Westminstenders: The Slow No

Have to make this quick.

Johnson has made an 'offer' to the EU. Let's stress this isn't a deal because they haven't agreed.

The EU have made kind noises about it but will say no thanks.

The UK are expecting this, and despite what's been said apparently are expecting more negotiation on this.

The DUP and the ERG seem to be on board with the proposal meaning in theory Johnson might have numbers to get through parliament. Except its not a deal so this is currently meaningless.

Parliament is prorogued again from next week with the Queen's Speech the following week.

I think Gove missed the fact that many Germans see the repartitioning of Ireland with a hard border as much more akin to the partition of Germany.
A machine gun in your face when you try to visit an elderly housebound relative on the other side is a stronger parallel than wanting to be able to reduce workers and environmental rights to undercut other economies.

BlueEyeshadow · 04/10/2019 08:07

Gove is now denying that he said it and has issued a transcript to prove it but Jolyon Maugham points out they have doctored such things in the past...

RedToothBrush · 04/10/2019 08:15

Alberto Nardelli is a journalist who was there and he has said what was going around on twitter last night didn't match what he saw. He says the transcript is closer to his recollection of what happened.

I am disappointed in Maugham for trying to create a conspiracy theory on this. It's unhelpful.

Boris was throwing NI under the bus and Arlene was driving it. Boris alternative is worse

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/10/2019 08:54

Re the Chalet School. I have them all and I agree, the ones around the war time were brilliant. I'm also born after 1970 Wink
There were lots of book series set in schools around that era. - there's a reason why people remember these ones above others.

Loved all the cats yesterday folks, although Yolo's cat in the in tray looks exactly like my cat who I miss greatly.

Peregrina · 04/10/2019 08:59

Still not understanding why anyone in their right mind is still thinking Brexit needs to happen. It doesn’t.

For Rees-Mogg and Co, it does because they makes lots and lots of money. Now whether they are in their right minds.......

Peregrina · 04/10/2019 09:01

'I wasn't there. I have no idea what was said. Reports differ. My point is that a Government that edits recordings after the event is not a Government that can sensibly ask to be trusted.'

The crowd shouting back reminded me of Ceausescu back in 1989. I wonder when the crowd will start shouting back in the UK and bring Johnson and Gove down?

It’s been a great privilege to serve Penrith and The Border for the last ten years, so it is with sadness that I am announcing that I will be standing down at the next election, and that I have also resigned from the Conservative Party.

Shock
JeSuisPoulet · 04/10/2019 09:06

Just seen this pop up on the Guardian flu vaccine to all primary children in UK which is odd as my doctor's surgery still don't have the vaccine and none of the medical professionals I know have had it yet either...tick-tock!

JeSuisPoulet · 04/10/2019 09:07

Oops, only in England, not UK wide Hmm

CrunchyCarrot · 04/10/2019 09:09

So sad to see Rory Stewart step down. Sad

QueenOfThorns · 04/10/2019 09:10

The flu vaccine for children is different, JeSuisPoulet, it’s a nasal one. My DD is having hers at school the week after next.

Peregrina · 04/10/2019 09:11

I'm sorry to see that about Rory Stewart - he's the sort of man the Tory party needed.

On the positive side, this is making a statement about what the Tory party has now become. I just wish that a lot more Tory members realised it - that they shared the values of Stewart, they don't share Johnson's values (party because he has few or none.)

DGRossetti · 04/10/2019 09:14

The crowd shouting back reminded me of Ceausescu back in 1989

Fans of "can't happen here" or "that could never happen now" (i.e. morons) might do well to research the subsequent short careers of the Ceaușescus

This happened in our lifetimes - something my history teacher would have told us should have been history ...

Two meals away from anarchy ?

So clarifying. Change U.K. was, apparently, about ‘stopping Brexit’. Presented with the chance of having a 2nd referendum they now explicitly prefer no deal.

They can not be voted out, and forgotten, quickly enough!

Independents like me will never put Corbyn into Number 10 regardless of the circumstances. This is a principle we will not breach, not even at a minute to midnight on 31 October. Other figures would command a stable majority by the way. (4/5)

BlackeyedGruesome · 04/10/2019 09:16

Seems the more moderate Tories are resigning.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 04/10/2019 09:19

I'm gutted about Rory Stewart. Sad

Yes I heard that interview. He was extremely clear on what would work!

I know it is the Sun but Johnson trying to buy off the Irish government shows just how clueless he is about Ireland.

MockersthefeMANist · 04/10/2019 09:26

Still not understanding why anyone in their right mind is still thinking Brexit needs to happen...

"Needs to happen" means make it go away, I don't want it bothering me any more.
