I'm not promising to be the resident landlady, and I can't even hope to moderate the discussion or offer up great memes etc because I don't know how, but here's opening the next iteration....

First drink is on the house.

So apparently Boris is '' scaling the red wall '' of trad tory heartlands 😂.

Corybn says he's the man to bring the UK back together but maybe its bojo after all Confused

Winterisnigh · 23/11/2019 14:43

Blush labour heartlands

DustyDiamond · 23/11/2019 16:22

On a massive tangent, and completely unrelated to Brexit....

I've just found out about the Government run Help to Save thing for low earners on Tax Credit or Universal Credit.

If you know anyone that fits the eligibility criteria then please have a look at it & pass it on in case they too have never heard of it & may be interested.

Basically:

  • You can save up to £50 per month in the account
  • You don't have to pay in every month
  • You can withdraw money at any point
  • The account is active for 4 years, at which point it auto closes
  • You can close it at any point during the 4 years if you want

There are 2 bonus points (after 2 years, and after 4 years) at each of these two points you'll get a 50% tax free bonus of the max balance you had on the account over the previous 2 years
(small print is that the 2nd two year period bonus is only calculated on any extra amount compared with the first two year period)

So! If you save £10 per week for the full 4 years without withdrawing anything, you'll have:

  • saved £2,080
  • received a £520 tax free bonus at 2 yr point
  • received another £520 tax free bonus at 4 yr point

The bonuses do not affect your benefits & you can keep using the account if your benefits stop for any reason (eg start working & earning too much for benefits)

(Sorry for huge derail of thread, but I'd never heard of this & its def something I think should be known about more - think it was rolled out last year?)

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 23/11/2019 16:35

Great Rundown dusty! Looks a really good scheme, might be worth starting an Aibu thread about it too? Maybe some there will find it useful?

I certainly wasn’t aware of it! Smile

DustyDiamond · 23/11/2019 16:45

Don't think I can be arsed with AIBU Epic 😳

I might do later on as I've def never heard of it before & it's something that people should know about...

Just can't be doing with the inevitable shitty comments in AIBU Confused

SingingLily · 23/11/2019 16:49

A 50% tax free bonus is unheard of in the current savings climate. Defo worth its own thread, Dusty. Anything that helps eligible low earners to build up a cushion gets my vote.

SingingLily · 23/11/2019 16:50

Just can't be doing with the inevitable shitty comments in AIBU

Chat? Drop the link and scarper?

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 23/11/2019 16:50

“Just can't be doing with the inevitable shitty comments in AIBU confused”

I get you, so fair play! At least if you change your mind, you have plenty experience from the shitty bitch plopping that happens in here at times!

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 23/11/2019 16:53

DustyDiamond

Put it in money matters.
It’s not really an AIBU tbf, just good info for many.

DustyDiamond · 23/11/2019 17:02

I've done an AIBU one - will just ignore if shitty comments 😂

Will copy & paste it to Money Matters as well maybe...

SingingLily · 23/11/2019 18:04

Laughing at the "which Party introduced it?" comments, Dusty. It doesn't fit the Evil Tories narrative. Anyway, I'll post my comment about the bonus to give it a bump because as a thoroughly Evil Tory, I'm all in favour of low earners being given a hand to build up some peace of mind financially.

DustyDiamond · 23/11/2019 18:48

😂😂

Thanks for the bump Lily 😍
And Epic too!

✊🌹

DustyDiamond · 23/11/2019 18:57

There really should be something in place which triggers an auto email when you access any of the trigger benefits - with a downloadable attached document which lays out simply & straightforwardly (with links) all the different things you can apply for

It surely couldn't be that hard to do, surely?!

TheGirlFromStoryville · 23/11/2019 19:36

Just reading on the Grauniad that the Conservatives have a 19 point lead over Labour in their latest op poll.

Good news👏However, no time for complacency. Remember the fable of the tortoise and the hare? I think Labour will become increasingly desperate in their tactics / promises which makes me a tad nervous.

