Brexit Arms: Election Night Lock-In

Welcome to the Brexit Arms - it's going to be a stormy old night! We're about to be buffeted from right to left and back again with no real idea what the landscape will finally look like in the morning. All are welcome to weather the storm in the warmth and safety of the Arms - but please remember this a hospitable establishment so let's try and keep it that way.

We're kicking off the evening with our Back to the 70's theme night while we wait for the big main event to unfold. The juke box is loaded with all your 70's favourites. Feel free to dance round your handbags but please, no dancing on the tables…. this could be seen as having too much fun.

As always, we've got a nice big pot of PG Tips on the brew and Camp coffee by the mugfuls in addition to our usual alcoholic beverages.

On a serious note, we know that tonight's events are going to cause some upsets. With this in mind, the mint imperial bowls on the bar have been filled with Diocalms and we urge all our customers to make use of these. There should be enough to go round as long as nobody starts trying to stockpile. We simply cannot risk the need for plumbers to unblock our loos on Friday morning, as they could have been called out on strike by then.

Landladies on duty tonight will be:

20:00-22:00 Greenish (with Babychams, Cherry B's and vol au vents)
2200-midnight Twattage (with Classic Dmitris and cheeseboard)
Midnight-0200 Singing (with stiff brandies to calm the nerves, plus a selection of fresh nuts)
0200-0400 Hate (possibly with Albanian delicacies and a hangover cure)

We'd like to get the glitter ball turning with this absolute classic:

….fingers crossed similar scenes will abound in the Arms by the end of tonight. Enjoy!

P.s. When ordering drinks between 8pm and 10pm please supply your own drinks emojis. Thankyou!

Am going to repost my most fabulous picture that I posted in the middle of the night coz I'm so very proud of it...

It took me HOURS to do all the cutting & pasting properly so I expect many plaudits and genuflection 😉

DustyDiamond · 13/12/2019 08:52

YY Greenish - me too

I was getting increasingly angry over the course of this year & was raging by the time BJ's attempts at getting a GE were being blocked

Was nervous as hell during the campaign - was petrified it would be a hung Parliament

Now I just feel joyous but calm

We're finally able to look to the future & move forward
Stop fighting the battles of nearly 4 years ago

Morning all. I went to bed around 11.30 but woke around 3am to check for updates. It’s a very good result for Boris, and the size of the win helps avoid the argument that people are still divided in what they want. Let’s be honest this is a big mandate for Boris, and I know what will be hard for many Labour voters to hear. But seeing strong labour majorities overturned is quite something and you can’t ignore that decision by voters in those areas to turn away from Labour.

I think Labour need to reflect. The party is trying to serve two groups, using the votes of traditional working class heartlands to prop up a very left wing liberal agenda that suits a small, urban elite mainly based in London. I think many momentum supporters need to get out of the bubble and actually listen to voters in forgotten places, but instead their support was taken for granted. They were sneered at and preached at. Labour rolled celebs out like Hugh Grant, thinking that gave them the high ground. I find it astonishing that Labour even thought it was a good idea. Nothing says out of touch more than Steve Coogan telling you to vote labour.

Even this morning, some hardcore Corbyn fans are still blaming the media, Jews, the “uneducated” for labours loss. They just don’t get it.
They think more socialism is the answer and the public just need to be shows (or told?) or its virtues.

I think labour needs to split maybe, it can’t hold this coalition of members together for much longer. Momentum will want to go further left and I can’t see a true unity candidate in their ranks who can sell a hard left agenda to the general public. It’s just incompatible. I just wonder when the penny will drop. I hope the moderates can break away and form a decent opposition party.

And yet again we effected change without physical protests or civil unrest

Millions of pencil marks on millions of pieces of paper

Yes, once again people have shown that power and change lies is in the quiet privacy of the ballot box not the loud shouting/foot stamping on the street. Exactly as it should be.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 13/12/2019 08:57

Morning again all, I had 1 1/2 hrs or restless sleep, like a kid at christmas, knowing that Santa has been, but can’t open my presents just yet. 😂 I’m up, the wrapping paper is strewn across the floor, I got everything on my list. And now I’m drunk on exhaustion, relief and elation.

Ahhhhhhh... and relax. We might even have some positive news on the business coming today, so keep your fingers crossed! It would make my day truly amazing to be able to settle that gripping fear too.

Well done to everyone, for not being beaten down, by some of the most disgusting abuse and behaviour, I have ever seen from some fellow brits. They lost this shite, every sanctimonious celebrity, every nasty abusive gobshite on social media, every brexit blocker, every biased media channel, every ridiculous marxist policy, every politician that didn’t care what the electorate thought. And now the inevitable tsunami of bile that keeps coming.

This win is finally a thumbed nose to all that bullshit.

A couple of days ago I was ashamed to be british. Not anymore, I’m proud of my fellow countrymen and their canny knack of seeing off dangerous charlatans. I for one, hope British Jews can sleep well again today for the first time in ages, knowing that their country is truly behind them.

