Grayling announced this 2 years ago though - not a lot seems to have happened since then?

Grayling. No further explanation required.

I'm glad to find something we can agree on. Smile

ContinuityError · 15/11/2019 10:36

Sssshhh ... if you say his name three times you’ll summon him Smile

SingingLily · 15/11/2019 10:39

Now you've made me laugh out loud! That explains a lot....

Limer · 15/11/2019 10:43

Morning everyone, just popping in to catch up.

Free broadband, 4-day week - it'll be the moon on a stick with sprinkles on tomorrow. Still not getting any new voters though. And a few of the old ones are slowly backing away in horror.

Doubletrouble99 · 15/11/2019 10:53

Arse - what a crap response! I certainly do know that the Tory party is the Conservative and Unionist Party. I am a paid up Scottish member where the unionist part of the name is used all the time by Scottish Conservatives.

SingingLily · 15/11/2019 10:57

Still not getting any new voters though.

Morning, Limer. Peter Kellner now on Sky News saying that the polls are now indicating a Conservative majority although there's still plenty of time on the old clock.

YouGov was previously slated for being Labour-biased. In fairness, it took the criticism on the chin and revisited its methodology. I just hope it didn't over-correct.

😂 Dusty.

Your job didn't take you to Dudley North yesterday by any chance? Just asking Smile

twofingerstoEverything · 15/11/2019 12:41

He is literally planning a dictatorship.
Do you know what 'literally' means, walkingdead?

Working conditions seem to have deteriorated enormously since I went freelance/self employed and too many employers appear to feel it's okay to treat staff like battery hens.
Agree with XingMing here. I know people who work for a local utilities company call centre, who get hauled in front of their line manager if their loo break is 'too long' or 'too frequent'.

I can only imagine the posters on this thread who are frothing at the idea of a 4-day working week are not wage slaves like most of us!

I also think there's a strong health argument for a 4-day week. Physical work takes its toll over the years, but so does endless sitting at a desk. Anything that reduces long periods of physical inactivity must be good for us, surely?

ArseDarkly · 15/11/2019 13:57

Grin at that twitter xmas rhyme Dusty

Doubletrouble99 you're really going to need to develop a sense of humour if you want to survive this campaign!

Doubletrouble99 · 15/11/2019 14:08

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. Arse - I've been on these threads since pre June 16, and I'd say as a leaver you need a sense of humour on these threads! I notice you haven't defended JM's track record in finance.

ArseDarkly · 15/11/2019 14:19

Sorry, what does that have to do with my silly joke?

SingingLily · 15/11/2019 14:37

Sorry, what does that have to do with my silly joke?

Shock I never realised you were just joking too. I've been making the mistake of taking your posts seriously all along. My apologies.

Glad you cleared that up.

Who is frothing? Not many people are going to be against a shorter working week, but naturally people are going to question how this is delivered. People want to work shorter hours, which is fine if you're in a desk job with no customer or public facing responsibilities. But what about staffing in hospitals, schools, social services and the police? We also expect to be able to ring the bank 24/7, have parcels and shopping delivered late into the evenings and have shops open long hours over the weekends.
It's expensive for business or public services to cover more people to cover the hours of operation. So unless the shorter working week is delivered in tandem with a reduction in taxation like NICs, i think there is a big impact and Labour have not given information about how they will deal with this. Impact to Public Sector is covered in this report:

www.cps.org.uk/research/the-costs-of-a-four-day-week-to-the-public-sector/#

and from this BBC article:

His concern is that if some sectors cut their hours but others don't, we'll end up with a two-tier labour force; an elite of white-collar workers who get a four-day week, while others working more menial jobs continue with five days

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48125411

Hardly a proposal for the 'many' when you consider the above point.

ArseDarkly · 15/11/2019 15:01

I'd say as a leaver you need a sense of humour on these threads!

As a leaver you need a sense of humour full stop. It's going to be a hard and disappointing journey..

Limer · 15/11/2019 15:30

I'm all in favour of employees negotiating their own working hours/T&Cs with employers - it's always happened, and recently more and more people are working non-standard hours, which suits both them & their employer.

What I'm not in favour of is Comrade Corbyn making cloud-cuckoo land statements such as, "you will all work fewer hours for the same pay".

howabout · 15/11/2019 15:48

Completely agree with this. The policy doesn't sound thought through. Atm most desk jobs including those at the Council where I live have the option of flexible working and condensed hours. However the arrangements are subject to negotiation and parents and carers get preferential treatment. The proposals as publicised smack of creating a situation where the most flexible with fewest responsibilities benefit at the expense of currently protected groups.

I would assume as a starter 5 day schooling would drop to 4 days and entitlement to nursery hours for pre-schoolers would also diminish. Access to public services, including GP appointments, would also diminish.

howabout · 15/11/2019 15:58

I reckon Leavers are a bit like #ExcitableEdgar

Candles in the window lighting up a World of possibility Remainers just want to hurl buckets of cold water all over. Sad

Limer · 15/11/2019 16:17

Had to look up who Excitable Edgar was, but you're right howabout!

There are some Remainers whose visceral hatred of Leavers is bordering on an unhealthy obsession. All that pent-up anger won't be doing their blood pressure any good. After the referendum, I hoped for some acknowledgement of the result, maybe a bit of regret, but then a determination to unite and work together for the good of the country. How hopelessly naive of me!

Parker231 · 15/11/2019 16:30

Limer - leavers are no different about Remainers

XingMing · 15/11/2019 16:40

The Arms is a haven of tolerance and a bit of mocking by comparison to some threads. Have you seen the one currently in Active suggesting that to be a Tory is to be utterly despicable?

SingingLily · 15/11/2019 16:55

I've just had a look at that, Xing, and you're right.

Evil Tories/deluded Labour stereotyping in abundance. Such lazy thinking.

howabout · 15/11/2019 16:59

Never said ExcitableEdgar doesn't have his faults Parker Grin

I love sculpture so talking of looking things up does anyone know about the "I Am" sculpture HateIsNotGood referenced - google is being spectacularly unhelpful

VeryGenuinequestions · 15/11/2019 17:00

I'm not so sure it's lazy thinking or rather deeply ingrained brain washed thinking.

Evening everyone. Is any mulled wine on the go yet?

Limer · 15/11/2019 17:13

Parker "leavers are no different about Remainers"

How do you know? Earlier on this thread you said you didn't know any Leavers.
