The Pro Rogues plan to prorogue again this week.

The Queen might be challenged to sack Johnson. Or he might be forced to extend.

It depends on which newspaper you read. Either way it strikes you that no one really knows what's going to happen...

I felt proud that dd entrusted me to be her proxy. Smile

NoWordForFluffy · 08/10/2019 21:49

I was on holiday, but used my postal vote before I went. As did DH.

InMySpareTime · 08/10/2019 21:56

I was on holiday for the referendum, but got DH to do my proxy vote.

Hasenstein · 08/10/2019 22:01

DS1 was living in Japan at the time of the Referendum and arranged for me to do a proxy vote for him. Felt great to be voting (Remain) twice, although we still ended up with an overall Leave vote.

ContinuityError · 08/10/2019 22:04

People only having one address which they can register at is more tricky. Your DH should've arranged a proxy if he had plenty of notice that he would be away on election day.

DH only knew he would be away on polling day at short notice as usual, but that’s why we have postal votes. It should have arrived 14 days before the election, which was 7 days before travel date but it didn’t. We don’t have anyone here to ask to do a proxy vote if I’m away at the same time (not unusual).

And no point DS registering to vote where he is at uni - it’s pig with a rosette territory. His vote is better used at home. As long as his postal vote arrives in a reasonable time frame.

So I get your message, but it doesn’t work for everyone.

RedToothBrush · 08/10/2019 22:08

Yep.

We are here.

Why did we go through the courts and supreme Court and house of Lords just so parliament was resumed for 2 weeks? What a waste of time and money.

Also if BJ does ask for extension I assume the Eu can say no then that's his job done. He fulfilled the requirement of that bill?

Outsomnia · 08/10/2019 22:10

I think people are so sick of all this that they may just not vote if there is a GE. I reckon they might think nothing will change given what has gone on so far in this debacle.

My firm belief (even if it is wrong) is that there will NOT be a No Deal exit. I cannot put into words why that might be, but maybe the uncertainty has made some wealthy already, and the job is done now. I dunno.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/10/2019 22:11

Thanks Cherin I ordered something at the weekend from the EU, hope they bloody hurry up with posting it.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/10/2019 22:11

Your son should still register at uni, purely because he can.

And I've acknowledged that the system doesn't work for everybody, but it can catch most people if they know about it.

No system is going to be perfect for everybody. But voter apathy is the biggest issue (for voters within the U.K.; disenfranchisement is for overseas voters).

colouringinpro · 08/10/2019 22:14

I wondered if anyone was planning on going on the 19 Oct London March?

I've been on the last two and found them very positive experiences, but after those and the 6 million petition, I'm just sure there's any point again...

Outsomnia · 08/10/2019 22:14

For the Speaker Bercow fans out there.....

Why did we go through the courts and supreme Court and house of Lords just so parliament was resumed for 2 weeks?

To protect our democracy, constitution and the rule of law.

Do you seriously not think that was worth the cost?

Although, I’d be interested to know how much money was spent since you seem to have seen the accounts. I mean, you wouldn’t be basing your opinion of zero would you, I’m sure...

Hoooo · 08/10/2019 22:19

colouring I'd love to but just can't wslk far atm.

ContinuityError · 08/10/2019 22:20

Your son should still register at uni, purely because he can.

I get that. But what if he wants to vote at home because that is where his vote is more important? He shouldn’t be disenfranchised because his postal vote arrives too late to be returned.

I think this was also a major issue for eligible UK citizens in the EU during the referendum?

BigChocFrenzy · 08/10/2019 22:21

Indeed red
"Quo vadis ?"

Horehound · 08/10/2019 22:23

@gonnamythme

Oh give it a rest with the sarcy bullshit.
No I don't know but I'd get tens of thousands and no i dont think it was worth it! And I'm a remainer. Twat.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/10/2019 22:29

If he has a vote, he's not entirely disenfranchised, even if it's not where he'd prefer to vote. He still has the right to vote somewhere else.

And yes, I've already acknowledged that U.K. citizens abroad were ACTUALLY disenfranchised, as in had no vote at all. That was appalling.

Look, I was ONLY talking about students earlier. I was stating the FACTS for STUDENTS. You've now decided that somehow I'm to blame for the whole sorry saga.

I didn't design the system. I'm not responsible for the system. I'm not defending disenfranchisement. But for some reason you're having a go at me because of the system. All because I pointed out the FACTS about student voting (acknowledging all difficulties subsequently raised, saying it's not perfect).

prettybird · 08/10/2019 22:39

Why did we go through the courts and supreme Court and house of Lords just so parliament was resumed for 2 weeks?

Because otherwise the precedent would have been set that a government of any colour could shut down Parliament for any reason and for any length Shock: 5 weeks this time, why not a year next? Two years? Confused (which was the point Lady Hale iirc made in her questioning of the Government QC and he had no good answer).

So that now can't legally happen Smile although there again, this government doesn't seem to care about the law Hmm

And the good news is that in those two weeks, bills that would otherwise have fallen (and had fallen because of the unlawful prorogation) were able to get their second readings - like the Domestic Abuse Bill (I have y checked but I'm hoping that it got far enough that it doesn't fall again). And various SIs were progressed - required whatever happens with Brexit.

Hasenstein · 08/10/2019 22:40

Oh give it a rest with the sarcy bullshit

The sarcasm must have gone over my head. Of course it was worth it to protect the rule of law and restrain a rogue executive, now and in the future. And how much money has been wasted by this (particularly May's) government in pursuing legal cases with no prospect of success?

Or am I missing something here?

ContinuityError · 08/10/2019 22:41

NoWordForFluffy

Don’t be silly - at no point have I pointed a finger at you.

What I have pointed out it is that the system doesn’t always work if you want to vote in your home constituency and you are absent at the time - despite making suitable arrangements.

What if your student constituency doesn’t field a candidate for your party because it’s a different country?

Outsomnia · 08/10/2019 22:45

Just to mention, the Speaker Bercow will be a guest on ROI Late Late Show on Friday from Dublin.

It is a tame enough version of equivalents on TV in UK, but is very much enjoyed by ROI viewers.

I will get to see it on You Tube eventually, have no access right now.

Bercow is on the button anyway IMV so it should be interesting.

tobee · 08/10/2019 22:47

Remainers on here are arguing and, so not surprisingly, are remainers (or at least non no dealers) are arguing in parliament. Unfortunately, no dealers gain from the splits and indecision.

Horehound · 08/10/2019 22:50

To protect the rule of law. All thi stemming from that really legal referendum. Ho hum
