I'm not promising to be the resident landlady, and I can't even hope to moderate the discussion or offer up great memes etc because I don't know how, but here's opening the next iteration....

First drink is on the house.

And only for those saving for house deposits. Because "what else would you be saving for?

That comment was unbelievable. In one breath they will tell you people on benefits are demonised by Tories, yet when a Tory scheme to help people save is shared, its the wrong type of saving scheme.

I think its a good idea for everyone to have a savings cushion. If the Tories can help people put a little aside to deal with things like car breakdowns, new furniture, clothes, emergency travel, vets bills or taking the financial edge off Christmas and birthdays then I think its great. Not everything is about saving for a house. And it encourages people to get into good habits re saving and this type of scheme will help with that.

Try being a Leaver in Brussels, especially when other women comment that they couldn't believe the Leave vote, and wonder if those who voted Leave are really that thick. I grin back and ask 'like me, you mean?' and they rattle their coffee cups and walk away. These are women married to high powered men, or who are high powered in their own right, who are on the dip/military/defence/EU circuit.

It's especially interesting with the Canadians and the Yanks. They would absolutely refuse to be tied to the EU the way we are, yet advocate it for us. When you ask them if they would accept ECJ interference; have to have level playing fields for tax, trade etc, they look horrified. When you ask why should the UK have to then, they can't answer.

I did have a very enlightening conversation with the guy who managed the franchise of the small Carrefour where we lived. He wants Belexit, but recognises that Belgium would be screwed without the EU money (and NATOs for that matter) as we all buy locally, spend money on rents, hairdressers etc and generally help support the local economy. He thinks the EU is sclerotic, protectionist and for the elite only (the Vet thought that as well), and hopes that the UK makes a go of it to prove that there is life outside the project.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 14:42

“Anyone would think there was some sort of scary initiation test in the Arms grin”

Well, I’m open to it... 🤷🏻‍♀️😂✊🥃

howabout · 25/11/2019 14:42

Can do better than that Singing. There is a full blown rally every other weekend. In fact they all hotfooted it from George Square in YES tee-shirts and EU berets to parade about waving flags and obscuring my DD3's view of the fireworks a couple of weeks ago.

Some people are clearly in much more need of belonging to a "Movement" than average.

This is fascinating, I had never considered that angle... it’s great to have such specific insight!

Enb76 · 25/11/2019 14:49

'He thinks the EU is sclerotic, protectionist and for the elite only'

That's partly why I voted Leave, not for what it currently is but for what I saw it becoming.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 15:00

That's partly why I voted Leave, not for what it currently is but for what I saw it becoming.

Amen to this! All we get is “what are the benefits??” “what will I get out of it???” how is leaving going to improve my life???” “TELL ME NOW” etc... it’s not about that, it’s the direction it’s headed in, it has serious problems already, and the EU’s forward going plans don’t assuage me of those fears in any way. That was it for me, not ‘sunlit uplands’ ‘unicorns’ ‘little england’ etc..

It’s the slowly boiling Frog analogy for me, that if we don’t jump out of the warm pan now, when we have the chance, we risk not knowing we are boiled until it’s too late.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 15:05

Oh and not to mention the utter contempt shown toward our Country, by the EU, when Dave the twat tried to negotiate better terms, in a failed attempt to prevent this whole situation from Occurring.

scaryteacher · 25/11/2019 15:11

I don't like where it is going, and had dh wanted another three years out there, I would have stayed, but would have been getting increasingly nervous. Barroso said in 07 it had the dimensions of empire, and Verhofstadt confirmed this at the Lib Dem conference this year.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 15:29

Scary

The bad thing about Verhofstadt is that he comes over as the arrogant megalomaniac that he is. The good thing about Verhofstadt, is that he willingly bandies about the bonkers empire building schemes, wasteful disdain, and protectionist ideologies of the EU, so that everyone can see them on full display and in glorious technicolour. For that I am immensely grateful to him! Grin

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 15:30

He is certainly the EU’s useful idiot.

Enb76 · 25/11/2019 15:33

I don't really understand the SNP. I don't think their stance is very logical. They want independence but only from the UK, they don't want to be independent of the EU (even before Brexit).

And then, they've been watching the shitstorm that is Brexit with only 50ish years of history and think that them leaving the UK with 400 years of history will be better?

