Westminstenders: Pro Rogues

The Pro Rogues plan to prorogue again this week.

The Queen might be challenged to sack Johnson. Or he might be forced to extend.

It depends on which newspaper you read. Either way it strikes you that no one really knows what's going to happen...

Thecat I too can remember that feeling of euphoria when Blair won in 1997 I literally skipped into work the next day, I was soo happy.
I worked for many years for a homeless charity & we were given access to so many resources & extra funding for new programmes/staff we made a real difference to many peoples lives & rough sleeper numbers were being vastly reduced once austerity took hold, savage funding cuts & most of those initiatives shut down & the results we see every day on the streets & deaths rate increasing at unheard of levels, so yes I’m with you on being depressed & off centre.

unwravellingagain · 07/10/2019 18:31

Have no idea about whether this is verified, but he's usually not far off the mark, and if true, it's just the first idea of the hell which could be unleashed.

++BREAKING++

Multiple reports that the UK govt is secretly making contingency preparations to slaughter almost all of Northern Ireland’s dairy cattle herd in the case of a no deal Brexit.

Violetparis · 07/10/2019 18:31

Does anyone have any idea how the Tory party will campaign on Brexit in an election (if there is one and their current proposal has been rejected). Will it be on no deal ?

TheMShip · 07/10/2019 18:35

cat no apology needed. I'm depressed too. The Brexit anxiety is bleeding into all parts of my life. I'm stress eating, irritable with the kids, and alternately unable to focus at work or workaholic.

prettybird · 07/10/2019 18:37

They won't campaign explicitly on "No Deal". Hmm

They'll campaign on "getting it done" and pretend that they are "simply" following the democratic will of the people. Confused

KISS - even though it's more complex than that - is Cummings' Modus Operandi. Angry

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 18:40

I read that BJ / Frost claim they haven't received a detailed point-by-point analysis from the EU of BJ's propos

HesterThrale · 07/10/2019 18:41

Yes dontcallmelen I clearly remember Dame Louise Casey (the ‘homelessness czar’? under Labour) talking very emotionally and bluntly in a R4 interview a couple of months ago. She was saying that homelessness is a solvable problem, they knew what to do about it, and that under Labour they got rough sleepers down to tiny numbers. Then after austerity all the initiatives and funding were stopped and of course rough sleeping escalated. She was memorably sincere, angry and critical of the government.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 18:42

unravelling I just found this:

Dairy Council NI warns of ‘certain doomsday scenario’ if there is no–deal Brexit

www.dairycouncil.co.uk/news-events/2019/10/dairy-council-ni-warns-of-lsquocertain-doomsday-scenariorsquo-if-there-is-nondashdeal-brexit

Violetparis · 07/10/2019 18:46

Thanks prettybird, if that is their campaign position in an election it will be pulled apart by the opposition parties (inc Farage) as they have failed to get Brexit done for over 3 years.

thecatfromjapan · 07/10/2019 18:49

unwravelling and MShip : 💐

As for the news about the dairy herds of N Ireland ... well, I guess Brexit will finally achieve the reunification of Ireland. But the road to that will be bloody. ☹️

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 18:49

"Boris Johnson claims EU has not explained in detail why it objects to his alternative backstop plan"

So BJ is lying again Hmm

See the EU's point by point rejection (link upthread) he received

I suspect the EU leaked it to the Guardian, because he was lying

dontcallmelen · 07/10/2019 18:50

Hester yes she was really committed & a lot of what she wanted to see was quickly filtered down to organisations like mine, we had some really good programmes which were borough wide & the drug/MH agencies local authorities etc all working together, as staff we had the time & resources that our clients needed, it’s so bloody unnecessary & cruel.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 18:55

Tom Brake MP@thomasbrake

@JamesDuddridge clearly hasn't seen the legal text he's answering questions about.

And has no idea why the lack of a UK EU data adequacy agreement will cause problems.

He has successfully mastered the degree of incompetence a Tory junior Minister requires to secure promotion.
😂

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

Not clear from this that even Brexit minister James Duddridge has seen full legal texts of govt Brexit proposals.
Refuses to confirm that he has done so.

thecatfromjapan · 07/10/2019 19:00

Sorry, I intended flowers for you, too, don'tcallmeelen. 💐

I actually read someone on Twitter - someone with a rose in their avi, ie. Labour - claiming New Labour started austerity.

