I'm not promising to be the resident landlady, and I can't even hope to moderate the discussion or offer up great memes etc because I don't know how, but here's opening the next iteration....

First drink is on the house.

Morning all. Coffee for me and a bacon roll if there's any going.
I agree there could have been a wee bit more in the Manifesto. I haven't read it so not seen everything. I'd have liked to see some focus on mental health when it comes to increasing staff in the NHS. So much is dependant on the proper care of mentally ill people. Too much police time is taken up dealing with people in crisis, our prisons are full of people who shouldn't be there. Schools are not coping and a fair proportion of the homeless are mentally ill. Shame.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 11:47

It might be worth reading this thread back a little Jilly, so you can get a feel for where we are all at, and who we all are, just for the benefit of your own context really! Equally if you CBA (I would understand! 😂) then just grab a bar stool and get stuck right in!

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 11:55

Agreed Double, I think that’s a reasonable want/need tbh. It is more timid than I would have liked for sure, however, I wonder if it seems markedly more so in contrast to the Labour Trolley Dash? As Singing (I think) said earlier though, there is a 5 year timeline, so there maybe more headroom in Saj’s purse (😳😂) going forward. Here’s hoping they plan on under promising and over delivering. It’s a feint hope indeed, but I certainly would rather take that punt than the polar opposite. 😬

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 12:07

are you on landlady duties today singing

Looks like it! BrewBrewBrewand 🥓🍞 all round. Going to look at that other thread now.

More ☕️ in the pot if anyone wants it. BRB.

Hollycatberry · 25/11/2019 12:10

Labour Trolley Dash

Grin it does rather feel like this will be Labour over the next few weeks.

The Tory manifesto is pretty small and seems aligned to their Queens speech. I think its a safer route to go. Better than opening up tonnes of questions of how to fund and deliver x or y.

I agree with Double around mental health and I also think Tories need to address some of the cuts in the criminal justice area. Easy to give sound bites about locking up people for longer, but if you cannot bring the cases to court in a timely manner and give people a fair trial then there cannot be justice for anyone involved. This area is v much overlooked right now.

Hollycatberry · 25/11/2019 12:13

Just been reading the AIBU Tory thread as well. It's moving fast but good to see some robust debate.

Jillyhilly · 25/11/2019 12:31

Ah thanks Epic! I’ve had lunch so I’m going to grab a coffee and cake and have a meander the thread for a bit of a catch-up.

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 13:16

I'm in stitches with that other thread. Epic did some fine work on there.

Hollycatberry · 25/11/2019 13:40

Good work by both Lily and Epic on that thread.

You have to laugh really as it is all so predictable. I also love how any evidence given to back up a conservative leaning view is dismissed.
"I don't trust that paper or the source etc" is the response. Followed by lofty posts claiming "I've not seen one valid argument for brexit/tories" or "show me one policy that's good for ordinary people"

Can't help but roll my eyes as the reality is no source or argument is acceptable to these people.

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 13:41

I've just managed to give Dusty's excellent thread a bump on the AIBU Tories thread.

⚽️🥅

Hollycatberry · 25/11/2019 13:47

Great to include that @SingingLily

Of course it'll be challenged because a Tory policy to help lower earners save just cannot be right! It must be challenged and smeared as the wrong type of help because only the left wing can possibly help lower earners Confused

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 13:53

Glad you bumped Dusty’s thread in there, singing, I’m not sure enough people saw it. It’s really a great scheme that people may not be aware of, Although I see it’s already been discounted as “for the middle classes”. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤡😂

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 14:01

And only for those saving for house deposits. Because "what else would you be saving for?"

Priceless! Grin

Enb76 · 25/11/2019 14:05

I'm a lurker on these threads but just popping my head above the parapet to say thank you to those who put yourselves in front of the mud-slinging. I'm a reluctant leaver and a swing voter but this time around probably Tory for a whole host of reasons not just related to Brexit

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 14:07

Always happy to take one for the team Comrade Enb76!
😂✊

Welcome aboard! First drink is free! What do you fancy?

howabout · 25/11/2019 14:14

Singing that comment is unbelievable. Shock

My misgiving about encouraging people on UC to save for a rainy day is that a rent deposit and a month just in case plus an appliance replacement emergency fund is almost enough to tip them over the savings limit.

The penalties in the system are set up to encourage / force perpetual debt and arrears. It would be much better to address that than to give rewards for saving. However as long as the Govt is as stupid as it is if people are able to make use of the incentives they should and they should also be made aware of them.

Enb76 · 25/11/2019 14:17

I'd quite like a whiskey & ginger, thanks.

All of my RL friends are Lib Demmers, rabid remainers and absolutely anti-Tory, I have to be very politic. It's nice to read posts that don't make me feel like I must be shaking hands with the devil.

scaryteacher · 25/11/2019 14:19

Just popping in to say Hi. Am now back in the UK after 13 long years in the capital of the EU, and grumpy to see an EU flag flying from the NDNs flagpole, and Lib Dem placards to boot. Hopefully, their flag will lower in January (might have to raid their garden and cut it down otherwise).

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 14:25

A whisky and ginger 🥃 and a big welcome for Enb76. An equally warm welcome for Scaryteacher (also doing a fine job on the other thread re intelligence services and defence, i.e. the primary duty of any government) and whatever you are having.

I agree it's a fine balance, Howabout, but a rainy day fund just big enough to make emergencies like the car or boiler breaking down or the children outgrowing their shoes = a better night's sleep.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 14:28

🥃 and ginger for enb76! Yeah, it can be a bit shit out there in the real world, I was made to feel like the lowest of the low by some RL people, for voting leave, despite me giving sound and fully researched reasons for doing so. I actually detached myself from regular social media as a result and hang out here now instead!

howabout. Good point about the potential UC savings threshold breach, I would hope that the type of tax free account involved would exempt the saver from that trap, but I will do a little more digging to find out, @DustyDiamond do you know?

And welcome back to Blighty scary! A nice ‘cuppa cha’ for you! WinkBrew

howabout · 25/11/2019 14:29

Welcome home Scary Brew At least you don't have to cope with YES emblazoned Saltires all over the neighbourhood.

Enb I live in the land of SNP right think so can only offer you Whisky and water. [whisky] I am in such a minority that I just voice my views freely while my social circle humours me - they consider me a lost cause politically but are convinced I am in a minority of one and so not in need of persuasion.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 14:31

“At least you don't have to cope with YES emblazoned Saltires all over the neighbourhood.”

😱😱😱

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 14:35

Steady on. That's three whiskies lined up for Enb76 already.

Anyone would think there was some sort of scary initiation test in the Arms Grin

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 14:36

At least you don't have to cope with YES emblazoned Saltires all over the neighbourhood

And big photos of Wee Nippy grinning at you from every street corner...

Enb76 · 25/11/2019 14:39

I live in a very affluent but also fairly woke University town - not Brighton - so the virtue signalling is strong. I do a lot of the, 'I can see both sides of the argument' and then not get drawn in any further - I think that they all think I'm playing devil's advocate as that's generally always been my role.

It's been interesting to watch my mother's generation (born 1940's) recoil in horror at the idea of Corbyn possibly being anywhere near power - a fair few of them who would otherwise vote Lib Dem are considering Tory purely to keep Momentum out. My age group are all for Lib Dem and remainers but most people connected to the University are heavily remain because EU funding.
