GE is on! Remainers how will you vote?

Just that really! The General Election is on, either 11th Dec or a few days before but it's going to happen now that Labour have agreed. Tactical voting websites are being prepared as we speak.

If you are a remainer, who will you vote for?

(And if any leavers lurk here, will you vote for Tories or Brexit party?)

Ugh. Did anyone else hear Radio 4 this morning? They were interviewing people in Kensington - a real marginal constituency. One woman said she didn't vote last time because she 'doesn't understand any of it'. She then went on to say that she would vote for Boris because he's a 'bad boy' and has 'energy... which is what we need now'. Never mind the fact that Boris isn't standing in her constituency... Never mind what kind of 'energy' he has... I never cease to be amazed at people's thinking (or lack of).

feistymumma · 31/10/2019 08:25

Labour, 100%

DippyAvocado · 31/10/2019 08:27

Why do so few posters take even 10 minutes to do some googling based on research and evidence before posting?

Presumably as she is talking about her actual lived experience.

"Lived experience" doesn't give you any clue about immigration as a whole. If you lived in my market town in the East, you'd assume there was virtually no immigration in the UK.

twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 08:28

Mellows Take a watch of this:

Warning - it might cause you to think in a 'bigger picture' way and take the piss out of some of your prejudices:

"...Bloody Neolithic people, coming over here with their pictograms. And their primitive wheat farming innovations. And their astrological stone circle temples with all the rocks aligned with the movements of the planets. WHAT'S WRONG WITH JUST WORSHIPPING A TREE?!?"

And wait until he gets to the bit about beaker people.

lonelyplanetmum · 31/10/2019 08:35

It's fine to say you feel there's been too much immigration if those are your feelings. It's not ok to say EU migrants brought economic detriment when it is proven that they brought a significant economic benefit.

Many people seen as 'migrants' in the U.K. are not - they are second generation or more. Many people are entitled to come here- because of the legacy of our former empire -nothing to do with EU membership.

1.what does what a Sinhalese born mayor said have to do with the EU?

  1. Non EU migration will increase due to our reliance on trade deals elsewhere. www.ft.com/content/56074dda-95bd-11e9-8cfb-30c211dcd229
  1. Migration watch is not a reliable source - it is a right-wing pressure group with a biased agenda. Look at a range of research sources including publicly available stuff from Oxford Uni and LSE etc
twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 08:47

And now we've got bloody cancer specialists coming out and saying the NHS is not safe in Tory hands... As if they would know...

GE is on! Remainers how will you vote?

The most shocking thing about a great deal of Tory voters is that they can see the damage their party causes, the misery for millions....yet they still vote for them. If I live to be a hundred, I will never understand it.

lonelyplanetmum · 31/10/2019 09:13

I'm alright Jack

That's why.

(I personally take the view that you vote for what's best for everyone -not just yourself but don't think that's the majority view.)

Trewser · 31/10/2019 09:17

That's not entirely true.

Moderate One Nation toryism was socially aware. Business, enterprise all valued.

I agree the current tory party is grim.

Bofster37 · 31/10/2019 09:24

@lonelyplanetmum Migration Watch is independent. And seeing as you recommend Oxford Uni as a source, how ironic that a Professor of Demography at Oxford University is a consultant at Migration Watch!

prettybird · 31/10/2019 09:25

I'm the same: I've regularly voted for a party knowing that it would put my taxes up (especially as a Higher rate tax payer) so that those who are less fortunate than me can be helped and so that universal services that I value (such as the NHS and state education) can be properly funded.

lonelyplanetmum · 31/10/2019 09:27

I agree the current tory party is grim.

Agreed. The trouble is people listen to what they say not what they DO.You only need to google this lots voting records.

It makes me laugh that the ERG persuaded the people they wanted to 'save' the 0.7% of GDP that went on EU membership! Ha ha. What they are really targeting ( using an insidious drip drip approach) is the over 60% of GDP that goes on free health, education, social security and elderly social care.

Those in control of the current Tory party believe in individualism ( like the US libertarians). They are not one nation Tories. This lot don't say it, but they believe it is not the role of the state to subsidise the things that we have learnt to expect.Make no mistake their target is to create a minimal welfare state and minimal corporate tax and regulation.

Except they vote for Tory policy that doesn't benefit them. It only benefits the super rich.

RickOShay · 31/10/2019 09:31

I will probably vote Lib Dem or Green.

RickOShay · 31/10/2019 09:32

I will never ever ever vote Tory.

lonelyplanetmum · 31/10/2019 09:38

Yes I agree Ken but it's the belief that you are in the JRM club and you'll benefit- except you won't!

You just need to look at people like:

Mark Francois, Johnson, Rees Mogg, Duncan Smith, John Redwood, James Cleverly. (Or Farage,Nuttal, and replacements.) Think they'll protect you?!

( On the migration watch thing - it is a funded right wing think tank www.opendemocracy.net/en/dark-money-investigations/whos-paying-for-these-reports-on-bbc-brexit-coverage/. Better to try a range of research sources.)

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 31/10/2019 09:57

Because we didn't listen to people who had these concerns = Nigel Farage.

Exactly. I always think a lot of this mess started when Gordon Brown was overheard saying 'she's just a bigoted woman' about someone voiced her concerns about immigration. Rather than listening to the concerns of their supporters, Labour just totally abandoned anyone who didnt fit the mould of their ideal voter. Totally forgetting that a lot of their core voters were not in fact middle class champagne socialists who are voting 'to help others'. But people who could well be affected by immigration in their areas if the right infrastructure is not put in place.

Nigel Farage enters stage left ready to pounce on that with misinformation and scapegoating.... And here we are.

motherofdoodles · 31/10/2019 10:17

Gina Millar has made a website for those wanting to see who best works for them. I found it interesting.

tactical.vote/

derxa · 31/10/2019 10:28

Gina Millar has made a website for those wanting to see who best works for them. Let's rephrase that. It describes itself as a site to keep the Tories out. I voted Remain but I loathe that woman.

Mellowsedge · 31/10/2019 10:29

Check the ONS stats. New born babies 30% have a foreign parent. 10% father's are Pakistan, 10% mothers are Polish.

New Labour created mass immigration. You might not see it but they are here in London. The immigrants say to me they wouldn't like it if it happened to their country.

By the way, most of my friends are immigrants from all over the world.

lonelyplanetmum it really sounds like you haven't read migrationwatch. So what if it's a right wing think tank. You say right wing but it's not. It's facts, non biased. It's the truth. It doesn't make things up.

placemats · 31/10/2019 10:35

So, this being a thread on how remainers will vote, I'm wondering how many of the posters actually voted remain.

twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 10:39

New born babies 30% have a foreign parent.
My child has one 'foreign parent'. What's your point, Mellowsedge?

Sakura7 · 31/10/2019 10:41

So what if it's a right wing think tank. You say right wing but it's not.

Which is it then? Confused

twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 10:46

You say right wing but it's not. It's facts, non biased. It's the truth.
Hmm
