Apparently the usual landlady over ordered on Bar nuts on the last thread. Just step over them if you find them here, as we haven’t had a chance to clear them up yet.

I think we’re heading towards another hung parliament - if Farage does flood seats with Brexit Party candidates, he’ll split Leave vote in Tory target seats just as LDs will split Remain vote to detriment of Lab.

Interesting times ......

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 18:47

Interesting look at how the Brexit vote is split from Britain Elects on Twitter (via YouGov, 17 - 28 Oct)
Obvs before no-Brexit day, and before Nige's willy waving so things may have changed.

2016 Remain voter Westminster voting intention:

LDEM: 34%
LAB: 33%
CON: 16%
GRN: 9%

2016 Leave voter Westminster voting intention:

CON: 58%
BREX: 24%
LAB: 10%

ContinuityError I was using the example of the reduced pension tax relief to demonstrate that even caring benevolent wealthy consultant doctors are refusing to work because they would have to pay to much tax.

Yes I know it was an Osborne tax change that has backfired but the Tories have realised that and are fixing it.

But despite the evidence that punitive tax rises on wealthy workers just means they dont bother working, Corbyn is still saying he will punish the rich and make the whole country poorer Venezuela.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/11/2019 18:48

Thank you Epicwaffle, you got their before me.

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 18:50

If nothing else, at least the misunderstanding gave forth the opportunity for the deployment of a sad face emoji

A rare thing on these normally jovial threads!

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/11/2019 18:52

Interesting use of the word 'flood'. I am pretty sure the Brexit party is only allowed 1 candidate per seat just like everyone else.

I think people read the 50% figure and that strikes them as being unfair

Just reducing the bands at which higher rate tax kicks in would probably have looked better

Having said that at least labour can promise that people under 80k wont have their tax rate touched

Which they wouldn’t be able to do if the tax bands were all lowered...iyswim

Norway, Sweden and Iceland have high concentrations of billionaires despite large welfare states and high taxes.

www.piie.com/research/piie-charts/which-places-have-highest-concentration-billionaires

Glad we're agreed it's a balance, because I don't fancy living in Singapore with its renty exploitative society any more than I fancy Venezuala atm.

The Tories are quietly renationalising dysfunctional railway services and prison services. They don't seem that keen on PFI either. I don't think it is wise for the Labour Party to be going down the politics of envy route but I also don't think defending the wealth hoarders is the appropriate response from the Tories.

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 19:06

One of the best things wrt tax that the Tories have done as far as I'm concerned is raising the personal tax allowance (think it's doubled since 2010?)

That's something that's helped low income earners massively and is often overlooked

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/11/2019 19:20

The richest 1% in the UK pay approx 28% of ALL income tax.
Nearly half of all adults don't pay ANY income tax.

If 1% of the UK's adults left, how much more tax would the 49% in the 'middles classes' have to pay?

Limer · 01/11/2019 19:46

I agree Dusty re the raising of the personal tax allowance. Although I think the idea was one of the Lib Dems' that got adopted when they came into coalition?

I'd favour a tax regime where people keep as much of their hard-earned income as possible, but pay tax when they buy stuff (so VAT, duties, luxury taxes, etc) Put the decision to pay tax under the individual's control.

It's weasel words with "tax" though - what about national insurance? That seems to be untouchable "because it's for our NHS" even though it all goes into the same Treasury coffers.

When did "the NHS" morph into "our NHS"? I've heard the latter far more frequently recently.

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 19:53

I'd be all for raising the tax allowance to the same level as a full time minimum wage job would pay, defo.

Then tinker around a bit with the other income tax levels & %s (am not that up on tax stuff as I've always been PAYE so never needed to understand it all)

Raising VAT has a negative impact on lower incomes though I think (but again, I'm not an expert)

There def needs to be a sensible balance though as the highest earners contribute such a massive % of revenue & it would be daft to scare them off.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 01/11/2019 20:17

raising VAT has a negative impact on lower incomes though I think

Yes you are right

Dh was ‘explaining’ this to Priti Patel but she said that people on low incomes are lazy and expect everything to be given to them

So that was nice Hmm

ContinuityError · 01/11/2019 20:31

Yes I know it was an Osborne tax change that has backfired but the Tories have realised that and are fixing it.

They aren’t though, are they? What happened to the November budget that was going to fix it?

Oh, cancelled, because Johnson wanted to push his crappy WAB through and then had a hissy fit because MPs pointed out it was a bag of nails and wouldn’t agree to it.

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 20:37

crappy WAB

I thought it was good 🤷🏻‍♀️

ContinuityError · 01/11/2019 20:44

I’m sure you do think it was good.

I don’t. For lots of reasons, including those that meant the HoC and HoL should have been given sufficient time to scrutinise it properly.

ContinuityError · 01/11/2019 20:52

Although if you’re hoping for a united Ireland within the next decade then Johnson’s deal would be pretty appealing.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/11/2019 20:52

What happened to the November budget that was going to fix it?

Um I think thats the topic of many threads, its called Brexit.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/11/2019 20:56

the HoC and HoL should have been given sufficient time to scrutinise it properly

Translation: the HoC and HoL should have been given sufficient time to shred the WAB until it was BRINO.

Bearbehind · 01/11/2019 21:15

Tax needs to be progressive, ie without cliff edges

Currently, if you have a company car and you exceed the higher rate tax threshold by £1, your car tax doubles (so probably about another £1,000 minimum in tax)

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 01/11/2019 21:32

Its the cliff edges which fuck you up

Effective tax rate of 62% when you go between 100k and 125k

Depending on how much you earn over universal credit limits you pay 70% + tax

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 01/11/2019 21:38

73%...

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/11/2019 21:47

No one, no matter how rich or poor should pay more than 50% tax on their earnings.

MichaelFabricantsHair · 01/11/2019 22:54

Long time, no see 😎
