The Pro Rogues plan to prorogue again this week.

The Queen might be challenged to sack Johnson. Or he might be forced to extend.

It depends on which newspaper you read. Either way it strikes you that no one really knows what's going to happen...

Dusty01 I'm confused by it as well. I've been turning it over in my head, and all I can guess is that the government thinks no deal is a possibility, so they are going to refrain from committing to carrying over EU state aid rules for now, in case they need to put a lot of money into propping up industries hit hard by no deal. I don't think it means that no deal is a certainty though.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 14:42

Hester54 The European project was heavily pushed by the USA, when the Cold War started right after WW2

  • they wanted to avoid West European defence being weakened by any of the countries deciding to wage war against its neighbours.

In 1950, the European Coal & Steel federation was created - so 2 of the most essential things to build warplanes, tanks, munitions etc were integrated to make it very difficult for one member country to go its own way and build up stocks for war against its neighbours

The scope of integration expanded rapidly, with many upgrades & name-changes, to give us eventually the EU.

The story of the EU, from 1950 to a deep dive into Brexit - whimsical with #flags Wink

the Brexiteers seem to be really made up. Why?

Er because they don't trust those impartial experienced judges and incorrectly see it as a Johnson victory over the court. They don't believe in judges or in elected MPs making parliamentary decisions.

What they believe and trust in is Johnson. They choose to trust a proven adulterer and liar whose own sister says he is in hock to traders gearing up to short the pound.

TheMShip · 07/10/2019 14:45

Dusty I think these are the legal ways in which no deal could happen.

  1. An extension is requested as specified under the Benn Act, but the EU refuses.
  2. Same except EU offers an extension length which is different from the 3 months specified by Benn Act, and Parliament rejects this.
  3. Government resigns/loses VONC, no GNU can be formed, no extension requested.

I don't even want to think about what happens if no deal happens because of illegal actions.

TheMShip · 07/10/2019 14:47

What happens if the government requests an extension but for a different length than the Benn Act specifies? If it's shorter, I could see that as being frustrating the purpose of the statute, but what if it's longer?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 14:47

The govt themselves are very confused, so it's not surprising we are too sometimes !

Pity the poor bloody civil service who have to carry out these half-baked idea and will likely be blamed when it all goes pear-shaped.

Pity those poor bloody businesses who have to keep going despite their import / export processes being wrecked and with such inadequate information from govt departments about how to prepare
They'll be blamed for being lazy, insufficiently "dynamic & positive"

All thats going to only affect those pesky forriners, of course it wont affect you if you're white an english because they're exceptional, and have god given rights as englishmen to be treated with a certain respect? Or is that just how my Welsh brain is seeing it through a lens made of historical oppression? Who knows right?

It's also just dawned on me why Swinson is being as obstinate as she is, all these new MP's are likely to vanish from theure existing seats so will need to stand elswhereor theyre going to be back down to their 8 MP's was it?

Have at it Basil, I've come to look forward to those who can look deeper into the numbers giving us the benefit of their skills

QueenBlueberries · 07/10/2019 14:53

What would happen if Bj would resign on 31 Oct at 8 pm and there is no time to select a new PM and/or caretaker PM?

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 14:54

Mship I can't imagine 2) happening, unless the rebel Alliance falls apart

Even 1 month is better than nothing and the rebels wouldn't object to more than 3 months - probably prefer it

Peachi82 · 07/10/2019 14:54

Thanks for your answers.
I'll try and get my head around it.
It's so confusing.

(I'm still so angry about all this. I never understand why some(?) British people in the EU couldn't vote, EU citizen in the UK couldn't vote (me for example), but people from the Commonwealth living in the UK had a vote. I know of some students from India who voted Leave.
It is so frustrating and I get so stressed about all this. I worry about my family, my life here and everything :-( Its awful not having a voice.)

