GE is on! Remainers how will you vote?

Just that really! The General Election is on, either 11th Dec or a few days before but it's going to happen now that Labour have agreed. Tactical voting websites are being prepared as we speak.

If you are a remainer, who will you vote for?

(And if any leavers lurk here, will you vote for Tories or Brexit party?)

Tory

SciFiRules · 29/10/2019 23:14

I've never agreed with the blame placed on the Lib Dems for their part in coalition. They were a moderating force on a Tory Government, why blame them for what they couldn't prevent rather than thank them for what they did prevent?

Darkbendis · 29/10/2019 23:14

Duggeehug85, I think we are in the same constituency. I will vote for SNP too, and so will DH.

WarwickLife · 29/10/2019 23:15

Ah but @TulipsInAJug at least the result would only stand for 5 years, as opposed to Brexit which is for a lifetime.

WarwickLife · 29/10/2019 23:16

I agree @SciFiRules - they were in an impossible position PR-wise and certainly dampened many such policies.

Remainer; Libdem very likely. I usually vote Libdem anyway tbh and they don't win here because it's a solid labour seat. I do not understand what labour stand for on Brexit. I know other things matter too. But I will vote based mainly on Brexit.

WarwickLife · 29/10/2019 23:18

As long as you switching to Lib Dem doesn't open the door to the Tories in your constituency @MajesticWhine ?

Haha no way. My mp is Keir Starmer. But labour could put up a cocker spaniel round here and they would win a 30000 majority.

pigeononthegate · 29/10/2019 23:21

I will vote Labour.

Frazzled2207 · 29/10/2019 23:25

Probably Lib Dem as here is a tory/lib dem marginal and a good chance the brexiteer tory mp will get kicked out.

If it was PR,would vote either labour or green.

Cornishclio · 29/10/2019 23:29

I am a remainer and will vote Lib Dem. Hoping my sitting conservative mp loses her seat.

Iflyaway · 29/10/2019 23:30

The EU countries I know that have uni fees are a tiny fraction of the U.K. fees.

Well, exactly. But out of the EU you would no longer be eligible for that "tiny fraction"

It's about 3x as expensive for students outside the EU.

DS studied here so I know all about it.

Whateveryoudoordontdo · 29/10/2019 23:34

It's a General Election, not another Brexit referendum. How about looking at the parties' policies before deciding who to vote for? The NHS, public services, education, housing, climate change. Look at past record on the issues that really matter (other than Brexit) to you - austerity, tuition fees, whatever - and then choose who should be in charge of those policies for the next five years. That's a bit more responsible than "I don't like him or him or her", isn't it?

girlofthenorth · 29/10/2019 23:34

I work for the nhs so I'll be voting labour

Doubletrouble99 · 29/10/2019 23:40

I'm a Sottish leaver. Will vote Tory although wasn't a Boris fan at all have actually warmed to him.
Our constituency has, since the 60s been Lib.Dem until the 2015 election when it became SNP then in 2017 the Tory who had been the MSP got in with a good majority.
I think the SNP have miscalculated if they think they will remove all Tories as they forget 1m people voted leave in Scotland and sure won't be voting SNP any time soon. We also had a majority who voted remain in the union so I doubt these voters would change to SNP either.

OneMoreForExtra · 29/10/2019 23:46

Another remainer voting Lib Dem. They were the only mainstream party in Westminster brave enough to put country before party and oppose Brexit last year, before it all went to shit. They're the greenest of the big 3. And I agree with PP that in the coalition they moderated the Tories austerity drive and pushed them on environment and inclusion issues far further than they'd have gone alone. Labour and Tories have done much worse in the interests of gaining power.

TwigTheWonderKid · 29/10/2019 23:46

SciFiRules, oh, come on, the Lib Dems weren’t forced into the coalition, they voluntarily chose it, and as such were a reason every Tory cut that was passed was possible.

I think their current leader's votog record speaks for itself here If you can't be bothered to follow the link or read it all her record on Welfare and Benefits says a lot I think:

Almost always voted for reducing housing benefit for social tenants
Consistently voted against raising welfare benefits at least in line with prices
Consistently voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability
Consistently voted for making local councils responsible for helping those in financial need afford their council tax and reducing the amount spent on such support
Almost always voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits
Almost always voted against spending public money to create guaranteed jobs for young people who have spent a long time unemployed

Graphista · 29/10/2019 23:54

“Our constituency has, since the 60s been Lib.Dem until the 2015” er the Lib Dem’s didn’t even exist in the 60’s!

And I totally agree with twig that their voting record especially Swinsons is deeply worrying.

DippyAvocado · 30/10/2019 00:01

I live in a Tory safe seat so it won't matter which way I vote. I would choose whichever party was most likely to come second, but historically Labour and the Lib Dems have alternated for second, sadly a long way behind the Tories. UKIP/BXP do ok here, but I'm expecting some of those votes to go Tory this time so it will probably be an even bigger margin of victory. I'll still vote on principle but it's very frustrating to know it won't count for much.

tobee · 30/10/2019 00:06

Going to vote tactically as a staunch remainer. Not sure what that is yet. It's a funny constituency theses days.

Hoping for a non Tory majority at possible best scenario.

Driedlimes · 30/10/2019 00:40

V interesting thread.

Re women's rights - I agree with the criticism of the LibDem/green/ labour position on self identification.

However, surely women's rights encompass a whole raft of other important issues - in particular financial support for lone parents ( statistically women). Or employment rights ( eg no rowing back on maternity pay).

Parties of the centre/left have always done much better in these areas. So, perhaps, given the misogyny of the current Tory party, better to hold your nose & vote for one of the alternatives, rather than spoiling a vote?

Also, on Brexit - this an issue will determine the general political course of the UK for a generation. If in any way you want something other than a hard Brexit ( with the horrific economic & social consequences) please vote tactically. The labour position has finally been clarified & it involves a people's vote so that shouldn't put anyone off ( at its worst it was a soft Brexit anyway, palatable to most remainers). Personally, I'd happily vote for any of lib/Lab/green/SNP.

I really don't like Corbyn but this is a culture war & I'm clear which side I lean towards - it's open/liberal/wants a fairer society - Johnson & friends are the antithesis.
I'd also like a competent government which supports business & Johnson fails miserably on that score too.

VanyaHargreeves · 30/10/2019 01:03

Genuinely feel politically homeless and can't make up my mind

Could never vote Tory

Natural Labour Voter but very disappointed in Labour on numerous issues

Lib Dems are Wishy Washy and have never recovered from the coalition

Greens - I don't even know if they are running in this constituency

Trewser · 30/10/2019 01:31

given the misogyny of the current Tory party what misogyny?

Graphista · 30/10/2019 01:49

given the misogyny of the current Tory party what misogyny?

Oh come on! You can't be serious?!
