Apparently the usual landlady over ordered on Bar nuts on the last thread. Just step over them if you find them here, as we haven’t had a chance to clear them up yet.

Welcome to all friendly parties!

Fully agree Dusty, I have a feeling it is a 4D chess move. Hardcore Brexiters will go BXP others who want to get Brexit done will go conservative. 🤞🤞

Epicwaffle · 01/11/2019 14:23

“But Farage is not remotely serious about a pact if his ultimatum is no deal only, so best strategy for BJ is to refuse.”

Agreed.

Farage and Trump have both given a lot of help to Corbyn this week.

We're in the phoney war period at the mo so no real damage being done yet....

Stuff at the beginning (unless a candidate literally murders someone) doesn't really have reach once the gloves come off when the manifestos come out

SingingLily · 01/11/2019 14:29

From what I've been reading, haven't the Brexit Party been heavily targeting the North and Midlands Labour Leave constituencies where Labour voters just can't bring themselves to vote for Jezza but equally, would rather die in a ditch than vote Tory? (Puts me in mind of Noel Gallagher who once said that his pen hovered over the Conservative box on the ballot paper but "there's an invisible force field that just won't let me do it").

Interestingly, the ConservativeHome website did a snap survey of its panel member just yesterday (all bona fide Conservative Party members including activists, MPs and MEPs) and slightly more than half said the Party should agree an electoral pact with BXP.

SingingLily · 01/11/2019 14:30

Oops, "panel members".

There's more than just one Smile

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 14:33

An electoral pact would have been my preference if Nige hadn't started bollock swinging.

If a pact involves going full no deal then BJ is right to say no imo.
I think that deal would scare off loads of moderates who could otherwise go Tory as a one off (and many Tories leavers too for that matter)

Epicwaffle · 01/11/2019 14:33

“People who normally vote Tory but were going to do a 'remain protest' vote for Lib Dem or Labour, or just not vote at all will likely be more scared of Jezsus sneaking in by accident than they are of Brexit.”

Fair point! Hadn’t considered it that way... probably why I’m shit at chess.Grin

Again, from what I've read, Nige is a one-man band and has never really learned to share. His Brexit Party candidates are an interesting bunch - drawn from right across the political spectrum but also fiercely independent of mind in their own right. There's no guarantee that an elected BXP MP would adhere to Nige's philosophy if it meant any kind of Brexit slipping away.

So many variables...

bellinisurge · 01/11/2019 15:07

I despise Corbyn and Johnson. But given how many Brexit supporters were (are) happy for No Deal, I fail to see how a Corbyn victory is worse for the country than No Deal.

I have lived and worked in a socialist country on rations during martial law before any of you start with a "you don't know what you are talking about ". It was shit in case you think I loved it.

MeganBacon · 01/11/2019 15:18

The yougov tracker indicates BXP gained votes from both Labour and Tories up to June, then lost votes back to Tories after that, but Labour stayed the same. Currently c. 15% say they would vote Brexit, but they can only do that if a candidate stands everywhere. If they don't, many of those will meander back to Labour, whereas the ones who decide between BXP and Tory have already meandered back to Tory. So it's possible that having BXP option everywhere will serve to keep Labour weak.
In any case, I am sure that these things are never what they seem and there are strategists strategising furiously in the background. 🍿

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 15:19

So many variables...

It's quite fun actually 😂

In a fascinating psycho-political study sort of way.

Will be biting my nails near the end though!!!

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 15:27

given how many Brexit supporters were (are) happy for No Deal, I fail to see how a Corbyn victory is worse for the country than No Deal.

That's actually my point re Nige's bollock swinging actually being counter productive for him.

People who are Brexit moderates will err towards the Tories, but also voters who would prefer a more orderly Brexit over no deal chaotic would as well, and in addition (more importantly in this case) tory remainers who fear Corbz & co more than a BJ WA Brexit.

Corbyn is so toxic that a sizeable chunk of centrist moderates from both sides of Brexit would prefer BJ Brexit over Corbyn.

The only people Nige will appeal to are anti-Tory-at-all-costs brexiters & no deal brexiters (no deal brexiters are mostly made up of former UKIPers so haven't impacted too much on GE results)

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 15:28

So it's possible that having BXP option everywhere will serve to keep Labour weak.

This too....!!

🍿 indeed!!

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 15:42

The ERG are being deployed today to soothe the brows of worried brexiters - heard Francois earlier saying that him & Steve Baker would not have supported the WAB if it wasn't actually Brexit.

A lot of Brexiters on twitter are of the opinion that 'if it is good enough for Steve, it's good enough for me. He knows what he's taking about'

MeganBacon · 01/11/2019 15:44

I fail to see how a Corbyn victory is worse for the country than No Deal

I think it probably is slightly worse, but more importantly, something I'm truly grateful for is the fact that a Corbyn government combined with no deal is not an option.

Limer · 01/11/2019 15:58

It's going to be fascinating to see how the GE pans out. Agree with PP that so many variables sums it up.

I know that Labour have alienated lots of their core voters where I live (working class area of the industrial West Midlands). Classic and pretty common situation of a solid Labour constituency that voted Leave. There's a lot of discontent with the local MP, who has spent the last 3 years failing to deliver what his constituents wanted.

I wish Nigel would just stop now! He's won, he's got Brexit - isn't that enough Grin

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 16:01

Look at the comments under this tweet by Richard Tice - lots of unhappy Brexiters...

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 16:02

I think Megan made a great point earlier about Brexit Party keeping Labour weak in traditionally anti-Tory areas.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/11/2019 16:04

Any one got an opinion on the latest Labour policy to ban billionaires from the UK?

Not quite sure how it would work but surly if someone starts a successful business, employing hundreds of people and earns more and more money at some point Labour would ban them from earning any more. So wouldn't the business owner either move abroad or shut the business? Millionaires aren't going to work for free, are they?

This seems like a crazy idea. Does anyone think this is anything other than the start of Corbyns Venezuela communism utopia?

Bearbehind · 01/11/2019 16:06

Has there ever been a GE with quite this many variables and quite so much at stake?

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 16:12

Not as far as I recall 🐻

DustyDiamond · 01/11/2019 16:13

Did you see the momentum woman on daily politics today arguing the case Walking?!

Proper crazytown

Oh yes.

"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money".

Hollycatberry · 01/11/2019 16:21

Labour Party policy = banning things. Ban billionaires, market enterprise, entrepreneurship, inheritance, private schools. The idea that some people think it’s a good thing is worrying. Next it’ll be the ban on owning private property or a car or maybe taking a flight.

Farage vs Corbz in the northern Labour heartlands will be a very interesting battle esp re Brexit. You’ve got Farage offering no deal and leave the EU as soon as poss vs Labours 2nd referendum on some kind of deal Or remaining. Not going to be an easy sell on the door step.