SingingLily · 23/11/2019 19:43

I think CCHQ are onto it, Girl. They're nervous about the mistakes made in the 2017 election campaign and I hear there's a careful strategy in place. Having said that, I'm nervous too.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 23/11/2019 19:45

I am wondering why Labour have left their windfall taxes out of their manifesto. Maybe they will be so massive they would even scare the bejesus out of Labour voters.

DustyDiamond · 23/11/2019 23:14

Saw this on Twitter & thought of this thread... 😂

Brexit Arms: the discussion continues....
SingingLily · 23/11/2019 23:37

Any port in a storm, Dusty! 😂🤣

SingingLily · 24/11/2019 08:52

Good morning all, the kettle's on. It's a builders brew for me.

I see the chap who rushed to defend Jezbollah's Corbyn-neutral stance on QT ("Actually, there is precedence for this. Harold Wilson etc etc) has now been unmasked as a - wait for it - communications officer for the Labour Party.

Well, knock me down with a feather. We'd spotted the Momentum plants from this thread. It was so obvious.

The BBC QT's vetting procedures all going swimmingly according to plan, as per usual.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 24/11/2019 10:41

Thanks for putting the kettle on Lily, I have a strong one in hand, after a much needed lie in!

Is he? Well personally I’m shocked.

BBC link which I hope works. Brilliant young man pointing out that doing stuff to improve your community doesn't need you behaving like a politician all day.

Our community gets everyone involved in community clean ups. DD3 and I even made it to the local paper - added bonus is she wouldn't dream of littering because she has helped clear up other peoples'.

Hollycatberry · 24/11/2019 10:57

Coffee for me thanks Lily.

It seems any of the audience panels for political shows end up with activists on them. I can imagine these activists look for opportunities to get on tv so they can support Labour / shame Tories as necessary but it results in everyone feeling pretty unhappy as normal folk aren't represented. You can tell these activists from a mile off, as they speak very articulate about Labour's manifesto, and always appeal to emotion ("tories are killing people type stuff"), so wouldn't surprise me if they get some training off Momentum. Problem for labour is that people can see through it now and they aren't influenced by what these activists say.

Polls are interesting. Labour's manifesto hasn't resulted in any swing towards them. What's the next move? Offer more (like WASPI payments) but then have to admit its not costed? I wonder if we are over peak Corbyn now. Brexit has hurt Labour the most (Leavers unhappy with 2nd ref, remainers not happy its not a straight revoke). Also anti-antisemitism hanging heavy over Labour. Hard to defend it when Jewish MPs leaving the party over the things they have been subjected to.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 24/11/2019 11:11

Ugh, I wish they would stop quoting Nick bloody Boles on the other thread.

It really gets on my nerves. Try living in his bloody constituency. He has turned out to be the worst MP of all time. Just ask his other constituents what they think of him.
I have much more to say about it, but I will leave it there, as I suspect it would get deleted. Hmm

SingingLily · 24/11/2019 11:32

Nick Boles. Hold on a minute till I finish laughing, Epic. I can read your thought bubble from here. Grin

Brewfor Hollycatberry, while I regain my composure.

The marvellous Mr Boles jumped before his constituency party pushed him. Ditto Dominic Grieve. Anna Soubry was fighting off moves in her CCP when she jumped ship to the Changey-Wotsits. The restructuring of the Conservative Party took place in effect under our noses and the same is happening for the Labour Party right now. That massive realignment is under way.

In the meantime, the Electoral Calculus poll of polls is today forecasting 357 seats for the Conservatives based on an average rating of 42.8%, Labour bumbling backwards to 30% and LibDems on 14.8%. Hope that holds.

On a side note, when doing some shopping for my sister over in Beaconsfield, some weedy little bloke I thought was a chugger approached me so I politely brushed him off. Things to do, food to buy, busy busy. Till DH pointed out it was Dominic Grieve touting for votes, so I went back for a little chat Grin. He's not my MP. Fortunately for him.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 24/11/2019 11:46

GrinGrinGrin

Bet that was fun for Grieve! GrinBrew