SingingLily · 13/12/2019 08:58

Unfortunately lots of people round here do think it will be done quickly
There are some who understand it's a complex process but many who have no understanding of what it entails and have faith in what they have been told that come 31st of Jan - it will be done and then they can get back to normality

"Some^^ who understand..."?

"Many^^ who have no understanding..."?

Wonkylegs, where have you been for the last three-and-a-half years, chuck? We've had 41 months of being told we are thick, uneducated, didn't know what we were voting for. 41 bloody months of it.

Just for once, put your superiority aside and recognise a fundamental truth. Leavers knew how enmeshed we were with the EU, knew how much of our laws and policies were determined in some shoddy deal in Brussels and not by what amounted to the Provincial Council of Westminster, knew it would years and bloody years to untangle the whole lot. Leavers knew that the best time to leave the EU would have been before John Bloody Major signed bloody Maastricht but used every trick in the book including a three line whip and took it to the wire to force it through.

Leavers knew that our last chance to be free again was David Cameron's knee jerk "I can win this, I'm a winner" referendum. We knew we would have to scrap and fight for every vote. We knew it would be a battle to get out.

But you know what? We kept going because we knew the value of what we were fighting for.

So - just once, just for today - take your condescension and your superiority and pack it in, chuck.

Hollycatberry · 13/12/2019 09:00

I agree about Caroline Flint and Luciana Berger not being elected being a shame. I had respect for both, and definitely wanted to see Luciana elected as two fingers up to the racists and bullies that hounded her from Labour.

GreenishMe · 13/12/2019 09:01

I just feel so relieved to discover that we are still a democracy.

I hope Labour/Momentum now realise and accept that. I am very sad that our real Labour party has been so infiltrated that I was unable to vote for them in such an important election.

Anyway, today's a good day. Stalemate over.

Oh and good morning, all, on this bright and fabulous blue morning!

Will catch up on the thread now I've got that off my chest.

Fabulous meme, Dusty - thank you. Have saved it because it will warm my heart in the battles to come.

I've got one I want to post - nothing near as good but still - but reached my limit with that random cat bed photo. Will try again later.

Hollycatberry · 13/12/2019 09:02

Yes epic 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Songsofexperience · 13/12/2019 09:04

We kept going because we knew the value of what we were fighting for.

So do remainers. They won't stop just like you didn't.
I want to live in a country where my opinions have a platform- because it is a free country.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 13/12/2019 09:07

“wanted to see Luciana elected as two fingers up to the racists and bullies that hounded her from Labour.”

Agreed.

GreenishMe · 13/12/2019 09:07

It's brilliant Dusty :)

Yes, Songs, you and I agree on this. 100%.

So make your arguments. Make them logically and respectfully. People of all political persuasions will listen. They might even think you have a point. Hell, they might even change their minds.

Start the campaign to Rejoin if you want. Because that's fine, that's democracy.

But this current mindset that the way to change people's minds is to get in their faces and shout at them till they are so cowed they will give up is just not how it works. Not you personally, Songs, but you've seen how Leavers - and Conservatives - have been demonised over the last 41 months.

It's the same mindset now that afflicts the Momentum lot and this is why they will believe - in the face of overwhelming evidence - that they wuz robbed. That the people were just too thick to see what a wonderful country Jezza would lead us to.

Are we agreed on that?

mummmy2017 · 13/12/2019 09:18

Epic got my fingers and toes cross for your business. Xxxx

I waited till the exit poll news. Then went to sleep.
Checked at 4 this morning to make sure.
I think Boris had better order polish this Superman suit and do us proud.

SingingLily · 13/12/2019 09:20

I might give myself a laugh and read the "other" thread from last night. Grin

Twattage13 · 13/12/2019 09:51

Morning - well I've managed about 5 hours sleep (I had to go crash after Head Girl Jo lost her seat) and I still can't quite believe it.

Have managed to down a massive coffee as have a call with someone v senior at 10...hope I'm not going to sound insane!

Back a bit later...

I've had to snooze a ton of people on my FB feed who are all weeping into their lattes this morning...apparently we're still all evil and racist and also thick. No wonder nobody knows how I voted in real life.

Hollycatberry · 13/12/2019 10:01

This video summarises most Labour voters approach to discussing politics. Shout over everyone and then be surprised when in the privacy of the ballot box people vote the opposite way.

Morning all
May I have several coffees?

I’m not in work today, praise be, but have been glad already that so few contacts know how I voted. Blimey. The attitude.

SingingLily · 13/12/2019 10:16

Morning, Autumn!

☕️☕️☕️☕️ all round and whatever you want from the breakfast tray.

It's a bright blue morning!

LouiseCollins28 · 13/12/2019 10:20

Brilliant post time4chocolate change achieved through votes.

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 10:21

Much more devastating result than I’d even thought and you know, there will be a lot of blame on Jeremy Corbyn but the reality is every single Labour MP who spent their time over the last two years trying to delay and frustrate and really bringing parliament into disrepute, they have to be hanging their heads in shame

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 10:21

That was Kate Hoey