I can't understand how anyone can be so high on purity politics that they will state that.

Apart from anything else, it means you can't begin to discuss the fact austerity was an ideological choice.

It is one of the main drivers of Brexit, & it needs to be laid , very firmly, at the feet of Cameron's 'fluffy', 'caring' Conservatives.

thecatfromjapan · 07/10/2019 19:02

I do like Tom Brake.

I spotted him outside the Supreme Court in the day the ruling was given.

He was giving an interview, so I didn't have a chance to squeeze him for information ask him how things are going in his view.

MockersthefeMANist · 07/10/2019 19:25

Sky are calling it like it is: BJ isn't getting a deal, and isn't getting away with No Deal. Nov 1st will dawn, we'll still be remaining.

(which is, maybe, precisely what the disembling fucker wants.)

thecatfromjapan · 07/10/2019 19:33

ThAt is very, very depressing, MShip.

I'm weighed down with impotent anger all over again now.

RedToothBrush · 07/10/2019 19:37

Can anyone tell me what happens if Johnson decides to break the law and leave without a deal in legal terms with regard to the EU?

As far as the EU are concerned if we say we are leaving and the deadline expires what are they actually supposed to do? They can't force us to stay and at the same time if we have legal challenges as to whether we have left lawfully there is a little bit of a problem too.

A50 states:
1. Any Member State may decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements.

However if we leave in a way which ISN'T in line with our own constitutional requirements, then technically this legally raises a few questions.

The deadline also raises this issue, because if we leave illegally then this can only be challenged AFTER the deadline.

Thus if Johnson does decide to go down the legal chaos route, its not something that can be rectified easily after the fact.

Everyone who keeps saying that we don't leave on the 31st October because of the legal effect of the Benn Act, assumes that Johnson won't go down the unconstitutional route.

The trouble is that it might be worth Johnson to take that gamble on the very basis, that once its done it can't be corrected.

Given he's tried it on with everything else, why couldn't he try it on with this?

Making plans to slaughter cattle is not just bluffing and thats the thing.

redavocado · 07/10/2019 19:39

Red, I actually read that as the decision must be made in line with constitutional requirements rather than the withdrawal. Surely that decision has already been made?

Motheroffourdragons · 07/10/2019 19:41

This reply has been withdrawn

This has been withdrawn by MNHQ on behalf of the poster.

Ellie56 · 07/10/2019 19:45

So basically the EU have told Johnson his fantastic idea to replace the backstop is a complete load of bollocks. Grin

(Just as we all knew.)

Was ever there such a twat in such high office?

dontcallmelen · 07/10/2019 19:49

Mship I think that article has finished me off today😢

MockersthefeMANist · 07/10/2019 19:52

All this talk of Surrender has reminded me of the events of Aug 14/15 1945 in Tokyo.

Having decided, what with the firestorm raids and a couple of Atom Bombs, that Japan must 'endure the unendurable,' Emporer Hirohito recoded a surrender speech to be broadcast at noon the following day.

Some die-in-a-ditch officers attempted to prevent this by staging a coup, occupying the palace and intercepting the recording before it reached the radio studios. They attacked the palace, overcame the guards, but soon got lost in the maze of corridors. They were able to round up some of the 'elite,' notably the Tokugawa, the Royal Chancellor, but despite threats of diembowellment, he refused to reveal the whereabouts of the recording.

By morning, loyal army units were arriving and the rebels were rounded up or self-eviscerated like good soldiers. The recording was broadcast on time and Japan duly surrendered.

...so it's all a question of who you think is who.

MockersthefeMANist · 07/10/2019 19:55

Was ever there such a twat in such high office?

In jolly old Blighty?

I think you may have to go back to a few silly kings and their unsuitable boyfriends. In the age of democratic politics, there's very little to compare: Douglas-Home, Bonar Law, the assorted nonentities of the 18th century. Not sure any of them hold a candle to BJ.
