news?

Is that Steve bray gone bezzerk?

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 13/12/2019 17:14

“Is that Steve bray gone bezzerk?”

I think so... looks like we might have to put up with him a little longer... 🤦🏻‍♀️
