People's Vote March - Oct 19th

I thought we might appreciate a separate thread for organising meet ups and info :)

I am short of time at the moment, so support in gathering info and linking people together is very much appreciated.

It looks like Parliament (according to a Laura K tweet) will be having a special meeting on that day, even though it's a Saturday, so all the more reason to come along and let them know that we reject the situation and that we especially reject a No Deal Brexit.

Here is a more accurate number than the BBC.
fullfact.org/europe/peoples-vote-march-count/

ListeningQuietly · 15/10/2019 15:36

Bluesky
And that Fullfact was demolished at the time on multiple threads and all over the media because the counting method had LOTS of holes in it.

EG not counting people joining and leaving
assuming a much lower density than the photos showed
and ignoring the people not on the main route

The street sweepers said well over 1m, they know how much litter they clear up

twofingerstoEverything · 15/10/2019 16:14

You're right, listening.
I wrote to fullfact at the time asking how they could use the phrase “experts in crowd estimation” and follow through by citing a single ‘expert’ (Keith Stills) whose estimate is totally at odds with estimates from other sources. In my view, fullfact completely lost credibility with this claim. Their ‘crude estimate’ for the October 2018 march was higher at 450,000, which beggars belief. I was at both marches and there’s no doubt in my mind which was larger.

I don't know why fullfact don't just admit that they do not know/cannot tell, instead of trying to make out that the opinion of one ‘expert’ using a crude methodology is a ‘full fact’. This sort of claim would simply not be given any credence in any academic study.
They never responded to me, or to my two follow-up emails, so clearly don't like to have their 'facts' challenged. Since then, I've decided if they could come up with such utter tosh in this matter, much else on their website can safely be disregarded. This is a pity, because the concept of a website that is genuinely impartial is great. Unfortunately, fullfact use dubious methodologies and do not like any kind of scrutiny - not even from a non-expert like me.

Blueskyredsky · 15/10/2019 16:34

Would that be the same fullfact.org that is referred to when debunking the myths concerning the Lisbon Treaty? You don’t actually mean they gets facts wrong? Perish the thought.

ListeningQuietly · 15/10/2019 16:42

Most of the time Fullfact use multiple sources and verifiable documents.
In that instance their methodology was poor.
in 99/100 instances their methodology is good.

I do not rely on Fullfact to understand the Lisbon Treaty - it came into force in 2009 and is easy to read for oneself

Blueskyredsky · 15/10/2019 16:52

I don’t rely on full fact.org regarding the Lisbon Treaty either. I just remember it being frequently referenced on the Brexit threads when people had what were deemed incorrect understanding, so thought it just as good a source for facts on crowd estimation.

ListeningQuietly · 15/10/2019 16:58

Note the update at the bottom of this link admitting problems with Prof Still's methodology

Mum and I are still going but due to illness we have 2 spare tickets from Penrith leaving at 4.30am if anyone is interested.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/10/2019 18:03

when i hear that some people are getting up at ...early hours to get 4.30 am coaches, i feel more determined to be there than ever.
thanks for this inspiring thread as ever, op.

Inthenewsagain · 15/10/2019 18:06

Sorry if this has been done already, but which tube stations are best to head for if coming in from Euston?

Frazzled2207 · 15/10/2019 18:07

I am coming into euston and taking Victoria line to green park and joining from there

twofingerstoEverything · 15/10/2019 18:36

You could also go to Embankment, take a 3 minute walk to Trafalgar Square and join the march there if you've got kids/can't walk far etc

lonelyplanetmum · 15/10/2019 18:38

when I hear that some people are getting up at ...early hours to get 4.30 am coaches

Yes loads of awe and gratitude. Ours is a 30 min train journey- 5 of us coming this time.

I couldn't face coordinating the 28 friends and fam from last time as they didn't stick together!

borntobequiet · 15/10/2019 19:08

Street sweepers are reliable. But how often do they clear up after tidy marchers? I heard it said that after the last March the streets were cleaner than before it, because marchers tidied up as they went. I certainly did.
I still reckon 2 million last time. Hope it’s 3 million on Sat.

runningintothesunset · 15/10/2019 19:16

I went to one of the government’s get ready for Brexit sessions this week. I was particularly heartened by the numbers of people there encouraging others to march!

Inthenewsagain · 15/10/2019 20:57

Thanks for tube advice, which is the best if I'm alone and pretty nimble?

sovielverloren · 16/10/2019 05:55

Info for anyone coming by train from a southwesterly direction and wanting to join a group.

Members of the SW Surrey group will be catching the following trains and we are likely to be quite visible on the platforms.

Farnham: 9.28am (arrives Waterloo 10.27am)

Godalming: 9.25am (arrives Waterloo 10.13am)

Haslemere: 9.15am (arrives Waterloo 10.13am)

If you prefer to meet us in London, we will wait under the clock on the concourse in Waterloo Station from 10.15am to 10.45am. Note: there will be other groups meeting there too. If in doubt, ask.

We will then catch the Jubilee Line to Green Park Station, and we will exit on the north side of Piccadilly and take one of the side streets (e.g. Clarges Street or Half Moon Street). We will meet outside Caffé Nero on the corner of Curzon Street and Half Moon Street (W1J 7UP). (If we get split up on the Tube, make your own way there). We should get there by 11.15am and we will wait until 11.30am

Peregrina · 16/10/2019 07:07

Is Green Park station going to be open? Last time it was closed because of the pressure of traffic. Which gives the lie to those Brexiters who try to deny how many people were there.

When Farage and his mob manage to get the same numbers on the streets, I will believe that people want Brexit.

sovielverloren · 16/10/2019 07:23

Peregrina, that's a good point. I'm afraid I was copying and pasting and didn't think of that! I have always changed at Clapham for Victoria and then walked as don't fancy the tube, but am alone this time so was looking to join a group.

borntobequiet · 16/10/2019 08:37

Green Park was exit only last October and quite frankly I felt anxious waiting in the street outside due to the press of people - DD and I hopped back over the wall into Green Park to get away. I avoided it on subsequent marches.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2019 11:20

I like the Victoria approach - its not a long walk and it doesnt get congested in the same way some underground stations can. Are the loo refurbs finished yet?

OP posts:
countrygirl99 · 16/10/2019 16:13

I'm meeting my son and his girlfriend at Victoria coach station and we will walk from there.

raisinseverywhere · 16/10/2019 16:19

Toilet hint for Victoria - Market Food Hall opposite the station is good for food, and also decent toilets.

Do you think tube to St James Park station will be ok, then cut through the park up to the March?

Andonandonan · 16/10/2019 16:56

@raisinseverywhere we did that in March.

nothingwittyhere · 16/10/2019 17:07

In March the mobile phone signal failed, which I don't think happened last October? I could be misremembering.
Anyway, bear in mind you may not be able to use mobiles. I'll be up at 5 to get the train from Leeds - and hoping to find family coming from Paignton in the crowd near the Dorchester! I hope Parliament is sitting as I'm sick of MPs who ignore remainers.
