It looks like a December General Election is on.

The EU have officially extended A50 until 31st January. We have to name an EU Commissioner though.

All that seems left to do is decide between the 9th and 12th December.

The difference between the two is about whether there is any possibility that the WAB can be passed before Parliament dissolves.

A pre-brexit GE is thought to favour the LDs at the expense of Labour and the Conservatives. What the Brexit Party decide to do and where they decide to stand will also be crucial.

Anybody who thinks the Tories will be wiped out next month or that the country regrets Brexit needs to get out more

This

In my day to day dealings there is massive support for the Tories and, at best apathy, but more often disgust, for Labour and not many marginal seats that can make a difference

chomalungma · 30/10/2019 18:27

Sensible move from Farage if he actually wants Brexit to happen

I hope that other parties look at that and reflect on what they do locally....

prettybird · 30/10/2019 18:28

41,822 votes cast/71% turnout basilpots Grin

13,743 for the SNP
13,741 for the LibDems
c10,000 for the Conservatives
c4,000 for Labour

Election in 2017 took place two weeks after the end of St Andrews Uni term (9,000 students - but about half from overseas) so not sure what impact that might have had. Their Martinmas term this year goes on to 20 December this year, so they should still be around Grin

Depends on who you deal with and who you talk to.....

Other people have very different perspectives.

The counters must have got through some coffee Pretty

I heard Richard Tice this morning saying that they had 627 MPs already allocated to fight seats for the Turquoise Party before I turned over Wink

So is it money or lack of feet on the ground that is influencing their strategy? Wink

Bearbehind · 30/10/2019 18:35

Other people have very different perspectives.

I don’t doubt that, but the point was the views of people on here are not representative of the country as a whole

The big question is what happens in the poll booth

Sadly many of us can’t actually make a difference anyway because of FPTP

borntobequiet · 30/10/2019 18:36

Talking to my apprentices today 1) They were very politically clued up 2) all detested BJ and Conservatives generally (Gove is “a knob”) 3) Most were registered to vote and intend to do so.

Ages 17 - 20. All boys. Encouraging.

prettybird · 30/10/2019 18:42

There were apparently three recounts Basilpots Shock before the result was announced at 6.30 am - and the LibDems were refused a request for a fourth recount (and took a week to decide not to mount a legal challenge) Shock

But it's a good illustration why it is always important to make the effort to vote (whoever it is you are voting for).

As far as I know their strategy is What Farage Says. Remember The Brexit Party doesn't have members. Only mugs subscribers who have no say in policy. Farage has learned from the mistakes of UKIP ...

If you poll Labour's policies individually you fill find 60-70% of the population support their reforms. Whether its higher taxes on the very rich or nationalisation the UK backs Corbynonimcs. If Labour get people to realise this, the election is their's for the taking

BBC News - Nigel Farage to be examined over £450,000 payment from Arron Banks

MockersthefeMANist · 30/10/2019 18:48

The Idiot BBC is routinely going out to town centre shopping centres during the working day and asking pensioners about their voting intentions.

Can they not see what is wrong with this.

Basilpots · 30/10/2019 18:50

Noticed BXP were offering Brexit Party ‘Club’ membership for £100 per month. Reserve seating at rallies and conferences, bespoke welcome gift, quarterly letter from chairman. That’s quite an investment.

Basilpots · 30/10/2019 18:51

Can they not see what is wrong with this.

No they just keep doing it.

MockersthefeMANist · 30/10/2019 18:52

Michelle O'Neill said this morning she reached out to Alliance and the SDLP to talk about some of them standing down so that remain parties would be heard better and win more seats

Interesting use of the word "seats" by the posturing abstentionists of SF.

To stop Brexit, you need to be there.

prettybird · 30/10/2019 18:55

I was going to add something along those lines DGR - that the franchisees prospective candidates are completely subject to the whim of the owner Farage Wink

So until the point that they have had to pay the deposit the Party has put forward an official candidate, they we won't know how many will actually stand Grin

I wonder how many they'll bother wasting their deposits standing in Scotland? Confused They got c 233,000 votes in the European Elections (c15%) across the whole of Scotland, so I can't imagine them winning any seats.

Basilpots · 30/10/2019 18:57

Our local news is quite subtle at times.

Gavin Williamson (education) rocked up at a lovely, leafy suburban junior school for his photo op. Gorgeous shiny happy faces all round. Next up inner city school who can’t fund enough teachers this year so close early on a Friday and have had part of their playground condemned. Frazzled head explaining why the small raise in funding they will get will be immediately swallowed up in an instant. No sign of Gavin here Hmm

I think it must depend on who’s in charge but our local news isn’t bad at showing both sides albeit subtly at times.

MockersthefeMANist · 30/10/2019 19:00

Why are politicians allowed into classrooms without a DBS check?

ClashCityRocker · 30/10/2019 19:01

Lots of people are allowed in classrooms without dbs checks.
I think as long as they're supervised, it's not needed.

I did some volunteering at a school and didn't need one, so I can't imagine a visitor would.

Basilpots · 30/10/2019 19:03

As I have a daughter as a teacher she would argue why are politicians allowed anywhere near the education system full stop.

TheMShip · 30/10/2019 19:06

This is the saddest thing I've read all week. What the fuck has happened to this country?

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/oct/30/food-banks-childrens-books-britain-hungry-election

prettybird · 30/10/2019 19:13

If the DBS scheme is anything like the Scottish PVG scheme, then as long as there is no unsupervised and/or regular contact, it is not required.

Basilpots · 30/10/2019 19:16

I know I read that Mship it’s somehow become ‘normal’.

Whenever I hear them banging on about record employment I want to shout just because you have a job doesn’t mean you can’t be poor.

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 30/10/2019 19:17

@TheMShip The Tories. That's what's happened to our country. It's heartbreaking.