I've only started to recently follow politics again after 2 years of being an ostrich.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 15:41

“I don't really understand the SNP.”

Me either, I’ve discovered, trying to understand their position = ‘that way madness lies!’

That said, I’m not scottish, so I see it from an external POV. We do have some scottish posters here who can maybe shed some light on it though... anyone? Grin

howabout · 25/11/2019 15:51

Ebn you need another whisky till you see things the SNP way. Grin

Nippy is on with Andrew Neil tonight. Will know for sure if he's worth the effort if he manages to nail her on this.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 15:55

Loving that Tory voting contributers to the ‘tories thread’ on Aibu, are currently having their intelligence questioned in the WM threads...Hmm

GrinGrinGrin it never gets old does it? Same shit, different day. Wink

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 16:01

And in other cheery news, the BBC is showing a 90 minute election debate on Friday live from Cardiff featuring "seven leading representatives of the parties".

In a variation of the age-old "who would you invite around the dinner table and why" interview question, any thoughts on who the representatives should be?

Here's mine...

Conservative - Geoffrey Cox, for his barnstorming Shakespearean oratory.
Labour - Diane Abbott, for her clear-sighted and utterly unarguable logic. Baffling and therefore unarguable.
LibDem - Head Girl Jo, of course. No one else matters.
Greens - Jonathan Bartlett, if only to cheese off Caroline Lucas.
SNP - Ian Blackford, who can counter any argument with his battle cry "And what about Scotland?"
Plaid Cymru - anyone but Liz Savile Roberts. Seriously. Anyone.
Brexit Party - Anne Widdicombe. By way of light relief.

The saving grace is that it's being presented by Nick Robinson.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 16:03

singing, I can hardly wait! GrinGrinGrin

Enb76 · 25/11/2019 16:10

Does anyone watch these things and not end up being cross?

time4chocolate · 25/11/2019 16:37

Just wanted to say 👋 and Wine to all new punters and a special welcome back to the UK to ScaryWine.

I’ve been very absent in my postings recently as there is a bit of a DIY blitz going on at ‘Chez Chocolate’ but I’ve defo been lurking/reading and lol-ing along with you all. Hoping to be all done and dusted by 12th of neverDec for some well needed drinking in the ‘Arms’ (it’s going to be a long night!!).

scaryteacher · 25/11/2019 16:37

Cox upset one of my Mum's friends the other day by banging on her door canvassing at 1900. The lady is elderly and was alarmed.

Winterisnigh · 25/11/2019 17:05

scaryteacher

I'm so glad you found the '' arms'' I've always enjoyed your posts from the front line Grin

scaryteacher · 25/11/2019 17:23

I knew the Arms was here, but I was sorting the move back from Brussels, and seem to have been packing, sorting and moving since earlier this year.

One fellow wife at the other organisation in Brussels (not EU) for whom our husbands worked, stopped talking to me after she twigged I was a Leaver. She tried to avoid talking to me at a recent coffee morning, but I made a point of saying goodbye as it was my last one. It could be that her husband was my husband's boss, and they don't get on, but I suspect it was my political leanings, which was a shame as I didn't hold her being a remainer against her.

Doubletrouble99 · 25/11/2019 17:55

A double G & T for my landlady. In reply to the questions up thread about the SNP.
Originally the SNP were anti EU! The old SNP were true to their ideals of independence. It's only recently that this has changed. I think around 400,000 SNP voters voted leave!
One thing that really grates with me when I hear the likes of Ian Blackford in the HOC is his insistence that he is speaking for the 'people of Scotland'.
The fanatical SNP supporter is very similar in style to the momentum group in Labour. And the NS constantly states she would never prop up a government run by BJ. She always says this in a sneering way with her little scoffing laugh. The anti Tory/English/Elite/Privately Educated is extremely strong.
In the 2017 election there was a Conservative candidate in the Western Isles who was abused on Face book and in RL with chants of go back to where you came from and it being suggested they didn't want the likes of him in their country! He was probably more Scottish than they were. His family had farmed in the area for generations. The presumption was he was English because he didn't have a broad accent.
Nippy always says how welcoming Scotland are if immigrants but only if your not English of course and or privately educated.
It amazes me how so many SNP supporter think it perfectly OK to denigrate the English but would never think of themselves as bigoted.

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 18:09

GinGinfor Double.

RL stuff to do. The honesty box is under the till, where Xing left it. Back soon...