Basilpots · 07/10/2019 14:54

I’m on it Just Wink

Dusty01 · 07/10/2019 14:55

Thank you MShip.

It sounds like there is quite a possibility that we will end up with a No deal - but also that everything is going to get a lot lot more confusing and rocky.

I can't decide whether to stop reading and pretend none of this is happening or whether I should carry on trying to get my head round it.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 15:02

Queen There should be an extension in place at least a few days before that, in which case it shouldn't matter - just a GE.
Of course if BJ wins a majority, he can chose to No Deal and I doubt if the EU would require the UK to stay for the full extension - it would be renegotiated to an agreed earlier date if need be.

If for some reason the extension hasn't happened by about 24 October, then I'd expect the Rebel Alliance and the rest of the HoC to take action then, whether by approving the WA or replacing BJ

If it comes down to the wire, late on 31 October, then they are just playing chicken and the UK is likely to get run over

ElenadeClermont · 07/10/2019 15:08

Sorry I missed the debate whether Hungary would block the extension of A50. I doubt that they would for 2 reasons:

  1. As PPs suggested the UK/US governments could never offer the same level of continuous financial support as the EU.
  1. Hungarians traditionally support Ireland over the UK. Both are Catholic countries. Northern Ireland is often compared to Transylvania, and the whole objective of the alt right in Hungary is to "return" (not my words) Transylvania into the motherland.
Orban has given Hungarian citizenship to people in Transylvania with Hungarian roots.
Hester54 · 07/10/2019 15:20

BigChocFrenzy So as I suggested, peace in Europe not really anything to do with the modern EU,

TheMShip · 07/10/2019 15:22

BCF Mship I can't imagine 2) happening, unless the rebel Alliance falls apart

Yes I agree this is very unlikely, but it is a legal route to no deal.

tobee · 07/10/2019 15:26

Labour MP Stephen Hepburn (Jarrow) suspended amid sexual assault inquiry. Hmm

mrslaughan · 07/10/2019 15:26

Ed milliband gave a great speech ...I think in the lead up to the proroguing of parliament- in parliament.... Unfortunately the house was nearly empty ..... but I did think - wouldn't things be different if he was the leader of the opposition. I remember it surprised me as I had never really rated him .....

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/10/2019 15:38

I remember it surprised me as I had never really rated him .....

Seen people say the same about Kinnock, other than that lying bastard Blair who got into bed with Murdoch early on the Labour leaders get villified constantly and only after the villification end you think 'oh wait he wasnt that bad' and if Ed had been given more of a free reign and less policy advisors that disastrous Tory Lite manifesto would never have happened, allthough the abstention on the welfare bill didnt help him much with the core

BREAKDOWN

Following the suspension of Stephen Hepburn (IND, Jarrow) from the Labour Party, there has been a slight change of the composition of affiliations within the Chamber.

The Labour Party now have 243 MPs (excluding Deputy Speakers).

prettybird · 07/10/2019 16:02

There was a horrific, racially motivated abduction and murder in my part of Glasgow about 15 years ago. Some of the gang tried to flee to Pakistan but one of the only worthwhile achievements of our MP at the time (who, iirc, had been the first Muslim MP in Parliament) was to go to Pakistan and get them brought back and the gang was duly convicted of racially motivated murder and/or abduction.

The BNP tried to capitalise in the murder, coming into our ethnically mixed area and tried to foment hatred and division.

The murdered boy's mother was brilliant - telling them to get tae fuck as that wasn't what our community was about Smile

tobee · 07/10/2019 16:03

Feeling very pessimistic today. Speaking to a friend earlier who is abroad on 31st for work . She's been trying to find out what she'll need if we have crashed out; in terms of bringing work related goods back into the country. Customs don't know, freight operators don't know. Nothing is prepared. Nothing is known. Not even which customs channel she'll have to go through.

Hope Johnson and his cabinet of arseholes have really good fun dealing work the shit show of after No Deal. Angry
